Chuck Hiller 1961
Still not known in color, but here's a higher quality version of the one known black and white image of Hiller in his last major league uniform, in Pittsburgh in 1968. From a team-issued 8 x 10 on eBay: Original 1968 Pittsburgh Pirates 8 x 10 publicity photo Chuck Hiller | eBay

Have you ever seen a color image of Bob "Rocky" Johnson as a Met? Would love to locate one myself.

Fred Klages 1966
A couple of more Dexters tonight while I have a moment.
Here's Fred Klages, who made a dozen pretty good starts with the 1966-67 White Sox. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 01:09 AM. |

Wayne Redmond 1965
Got seven plate appearances in September cameos with the '65 and '69 Tigers, the first few after a stupendous outburst of 31 homers in 500 plate appearances in A and AA ball at age 19, and at 5'10" 160.

Ernie Fazio 1962
One of the most sought-after collegiate ballplayers of 1962, he got $110,000 out of the brand new Colt 45s. The majors were too much for the 5'7" infielder and he ended up with the '66 A's (and in camp in '67, in front of the Dexter photog, who didn't exactly focus).

Sal Bando 1966
He did a better job on Sal Bando, who would spend much of the '67 season in the minors and blossom after the A's left for the coast.

Tim Talton 1966
After 7-1/2 years in the minors (including a terrific 101 RBI season in the Texas League in 1963) Talton got the call and spent half of '66 and all of '67 as a backup catcher in Kansas City. He was also in camp for the Oakland A's in '68 and '69 and there are several shots of him with the "A" cap.

How about a young IF - Lorenzo Gray? I understand that by the time he arrived in the bigs in '82 that the ChiSox unis had switched. However he was in their organization dating back to the mid 70s....

Lorenzo Gray is who I immediately thought of...if you line up his rookie card from the 84 topps set (smaller photo) with the TV photo you did not show here his face is in the same angle...But, I don't think it is Gray
I could not find the 1981 White Sox Spring Training roster...perhaps, our answer lies there with a non roster invite |

The lighting and uniform clues look similar to other Topps White Sox photos that we know were taken in 1981 - but these do not totally exclude the chance the photo was taken later. It looks like Gray and is identified tentatively as him. Thanks.

Dan Gonzales 1979
Gonzales was the Tigers 2nd round pick in the January phase of the 1972 draft out of Fullerton College. He spent 7 years in the Tigers system before making the opening day roster in 1979. He made his first big league start on April 9th starting at DH and batting 8th in Kansas City (He went 0-3 with a K against Rich Gale)
He got his 1st big league hit in a start against the Blue Jays on April 20th when he doubled off of Mark Lemongello. He went 4-18 in 7 games in 1979 and made a brief return to the big leagues with 7 AB in late May of 1980 and he finished his career 5-25 with a pair of RBI. He began 1981 overseas (Hanshin) before finishing the season in the Texas organization. He spent 1982 and 1983 with the Rangers and Phillies organizations and finished his professional career with 1,020 minor league games played and a .280/.333/.398/731line in 3519 AB. |

Vinegar Bend Mizell 1952
Not impossible in Cardinal colors, but Topps lost its deal with him after the 1958 series. His appearance in the uploads is encouraging because it suggests the Vault folks may have tapped his folder, which I know for a fact includes images of him with the Pirates and Mets.
Today's Topps uploads (KF) 247-248 Eddie Fisher; 249-250 Gene Schmidt (Giants system, RHP); 251-252 Dan Gonzales; 253-254 Bud Zipfel; 255-256 Bob L. Miller (1957); 257-258 Paul Toth; 259-260 Mike Heaton (Angels system, RHP); 261-262 Wilmer "Vinegar Bend" Mizell; 263-264 Paul Toth; 265-266 Valmy Thomas. Randy Schwartz 1965
Dexter, by request...
Two-time All-America at UCLA and huge power numbers at A and AA - but not as much as one extra base hit in two trials with the '65 and '66 Athletics. When he slapped only seven homers in his first season in AAA in 1967, he walked away from the game at the age of 23. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 01:10 AM. |
