1978 Giants
I'm looking at the October 21 Sporting News (1978), where it says - "Five minor leaguers were added to the major league roster during the final week of the season...". The use of the term "major league roster" struck me; I was used to seeing "40-man roster" "active roster", etc., but not this. I'm not certain they would would have brought 5 guys up to the big league dugout during the final week only to not play any of them (they did play a bunch of other guys who came up at the beginning of the month). Elsewhere, for other teams, it noted that so-and-so was elevated to the 40 man roster and expected to arrive in camp in 1979, which is why this struck me as a bit different. It would make it easier for my purposes if they weren't actually with the big club - trying to create 5 additional cards is something I didn't anticipate, particularly when images may be very hard to come by.
I will yield to the cumulative wisdom of this group - what say you: does it sound like these guys actually suited up with Vida, Jack, Willie and the rest, or not? |

Archie Wilson 1951
Archie Wilson, 1952 Boston Red Sox. The image is sampled from a recently purchased photo.
I'm posting this because of the jersey Wilson is wearing... I can't seem to find another example of an early-50s Red Sox road jersey featuring the font seen here, nor can I find another example from the period of bi-colored lettering on a road uniform. The standard Boston road uniform of the time used a somewhat narrower dark blue block font. The piping along the outseam of the pants is also not standard. Boston acquired Wilson in a trade with the Senators in early June of '52, sent him to Louisville in early August, then sold him to Toronto after the season ended. It appears that he had no other affiliation with the Red Sox beyond those two months in 1952. The photo was made at Yankee Stadium, and Wilson and the Red Sox were in the Bronx for a series from June 30 through July 2. Can anybody fill me in on the uniform? Bob F. Sadowski 1960
Recently dug up and sold on eBay, the April 16, 1961 Philadelphia Inquirer two-page spread of head shots of the '61 Phillies. The creases come in an unfortunate spot for the only real "find" among the 25 images: four-year, four-team utility man Bob Sadowski in Philly garb.
My program doesn't respond well to fixing photos scanned from newspaper stock; maybe somebody else will have better luck - since this is the first Sadowski/Phils color image I've seen. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-03-2017 at 11:38 PM. |

Clarence Coleman 1961
The uncreased images hold up pretty well, and give us a rare color look at Choo Choo Coleman - who has passed away at the age of 80 - before he became infamous with the '62 Mets.

Well done! A MacBook is spectacular for idiot-proof color corrections and such but turns paper flaws into blobs and blotches.

Choo Choo Coleman (1937 - 2016)
Choo Choo Coleman, one of the original Mets and an All-Time baseball "character", passed away today (August 15, 2016). He was 78.
Choo Choo had so many legendary quotes. Like when Ralph Kiner asked him, on Kiner's Korner, "What's your wife's name? What's she like?" "Her name is Mrs. Coleman and she likes me, bub." My personal favorite was when, in Spring Training, Choo Choo had some difficulty learning the names of all his new teammates. Charlie Neal says to him, "I bet you don't know my name." Choo Choo says, "You number four." It's a sadder world, today. So long, Choo Choo. Rest in peace. |

This Phillies collector knows from experience that Bert Hodges photos are quite hard to find and what's available is usually not of very good quality. . It was quite a treat to find this very good one of the Phillies wartime infielder on the forum today. Thanks! |

Delano Hill
Nothing very spectacular in the Topps haul for today (nice Jack Hiatt/Angels if you're looking) so instead here's Delano Hill, 10 years in the Orioles system and the closest he got was the day Topps shot him at Spring Training in 1966.
Today's Topps uploads (KB): 777-778 Willie Tasby; 779-780 Norm Larker; 781-782 Kevin Hickey; 783-786 Jack Hiatt; 787-788 Mike Hershberger; 789-792 Ed Herrmann; 793-794 Ramon Hernandez; 795-796 John Herrnstein; 797-800 Marc Hill; 801-802 Glenallen Hill; 803-804 Delano Hill; 805-806 Tom Hilgendorf; 807-808 Dennis Higgins; 809-812 Jim Hicks; 813-816 Jim Hickman.
