Steam version of OOTP17 exec suddenly doesnt work.

I've been playing my Steam-purchased OOTP17 game for well over two months. Suddenly, yesterday, I got this error when starting the game through my desktop icon:
"OOTP found that the crashed_on_startup flag is set. Obviously the game crahsed when you started it last time. OOTP will reset the graphics settings to default values. You can set them back later in the Game Preferences dialog."
Then the game automatically continued starting up. Then quit, with this message:
"ootp17.exe has stopped working"
Running Win 7 Home premiere, DELL XPS 8500 desktop. All my ATI Radeon video drivers...and audio drivers...are up to date. THe game has been updated automatically (via Steam) w/ latest update. All my other Steam games are working...and my OOTP game was running fine...until yesterday.
It's not a Norton-running-issue...I'm at a loss.
I do NOT want to uninstall and re-install the game. Too many things updates already, roster d-loads,pics,facegens etc.
Has this happened to anyone? Devs are slow to respond to OOTP on Steam so I'm posting here.
Thanks
Rob NYC

Can't address the crash-notice error. I've only seen that when using the conventional OOTP shortcut, i.e. non-Steam.

On occasion, though, with Steam I'll have to run the Steam program first, close it or select Play Game from withint the program, then start OOTP in order to get it running. Otherwise, I click on OOTP and nothing. Nothing.

So, two thoughts. 1) You sure you used the Steam shortcut and not your old one? and 2) Maybe try my fix-it and run the Steam program first, then OOTP. See if that clears things up.

Tried everything

Thanks for the responses....I have tried both accessing my OOTP17 from the Steam app first (games list, OOTp17, play)...then from the games' shortcut on my PC desktop. I've deleted that shortcut and, from the exe inside the actual game folder, created another shortcut. NOTHING works. My drivers are updated, all other steam games work and all other games work. It's a problem with the game itself.I do NOT want to go through uninstall/reinstall again bec of all the work I've done to this point. The game worked FINE until a couple of days ago.I even uninstalled my saves games (three seasons I was replaying) after backing them up. Still cant get to the game...crash to desktop and same message EVERY time.Do the DEVs ever respond here to issues like this?Steam has not responded to my issue, unfortunately.*****just checked on the Steam discussion board for OOTp17...apparently, other players w/ ATI Radeon cards are experiencing the SAME ISSUE,,,their exe file suddenly stopped working a couple of days ago...latest drivers, etc, do not help. AND it's most likely not a Steam issue, either. Has nothing to do whatsoever with AV running in background...it's a game problem with Radeon cards that DEVs I HOPE are fixing. A reply from the DEVs here would be ncie. I tried "filling out a ticket" on the OOTP site, but I get an error message there,as well! This is the first year I've purchased OOTP after playing APBA-BBW for decades. I hope it won't be the last, as I truly enjoy what OOTP has to offer.

Filled out a ticket for this issue yesterday morning. No response yet and yes I do have a Radeon card.

MODS or DEVs...please respond to this problem. I';m not the only one who suddenly can't play OOTP17 because of my ATI Radeon, apparently.

Certainly sorry you're suddenly having difficulties. The suddenly surprises me a bit, as you'd think if it were update/patch related, it'd have happened right away. But nonetheless, it's an issue and has been reported, will be reported, etc... through the channels and up the ladder.

I do know that we're at the tail end of a brief developer hiatus, but don't anticipate it will be much longer. So be patient- know how hard that can be -but until the garage has a mechanic, there's no one to work under the hood. Sorry, but hang in there.

Thanks for the reply, and I certainly hope the solution is quick. From what I can see, there are MANY people having issues...SUDDENLY...who are running ATI RADEON cards. Yes...suddenly.
Ironically: as mentioned, I played a competitor's PC baseball sim for years, and a friend suggested I try OOTP. Which I did, and in the almost two months I've been playing OOTP17, I've frankly fallen in love with this game. OK, the irony: my brother, another BB sim fanatic, is visiting for a barbeque tomorrow, and I told him I'd show him why OOTP is a blast.
And now...I don't think he's going to be very convinced.
I appreciate the humor in the "garage" reference, but a hiatus? I think perhaps it may be time to hire extra mechanics for the OOTP dev garage :-)

Yep, I'm having exactly the same problem. I noticed it this morning... I believe the last time I was able to successfully run and play the game was 7/5...

