I loved The Wonder Dog. Although I don't think I was ever aware that he was a first round pick...of the Yankees no less. From today's Vault, Here's Rex with the Orioles, for whom he appeared in 14 games in 1986 with just a single at bat (a pinch hit fly ball to center to end the 8th inning in a game against the A's on May 17th).

Ah, the joys of zinc salve when it was still widely used as sunscreen. We saw this before with a shot of Dodgers' minor leaguer Charlie Bohling. As a guy who used to ask players to pose I know how essential it is to have a reputation for getting it done quickly, but honestly, what is the photog thinking here? Or the player? "Just in case Topps produces a set this year not for Wheaties or Hostess but Coppertone"?

KB 889-890 seems to be Jeff Holly (Twins 1977-79) rather than Jim Hughes, and KB 891-892 Buddy Hollowell, Dodgers minors (1964-69)

I tried to write Bud Hollowell's life up in brief, but I felt I in no way was doing him justice. Here are the details, courtesy of BR Bullpen and Wikipedia: This man was deserving of at least his own card as much as anyone I've read about in the Vault project.

Bud Hollowell was a baseball catcher who is notable for multiple reasons. He won the 1963 College World Series Most Outstanding Player award while a junior at University of Southern California. He participated in the 1964 Olympics, was a minor league manager from 1970 to 1971 and was an author.

He is one of seven players from University of Southern California to win the College World Series Most Outstanding Player award. The others are: Bill Thom, Bill Seinsoth, Russ McQueen, George Milke, Rod Boxberger and Wes Rachels. After his athletic career, he obtained a Ph.D., master of arts and bachelor of science in physical education from the University of Southern California.

He taught for the University of Phoenix, where he was awarded Outstanding Professor of the Year three different times. He also served as the Area Chair of Philosophy & World Comparative Religions. Hollowell later served on the faculty of the American Military University where he taught undergraduate courses in management — sports medicine and sports & drugs. Other accomplishments include receiving Honorable Mention as an Outstanding Philosopher of the 20th Century, and winner of a Peace and Freedom Citation from the State of Alaska for assisting Chinese students and dissidents escaping persecution after the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. He is co-founder of One World Insight, a nonprofit community organization dedicated to conscious aging for the purpose of becoming whole, not old.

Hollowell authored two books, The Eternal Dance, which discusses religion and spirituality and,The Quantum Gateway: At the intersection of Religion and Science. He had the honor of the Dalai Lama reading excerpts from The Eternal Dance in a daily teaching at the Temple in Dharamsala, India. He died in Lakeland, Florida on May 16, 2014 due to prostate cancer.

Buddy was also a non-roster invitee with the Dodgers for five consecutive years: 1966-1970. I've only found one other player who was a NRI for that many years. That was Oscar Del Busto, and he was on two teams (Orioles and Reds) across that span. Five was also the maximum number of years I found for being on a spring roster without making the majors.

Woodcut located of John H. Schulze who caught one game for the 1891 St. Louis Brown Stockings. Schulze's woodcut is featured in the July 12, 1891 St. Louis Post Dispatch and includes a biography of his playing career.

The official 1970 Senators team photo is the same one pictured on the 1971 Topps card. It was also given away during the season on a pennant. It is ID'd on the back of the pennant, which is available on eBay.
