Harry Saferight 1979 (Sort of)
Twelve years in the minors (eight in AAA) and catcher Harry Saferight never got a day in the majors.
Well, that's not entirely true. He was recalled by the Pirates in 1979 (I believe I posted an image of him taking batting practice at Shea from September of that year) but never appeared in a game. He had made a Phillies' camp earlier in the '70s, and after his tantalizing weeks as a member of the Bill Sharman Society, went to camp with the Braves in 1980. Topps, of course, got him in all three unis. Last edited by Merkle923; 05-23-2016 at 08:46 PM. |

1983 Pirates: Dave Tomlin, debuts of Alfonso Pulido, Jim Winn, Joe Orsulak
The Pirates bounced back slightly from their post-79 decline in 1983 and finished a surprising second behind the Phillies. For some reason, some of the guys on the lower end of the Pittsburgh roster that year are hard to find--or at least I haven't found them. Then I checked ebay once more and found a 1984 yearbook with small black & white portrait photos of Alfonso Pulido, Joe Orsulak, and Jim Winn, all of whom made their ML debuts in '83. Until now the only photo of Pulido as a Pirate that I'd ever seen was the one on his 1985 Donruss card. I had never seen Orsulak with stoner-style long hair before either, but that's how he looked in 1983. The big prize is Dave Tomlin, who I think was previously unseen in a Bucs uniform. Also in the group are Bobby Bonilla, Mike Bielecki, Denny Gonzalez, Benny Di Stefano,Ray Krawczyk, Trench Davis, Sammy Khalifa, Ravelo Manzanillo, Andy Rincon, Jeff Little, Stan Cliburn, Steve Senteney, and Ruben Rodriguez, among others. Here they all are. Unfortunately I did not record the ebay seller.

Frank McManus 1899
McManus appeared as a catcher in seven games for the Washington Senators in 1899, two games with Brooklyn in 1903 (as he is pictured here), and one game with Detroit and four with the New York Highlanders in 1904. He batted 8-for-21 with Washington but 0-for-14 with his last three teams. His minor league career extended from 1895 through 1910. |

Lumpkin....
Any way you could limit your requests....on this last one, for instance you could have edited your previous post and just added that request to it....i love this MB but I think your requests could get a little out of hand and clog up this board.... If others disagree...I apologize....just my two cents |

Rico: please be a little more careful about redundant posts, especially if they include misidentifications.

Tillman was acquired by the Brewers in December of 1970 and released on Feb. 10, 1971, according to Baseball-Reference. So he was never in uniform in any organized capacity. |

1979 Rafael Santo Domingo
His major league career was limited to seven pinch-hitting appearances for the 1979 Reds (1-for-6 with a walk), Rafael Santo Domingo and his long, long name have made an appearance in the Vault. He spent seven seasons in the Reds' system, last playing in 1980. His post-playing career days found him serving, among other posts, as the hitting coach for the Everett Aqua Sox.

1890 Louisville Colonels
This cabinet is in desperate need of photo IDs, as it depicts the only championship team to ever come out of Kentucky.

Here is a picture of the same team, taken from David Nemec's great book "The Beer And Whisky League". Could help you to ID the players on your photo.

Jim "Rabbit" Miller, 1901
In his only major league season, James McCurdy Miller appeared in 18 games as a second baseman for the New York Giants in September, 1901. In 65 plate appearances, he had just eight singles, six walks, and a sacrifice hit. He continued playing in the minor leagues through 1910. |

K-Rod: 400 Saves
May 24: Francisco "K-Rod/Frankie" Rodriguez became just the sixth pitcher in MLB history to earn his 400th Save. He saved a game for Justin Verlander in Detroit's 3-1 victory over the Phillies.
Others in the 400 Saves Club are Mariano Rivera, Trevor Hoffman, Lee Smith, John Franco (leader in Saves among Lethanded pitchers) , and Billy Wagner. Are there Any photos out there of K-Rod throughout his career from a 20- year-old Angels rookie in 2002 through this year? |
