				Lowe Wren, Jr.

Take a look at the box score for this spring training game from 1956. It was the source for my finding a couple more NRI's. (Yankee hurler George Maier was the other). The White Sox have Aparicio, Fox, and Minoso in their lineup. The Yankees have Mantle, Berra and Billy Martin in theirs. The starting pitchers are Billy Pierce vs. Whitey Ford. At some point in the game, in comes Lowe Wren to pitch for the White Sox. And he strikes out two batters. Who is he? A guy with an abbreviated minor league career, who is better known as an NFL football player. His NFL career lasted from 1956 through 1960 as a defensive back, and then he spent one year in the AFL. His primary team was the Cleveland Browns. His athleticism was demonstrated at the University of Missouri before he turned pro. The photo comes from a Wikipedia entry on the man, where he is known as Junior Wren. Lowe Wren Register Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com Last edited by Cusick; 06-17-2016 at 11:25 AM. Dick Fitzgerald

Happy Birthday, Dick. Actually, it's a day late for these greetings, as he was born on June 16, 1935, but it's close. Dick Fitzgerald appeared as a pitcher in the Baltimore Orioles' spring camp in 1956 and 1957 as a non-roster invitee. What's unique about this player is that he has kept hurling in various baseball levels -- both professional and non-professional -- for almost seven decades. His history is well written in a SABR BioProject article. I'll reference it here, and not repeat it: Dick Fitzgerald | Society for American Baseball Research The photo is from that article and shows him in the uniform of the Vancouver Mounties. Ben Banks

Ben Banks was the brother of Ernie Banks. Ben was a second baseman who appeared in the Chicago Cubs' spring training camp as a prospect in 1956. At the time, he had signed a contract with the Cubs, and was expected to play for the Cubs' farm team in Lafayette, Louisiana, for the 1956 season. Baseball-reference.com does not show him with that team or any other minor league team. He did play for the 1953 Kansas City Monarchs Negro Leagues team and for the 1948 Amarillo Colts, a black barnstorming team, which was also Ernie's first professional team. Ernie once said that before Ben went into the military service (which I think lasted from 1953 to January 23, 1956), Ben was considered a better prospect than Ernie. The photo is from a website called scoopnest.com. Last edited by Cusick; 06-19-2016 at 05:35 PM. |

				Bill Werber, Jr.

Son of the famous major league infielder, this player made it as far as the 1956 Cincinnati Reds' spring camp as a non-roster invitee. He was a first baseman at Duke University, but played outfield as a pro ballplayer. He was born in February, 1931. Don't know the exact birthplace, but his parents were residents of Berwyn, MD, at the time. The photo comes from the Cincinnati Enquirer of March 30, 1997. That date needs an explanation. The newspaper was a 50th anniversary commemoration of Jackie Robinson's entry into the major leagues. This photo showed a group of Cinci outfielders in contention for jobs in the spring of 1956. Prominently featured in the middle of the group was Chuck Harmon, the first Afro-American to appear with the Reds. Billy Werber Register Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com |

Dovel was on the 1960 Geneva Redlegs. Also on that team were Martin Dihigo, Tony Perez, and Pete Rose. Surely, you need no help with those players. Another career minor leaguer on the team was Dan Neville. He was on a Topps card, so his image should be easily available by using Google images. http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...d=dovel-001lar Last edited by Cusick; 06-23-2016 at 09:46 AM.
