Padres claim *40* players on waivers, DFA them all unchallenged.
Pretty much what the headline says. New 1969 game started, albeit I manually reset some of the transactions that hadn't already happened yet. (The Ron Davis/Bobby Klaus to PIT for Cannizzaro/Sisk trade, for example.) The expansion Padres have a reasonable 35 players on their 40 man roster. And chaos follows…
3/1/69-Various teams waive various players, as you might expect. But the Padres, despite only having 6 open slots (they waived one of their own players), go completely crazy and claim no less than 40 players. 3/4/69-All the claims go through, the 40 newcomers are promptly DFA'ed. However…the MLB "Waiver Wire" tab shows exactly zero players currently on waivers, league-wide. In other words, the Pads are going to be able slip all their new acquisitions through, in perfect safety. No wonder they pigged out so much. A further check shows that while nobody is abusing this "free demotion for waiver claims" loophole as badly as the Padres are, it's a league-wide issue. The Pilots lost five players on waivers, grabbed five replacements, and DFAed the new guys…none of whom are showing up on the league waiver page. It's primarily the expansion teams (Expos used this for 10 players, Royals for 5), but not exclusively. What it is, most definitely, is a mess. Help? And thanks. (This actually the second time I've tried to run this game. On my first attempt, the Padres pulled this with a "mere" 24 waiver acquisitions. I shudder to think how many they might snag if I run the game a third time.) ETA: The relevant files have been FTP'd as "Padres Excessive Waivers.zip".
