Harry Cassady 1904
Cassady appeared in 12 games with Pittsburg in late 1904 and in 10 games with the Washington Nationals in early 1905. He continued in the minor leagues through 1912. |

Don Werner - Reds - UIN 1975
Well - finally!
No more cheating on the much sought after Don Werner, backup catcher for the Reds in the mid to late 70s....courtesy of Topps Vault. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post3948894 Last edited by hobbs11; 05-10-2016 at 03:27 PM. |

Steve Henderson
Not exactly the find that is Werner. Nonetheless, good clear color Steve Henderson Mets pictures have been hard to impossible to come by. The Vault also has shots of Steve with Seattle, today.

Enzo Hernandez 1971
Here's something I've never seen before. Long time Padre shortstop Enzo Hernandez in a 1978-style uniform, which he would never have worn in a major league game, having been released in March of that year. I'm not certain but I don't believe the Pads wore the new '78 unis in spring training that year, so these may actually be from 1979. No Hernandez/Dodgers sadly.
Today's Topps uploads: 826-827 Chris Ward; 828-831 Darrel Chaney; 832-835 Enzo Hernandez; 836-839 Steve Henderson; 840-843 Richie Hebner; 844-845 Woodie Held; 846-847 Duane Ward; 848-849 Ron Washington; 850-851 John Wathan; 852-853 Roger Weaver; 854-855 John Wathan; 856-857 Purnal Goldy; 858-861 Bob Hendley (Grab your wallets); 862-865 Clyde Wright; 866-869 Frank White; 870-871 Larry Whisenton; 872-875 Gary Wheelock; 876-877 Claude Westmoreland; 878-879 TBD (likely Matt West, '80s Atlanta prospect); 880-883 Don Werner; 884-885 TBD (this looks like Brad Wellman); 886-889 U.L. Washington; 890-893 Dave Collins; 894-895 Dave Goltz; 896-897 Luis Gomez; 898-899 Julian Gonzalez (1985 Angels spring training pitcher); 900-901 Bill Gogolewski; 902-905 Mike Wegener. Gary Wheelock 1976
OK, here's a whale, in both his unis...
I suspect the Mariner ones are from the 1978 camp (because his 1978 card, with a photo that has to have been taken in 1977, shows a mustache). |

Duane Ward 1986
As a baby-faced Braves prospect, dealt off for Doyle Alexander during his rookie year, allowing Atlanta to tire of Alexander quickly and deal him the following year to Detroit for somebody named Smelts or something.

Purnal Goldy 1962
Don't know if there's a stand-alone color image of this 80 Plate-Appearances Tigers outfielder. He's lost in the folds of history with all the other guys who hit three career homers, but two of them came in his 4th major league game, and he had already been a perpetual hyped prospect (think a kind of outfielding Todd Van Poppel). This is probably from his last camp with the Tigers, in 1965.

Bob Hendley 1961
All joking aside about insane bidding for the next four images of the man who one-hit the Dodgers the night Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game, this image deserves some explanation.
That's not a Met cap with the logo airbrushed off. You see this unexpectedly frequently in the Topps archives. For whatever reason, the Mets, Phillies, and a few other teams had their spring invitees and/or AAA players wear generic caps (I've seen a Denny Doyle this way, and a couple of Mets besides Hendley; the full shot of Jack DiLauro on his 1970 card is like this Hendley image). I believe all the Mets were taken in 1969. Curiously, the Dodgers did this in reverse. There's a bunch of 1969 images of Spokane players (Fred Norman, for instance - and the photo made it on to his 1970 card) wearing Spokane shirts and Dodger caps. Saw that his BBref photo was of him when he was (a much older) stuntman, so figured this might not have been posted here

Don Werner Reds
Don Werner was your basic third string catcher. It was his ill luck to be in the Reds chain in the 1970s, well buried behind Johnny Bench. Werner rode the yo-yo between Indianapolis and Cincinnati for five years, but whenever Bench got hurt somebody else (Vic Correll, Joe Nolan, etc) seemed to step in between Bench and Werner's opportunity to play. Werner did get a fair shot in 1978 and caught a no-hitter by Tom Seaver for his one moment of ML glory, but then it was back to the yo-yo. Werner got parts of two seasons with the Rangers after that and hung on for years in the minors, finally graduating to a successful career as a manager and catching instructor. To tell the truth, Werner was not a very good player. He didn't hit major league pitching, and he was vulnerable to the running game. For some odd reason good color photos of him with the Reds seem to be pretty scarce, the only one I have seen previously being the small image on his 1978 Topps rookie card. Now the Topps Vault has released two full-size color shots. I don't know for sure when they were taken but since one looks a little similar to the rookie card shot I will guess at 1977-78.

You didn't notice the same two images were posted on the top of this very page?
Also they uploaded four images of Werner, as indicated on the index also posted on this same page. Last edited by Merkle923; 05-10-2016 at 10:09 PM. |

Pirates Scrubs of the 80s Decline: Paul Moskau and Ken Reitz
For some perverse reason, the Pittsburgh Pirates of the nose candy era interest me. The '79 family club sprang numerous leaks in' 80-81 as the veterans got old and others got chemically dependent, so in 1982 Pete Peterson and Chuck Tanner strove to caulk the hull with marginals and fugitives from other organizations: Tom Griffin, Ross Baumgarten, Randy Niemann, Manny Sarmiento, Nelson Norman, Reggie Walton, etc. Here are two more seldom-seen scrubs from dr.jteeee, journeyman righty Paul Moskau and former Cardinals third baseman Ken Reitz. Moskau got one more cup with the Cubs in '83, but Reitz lasted only a few weeks with the '82 Pirates before his career ended for good. Unlike most images on the doctor's ebay site, these two images did not enlarge any further than you see them here.

Matt Broderick 1903
No, not that Matt Broderick. This is the guy who appeared in two games with the Brooklyn Superbas in May, 1903, including two innings at second base. He was 0-for-2 at the plate and had a putout as part of a double play in the field. His minor league playing career lasted through 1910, and he also managed at least two minor league teams. |

Doyle Alexander 1971
Speaking of Doyle Alexander, here is an image in a 1987 Braves uniform, which he wore after his re-signing in May that year until he was traded to Detroit in August for Smelts ... er, Smoltz.

Wee Willie Mills 1901
The major league career of Mills consisted of two pitching starts for the New York Giants in July, 1901. His contract was purchased by New York not long after he had put together a 13-game winning streak in the New York State League. He joined the Giants on a road trip and lost both starts, giving up a total of 21 hits and 15 runs, all earned. Mills was released after the second loss. |

Lave Cross 1887 (1900 uniform)
There are many pictures of Lafayette Napolean Cross in uniform with Louisville, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Cleveland, and Washington. During his 21-year major-league career, Cross played for nine teams, including the Brooklyn Superbas in 1900 after his contract was purchased from the St. Louis Perfectos in mid-May. He jumped to the Athletics of the American League prior to the 1901 season. This image is from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. |
