Looks really familiar. Definitely not Spencer. I think he looks more like Carl Warwick.

Jim McKnight 1960
The Cardinal above is Jim McKnight, whose brief major league career was spent with the Cubs.

Dick Bartell
A really sharp portrait of longtime major league shortstop Dick Bartell, taken in spring of 1939, his only season with the Chicago Cubs. Found in yet another Lexibell folder.
FYI, their training camp was on Santa Catalina Island. |

Three Generations of Pirates 3rd Sackers
A 1963 photo from the Lexibell folders brings together three generations of Pittsburgh Pirates third basemen.
From left to right are Hall of Famer Pie Traynor, who held down third from 1922-35 and earned induction in 1948; first year starter Bob Bailey, who held the job from 1963-67; and Bobby Byrne, age 79, who was the Pittsburgh third baseman from 1909-1913. Traynor was a spring training instructor at the time. |

1962 Bill MacLeod
Strong Lexibell folder shot of a Red Sox short-timer, pitcher Bill MacLeod. In the big leagues barely a year after he signed, MacLeod appeared in two September games (1.2 innings, 0-1 record) in 1962. Never to reach the majors again, he was waiting for the call in AAA until 1967.

Duane Pillette, Indians
I've come to understand that there are small but dedicated group of collectors who are drawn to photos such as this one like catnip.
A Lexibell folder unveils a shot from the Cleveland Indians' 1958 spring training camp where former MVP Al Rosen, a badly broken finger newly healed, shows off his grip to pitcher Duane Pillette. The back of the photo indicates that Pillette, whose final big league season would wind up being 1956, was with the Indians on a "look-see" basis. They did not like what they saw, as Pillette spent the '58 season split between the Reds and Cubs' AAA teams. He never pitched for the Indians, majors or minors. |

Grady Hatton: Player-Coach in 1960
Grady Hatton enjoyed an 11-year major league career, mostly with the Reds, between 1946-56. After two seasons as a player-manager for San Antonio, he was hired by the Cubs midway throgh the 1960 season as a player-coach.
Joining Charlie Grimm's staff, it was yet another 90-loss season for the Cubbies, and Grimm would be replaced by Lou Boudreau in one of the oddest moves ever by a major league club, Former Indians player-manager Boudreau came out of the Cubs' broadcast booth, and Grimm took his place behind the mike. Meanwhile, Hatton batted a brisk .342 with seven RBIs in 28 games for the Cubs, mostly as a pinch-hitter. He would move on to the still-forming Houston Colt 45s, managing in the majors and minors, serving as vice president and director of player personel. After managing the now-Astros from `66-68, he scouted and coached for the team through 1972. Photo from the Lexibell files. Last edited by rico43; 01-31-2016 at 11:51 PM. |

Pillette
There are a few problems with the supposed 1958 date on the Duane Pillette/Al Rosen photo. Firstly, Rosen's broken finger occurred in 1955, and thus had healed by spring training 1956. Secondly, Rosen retired after the 1956 season (though he attended most Cleveland camps thereafter as a batting instructor). Thirdly, Pillette joined the PCL Seattle Rainiers - a Reds affiliate - in midseason 1957 and remained with them into 1958, making his appearance in the 1958 Cleveland camp unlikely at best. We know he was a free agent in the spring trainings of 1956 and 1957 - we can't be sure he was in 1958.
The uniforms are no help - Cleveland wore those "insignia enclosed by a C" cap from 1951 through spring training of 1958. The safest bet is to identify the photo as 1956-58 with 1956 the likeliest because of the gesture about Rosen's finger. |

Wes Curry 1884 Missing Player/Umpire
The January 2016 SABR Pictorial History Committee newsletter features an analysis of a photo from Opening Day, April 29, 1886 between the Boston Beaneaters and New York Giants. Work by Tom Shieber and John Thorn has confirmed that missing umpire and player Wes Curry is featured in the photo.

9/27/1953: Duane Pilette Vs. Billy Pierce
Since people are speaking of Duane Pillette on this page;;;;;;;
Duane Pillette pitched the last game in St. Louis Browns' history. On Sept. 27, 1953 in St. Louis Pillette and the White Sox' star lefty Billy Pierce both had shutouts through nine innings. The game was decided in the top of the 12th on a two-run double by Minnie Minoso with each hurler going the distance. That was the end of the American League franchise in St.Louis as the team soon announced that they would move to become the Baltimore Orioles for the 1954 season. |

pitcher, Aaron Nola - Will the Phillies look good in red?
The Phillies announced that they will introduce a new, alternate all-red jersey this season. (seen here modeled by pitcher Aaron Nola).
It is scheduled to be worn only six times this season. With the exception of it's debut date of April 14, it will be worn on five "Getaway Dates", on the last games of homestands. There's a joke in there somewhere, that someone who is a more accomplished joke and story teller than myself could tap into. It has something to do with disgruntled, traditionalist, Phillies fans running the team out of town five times this season because they disapprove of their team's new, more flamboyant look. (Because they wear the new jerseys on getaway days - get it?) Oh, where's Conan O'Brien when you need him? |

Here's The Phillies Joke
...there are actually people who believe the alternate uniforms, throwback uniforms, camo uniforms, throwback uniforms, military appreciation day uniforms, Memorial Day caps, July 4th caps, Labor Day caps, Spring Training caps, Spring Training tops, Batting Practice tops, Batting Practice caps, All Star caps, and all the others worn by the Phillies and every other team, have any purpose other than to separate you from your wallet.
Please note a point that's come up several times recently here: at least as late as 1976 a big market team planning a complete overhaul of its cap and uniform design (White Sox) still wore the previous year's tattered regular season uniforms again in Spring Training. |