Radeon R9 380 here...

It's possible, though I have no way of knowing, it's related to a Steam app update as well or a combination. I know there was an update on the 6th I believe as I waited for the game to load. I have 'flickering' occasionally that requires a restart but it hasn't prevented me, fortunately, from playing the game. Regardless, the issue will soon be in front of those capable of sorting it out. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Glad I am not the only one. 18 hours ago my OOTP17 on Steam was working fine. Now exe runs and immediately hides in background - no start screen, no error message, nothing. Just to complicate matters - graphics is nvidia - GTX 970.

Not happy!

Endgame: Thanks again for the response. I don't know where the problem lies. I've put in a "ticket" with the OOTP dev team...and also waiting for a response from Steam. I'm not expecting a solution, but am hopeful for one. back to playing APBA BBW in the meantime.
Shame, as I am in a league and cannot continue my OOTP17 simming.
As I mentioned, my brother is here visiting and unfortunately, the problem I'm having had shied him away from purchasing OOTP. He also has an ATI Radeon on his PC and uses Steam.

But won't the problem just pop up again? Or did something happen THAT DAY with invidia drivers?

Hi guys,

I literally just bought the game in the Steam sale, went to boot it up and I'm having the exact same error. I'm getting a quick flash of the screen saying the game is loading then it boots to the desktop without an error message.

I get the same Crash on Startup message on restarting the game as the original poster.

Any ideas what causes this? I really wanted to play this and I fear I might have to go get a Steam refund as currently it's totally unplayable.

I'm currently on a Radeon R9 200 series graphics card with the latest drivers if that helps.

It's patently obvious now ...more than coincidence...that this error is resulting from it being a Steam purchase and users having a Radeon card of some sort. I haven't seen ONE of these people who has had this sudden issue (as of 7/5/16) who doesn't conform to BOTH of these factors (Steam purchase/Radeon card). I sincerely hope the DEVs work on this ASAP. Sadly, Steam does not allow you to direct queries to them regarding this...they bounce you automatically to the OOTP development site. So it's on the OOTP DEV team to work with Steam/Radeon to resolve this problem. Any potential buyers who were thinking of purchasing this game who happen to have Radeon cards will (rightfully so) avoid purchasing this game until it's fixed. Ironically, my brother was visiting yesterday for a BBQ. He, like me, has been an avid fan of APBA BBW for over 20 years,. Just this year, I figured I'd give OOTP a try for the first time, and was frankly loving the game. I was psyched last weekend to have him over to show him how great OOTP is. Then; THIS cropped up. My brother also has a Radeon card, and he said "no way, not buying until they fix this thing." Well, let's hope it's addressed. Restarting, re-installing,deleting local files...all the simple things OOTP is suggesting for this issue have no relevance. ONly sys restores seem to help. Some of us cannot for various reason take THIS option. OOTP: PLEASE work to resolve this.

Folks...I"m posting this as many places as I can...someone on one of the forums mentioned to uninstall a program called "PLAYSTV". I'm not sure what it does, didnt even know I HAD this program, but I uninstalled it...and the game now runs fine!
I think PLAYSTV MIGHT be an automatic thing that's installed with Windows updates (not sure), so be sure your windows doesnt install it again.

Just for some clarity here. Plays.tv is a program that comes with Radeon Graphics cards. It's a game DVR program. Basically it runs in the background and you can set it to record your game footage to upload to youtube or stream to something like twitch. It's 100% non-essential if you don't ever plan to use it. For whatever reason this program is what's screwing up OOTP. Uninstalling it solved my crashing problems.
