Vern Handrahan (1936 - 2016)
Vern Handrahan passed away Tuesday (November 2, 2016) at the age of 79. Signed by the Braves in 1959, the hurler saw action with the Kansas City A's in 1963 and 1966. His biggest claim to fame was becoming only the third major leaguer from Prince Edward Island (the other two players from P.E.I. played in the 1800s) and the first inductee into the P.E.I. Sports Hall of Fame. He pitched through 1970 and, later, worked as a scout for the Expos. The Vault provides some good images which have previously been posted here and here.

While I was looking for pictures of Vern Handrahan (even with good Vault images, I always check because you never know), I came across these Reggie Jackson images on the "Game Used" memorabilia site. You've probably seen them before, but I hadn't and they don't turn up on a site search. They're both from 1967. The first is a minor league image when Jackson was with the Birmingham A's. The second is a newspaper article from June 1967, after Jackson was called up. Though the latter is of little to no use because of its size and angle, there is a KC on his cap (that you can't quite see) and he's wearing #31. You know, for whatever its worth.

Only a few Vault releases ... and no Cubs
Before calling it a night -- and wondering if Chicago will burn like it did when Mrs. O'Leary's cow had her big night -- I thought I'd pass along Wedesday's offerings. Sorry, no Cubs.
396-397 Jeff Treadway; 398-399 Bill Travers; 400-401 Randy Trapp (NYM min.);402-405 Cesar Tovar; 406-407 Mike Torrez; 408-409 Mike Wallace; 410-411 Stan Wall; 412-413 Tom Walker; 414-415 Larry Walker. Plenty about Trapp on the minor league thread. Do like the nice Larry Walker image that closed out this batch. |

Missing Player Jack Fee 1889 Indianapolis Hoosiers
I located a photo of Jack Fee, who pitched for the 1889 Indianapolis Hoosiers.
He is pictured in the 1890 Olean team photo that is on the NYPL website. It was John McGraw's first team as well. Link is here: Olean baseball team, New York and Pennsylvania league; Baltimore baseball club, 1894 pennant winners. - NYPL Digital Collections A notice in the April 23, 1891 Pittsburgh Daily Post indicates that he played for Olean the previous year. |

Bob Tufts 1981
We've seen him before, but you can't have enough of Bob Tufts in Giants' gear. He's not only the only major leaguer from Princeton between 1962 (Dave Sisler) and 2004 (Chris Young) but later an adjunct business professor at NYU.
Thursday Topps uploads (KD) 416-417 Jim Tyrone; 418-419 Wayne Twitchell; 420-421 Jerry Turner; 422-423 Darrell Turner (P, Cubs system); 424-425 Mike Turgeon (INF, Giants system); 426-427 Mike Trujillo; 428-429 Bob Tufts; 430-431 Rich Troedson; 432-433 Alex Trevino; 434-435 Steve Trella (P, Tigers system) |

A photo of the 1889 Hoosiers was taken by Levytype Co. in Philadelphia, and is given a date of September, 1889, in the book Athletic Sports in America, England, and Australia, which was published later that year. The only September date that the Indianapolis team was in Philadelphia was September 14th, when they played a doubleheader, and Jack Fee made his major league debut in the second game. Only two other pitchers on the team (Rusie and Boyle) appeared in any other games on that entire road trip. It is likely that Fee is in the photo, and I believe that he may be the player in the middle of the back row. |

Eddie Carnett (1916 - 2016)
Baseball's Oldest Living former major leaguer, Eddie Carnett, passed away on Friday (November 4, 2016). He celebrated his 100th birthday just a few weeks ago and was featured here in a few posts upon that occasion. Eddie started his career as a pitcher, but was converted to the outfield, and he also played a bit at first base. In the majors, Eddie debuted as a pitcher with the Boston Braves in 1941. After being converted to position player, he was with the White Sox in 1944 and the Indians in 1945. He was then called up by Uncle Sam to serve in WWII. Upon his return, the Indians released him. He continued on in the minors for a few more years (mostly in the Cubs system) and then became a long-time player coach with the Borger Gassers, retiring in 1954. With Eddie's death, Bobby Doerr become the Oldest Living former major leaguer. Bobby is 98.
Eddie was originally signed by the Cubs. I'm not sure what team he rooted for, but I'm glad the Cubbies could win a Series while he was still around. The best images of Eddie are already up on the site--here, here, and here--so I'll just add in this image of Eddie from 2012, when he threw out the first pitch at a Mariners Turn Back The Clock game. |

Russell Miller 1927
This should provide a FacePack upgrade for Miller. It shows him in a St. Louis Cardinals' uniform. He was on the Cardinals' 1926 spring roster before he made his major league debut with the Phillies in 1927.
The photo is from the St. Louis Star and Times of Feb. 27, 1926. |

("Red" Hoff, the oldest ex-MLBer, ever, made it to 107.) Next up, Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr, the last survivor of baseball in the 1930s. Turned 98 in April. Hasn't been in great heath for a while, it's said. OTOH, did you see Eddie Robinson at the World Series? Looking pretty damn good for 95, I thought. |

Ruben Sierra Phantom
Uncle Maxie has a big batch of spectacular photos on eBay, and among them is this phantom of Ruben Sierra with the Cleveland Indians.
Sierra played for nine different teams in his 20-year career, but the Indians were not among them. He was cut by the Tribe on March 20, 1999, and had to sign with the Mexican League -- where he was plucked by the Rangers on May 1. |

Shelby Whitfield couldn't tell a foul pop from a 450 foot homer... he was a sorry radio presence for the Senators.

Bruce Taylor
For reasons that escape me, Topps snuck a handful of baseball images into the MB folder today. Here's the Tigers' Bruce Taylor sneaking in.

Darrell Sutherland
Topps also fattened the KD file a bit. Decent day for Mets, with new images of Mike Vail, Randy Tate and Darrell Sutherland. None of those folks have been absent from earlier Vault releases, but the Sutherland images have previously been smaller ones, so I'll take it.
