Tom Needham 1904

Last year Dto7 posted a picture of Needham circa 1905 from a newspaper source. This is the same picture, but a better clarity and a Carl Horner cabinet card to boot.

Hunkey Hines 1895

This one comes from an ebay auction that says it is of Hines. They were uncertain as to which team it features him with.

Dave Gallagher Cleveland Indians 1987

Quite a few weeks back a BW photo of Dave Gallagher with the Tribe appeared here. Not long afterwards I found a color snap of him online at dr.jteeee's store, but I have been deplorably slow in posting it. Anyway, heeeere's Dave.

Jay Baller Phillies 1981-1982

Jay Baller was one of the more obscure relief pitchers of the 80s and 90s. A Phillies draftee, Baller could certainly throw hard; in 1981-82 he averaged more than a strikeout an inning in A and AA ball. This made him a prospect, despite lousy ERAs, and a string of organizations kept hiring him in the hope that his control and earned run average would improve some day. Except for part of the 85 season with the Cubs that never really happened, and after his career ended in the early 90s Jay settled down in Reading, PA, home of the Phillies AA club where he had done some of his best minor league work. A few years ago the Reading cops stumbled on Jay sitting in his car in the worst neighborhood in town with a gun and a wad of cash in his lap. Jay was otherwise notable only for having the wooliest chest hair in the National League, as a glance at his 88 Topps card will show. Up to now the only image available of Jay with the Phillies was a '93 baseball card which showed him in the Phils new 1992 uniform style. Here he is from the 1982 Sporting News baseball guide, wearing the uniform he would have worn that year in his major league debut season.

Jim Kern Phillies 1984 Color

For several years in the late 70s Jim Kern was one of the best relievers in baseball. Then, as relievers tend do, he began to slip and slide, moving from the Rangers to the Reds to the White Sox. Something popped in his arm early in 1983, and the rest was just hanging on. A not very good BW photo of Kern with the 84 Phillies surfaced within the past year. Here is another not very good color shot of Kern with the Phils, unfortunately taken from the rear. At least it's in color.

Milwaukee Braves TV's

The post quoted above was part of a conversation a few months back that began after I noticed, and then posted here, two ebay auctions for Bob Hendley Milwaukee Braves TV's that ultimately sold for a combined 18 or 19 hundred dollars.

UPDATE: I've been noticing that TV auctions of Milwaukee Braves are going for hundreds of dollars each, no matter who the player is. A '62 Klimichock just sold for almost $300.00 -- and that's about the going rate for Milw. Braves. It turns out that two determined bidders, apparently with resources, are competing against each other in just about every Milw. Braves TV auction, driving the price of those TV's into the several hundreds.

If I were to guess, one of the bidders has to be Bud Selig. Even after all these years, he's still bound and determined to purchase the Milwaukee Braves and keep them from moving to Atlanta!

Underrated, Unheralded Jay Bell

Usually Unheralded Jay Bell (photo this page - section 29,503) made a couple of all-star teams as a second baseman and hit over .300 once and over .280 a few times.
He had over 1,950 hits, played in over 2,000 MLB games, hit 195 career home runs (clubbing 38 HRs in 1999), and he scored the winning run in Game Seven of the 2001 World Series to defeat the New York Yankees, stop their streak of world's titles at 3, and to give the Arizona Diamondbacks the 2001 world's title in just their 4th year of existence.

Missing Player J.B. Young 1892 St. Louis Brown Stockings

I've located a woodcut of J.B. Young who pitched briefly as a 40 year old for the 1892 St. Louis Brown Stockings. This one has been surprisingly elusive, since he resided in Mount Carmel, PA. his whole life and was a prominent citizen. Plus two Mt. Carmel newspapers are easily searchable on newspapers.com, yet despite hours and hours of searching the past few months, it was just a chance search today that found the image. The image appears in the June 24, 1895 Mount Carmel Daily Item.

Frank Carswell 1953

Frank Carswell, 1953 Detroit Tigers - he played in 16 games as a 33-year-old rookie, never got a start, and was returned to the minors despite reaching base 7 times in 18 plate appearances (.389 OBP). I don't think we have a decent image of this guy in a Tiger uniform, so here's a highly cleaned (just cleaned, not photoshopped) sample from a recently purchased photo.

Anyone who was curious about the Dan Boitano image on the previous page... I bought it, so here's what it looks like without the slant.

Now if only his teammate on that same squad - Jim Perry - would just rear its head....

Jim Perry / A's

One of the first images I looked for years ago in the Topps archives. NOT there. Maddeningly, the Topps Bay Area photographer was Doug McWilliams and shots of Perry with the A's are in his non-Topps collection which he donated to the HOF Library. Perry went to Oakland on May 20, 1975 and I suspect by the time he was released on August 23, Topps had told McWilliams to never mind, they wouldn't need any images.

Of course with the Byzantine Topps filing system, I could be entirely wrong and Perry/Oakland shots could have been sitting in a used Sbarro bag stuffed behind the filing cabinets and will turn up on eBay next week.

McWilliams Collection?

This question is for Merkle, are there any plans to digitize the McWilliams collection through the HOF photo collection site? The listings are in the ABNER catalog for his images. Just curious to know what is there and if it will ever become available to anyone interested in purchasing prints. On the excel list of player transparencies/negatives a Jim Perry OAK 1975 is listed.
