Infield / Outfield Range Rating

So, I have been playing OOTP since OOTP 15 and this is something I can not seem to get right. I love to throw the best defensive players out there as possible, sometimes sacrificing hitting just to get a guy in there that can play great defense. However, it always seems like I get a young guy to the big leagues and then once he plays full time, his infield or outfield range begins to decline big time. I had a 24 year old starting 2B who finished my year 2036 with an infield range of 61. I am now at the beginning of year 2038 and his range has dropped to 49. My centerfielder went from outfield range 86 to 77 in the same time frame. Both players are at 25 years old and 24 years old respectively. I always seem to have this problem. The young players' range declines and I end up having to move them to easier tasked positions, or having to trade them away. And then it seems not to happen to other players on other teams rosters. Is the range ratings drop just completely random, or is there something I should be doing to prevent this?

You're not doing anything wrong, and it's probably happening to other teams too. It doesn't always happen, not as badly as you're experiencing, but these ratings were dropping off a bit too quickly on average (so were Speed ratings). That's been reported and looked at, and with luck is fixed in the newest patch, can't guarantee that though.

Is there another thread where this phenomenon has been discussed in more depth that you can point us to? I'm interested in learning more about this before I convert my Modern league (young players, not using recalc, etc.) over to OOTP 17.

We talked about it in detail on beta, I wouldn't know if it's been discussed here at all. Speed definitely should sometimes fall off quickly for young players (look at Mike Trout or Manny Machado or a lot of other players, and you'll see SB totals dropping quickly at young ages), but OOTP was slightly too aggressive about it on average. It's not an issue I would consider serious enough that it would prevent me from converting a league.
