Didn't get any of the '67 Senator negatives you requested developed but I'll set them up on the light board in the next few days. Also, while Dexter shot a few coaches (Johnny Sain, Hal Naragon, George Myatt) some of which I've posted in the Coaches' thread, I have no evidence they shot Hodges or Jim Lemon or either the 1967 or 1968 Washington coaching staffs. In the interim, Dexter got something very rare: Ortega in the 1968 Senators red caps... Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 02:11 AM. |

				Jim O'Toole 1958

And here's Jim O'Toole in a clean copy of the shot Dexter used in the '67 White Sox set. This is one of only three color images of O'Toole with Chicago I've seen (there's one on his '67 Topps card, and also a nice Brace). O'Toole had a decent season in Chicago's rotation but hurt his shoulder, went on the disabled list in late July, and never returned. He was in camp with the Sox in '68 but was dropped and signed by Seattle's last entry in the PCL. That resulted in an invitation to the Pilots' camp (and a set of images of him in a Seattle uniform) in 1969, but he never again pitched in the majors. Rod Allen in camp with White Sox

I didn't know there was more evidence needed since I am 100% sure it's Rod Allen and the comparison photo seemed spot on. When I first saw the pic in the Vault images, I said to myself "I see ya, Rod Allen." (Anyone who watches Rod as a Tigers analyst will be familiar with that reference.) Anyway, here is a screenshot of the infielders and outfielders from a White Sox 40-man roster from the spring of 1981. It was published in the Sporting News in the March 28, 1981 edition on page 21. Rod is listed, but Lorenzo Gray is not (although Lorenzo could have been a non-roster invitee). Also the link to an archived UPI story references Rod Allen in camp for the Sox as spring training started in 1981. The Chicago White Sox open their exhibition season today... - UPI Archives |

				Rod Allen

Here's another comparison. The photo on the right shows Rod Allen with the Rochester Red Wings. The "dent" in his lower left ear lobe is really distinctive. I think you've nailed it, markmayes.

The TV photo does show Todd. It is from spring training 1972, two years before his major league debut and at least a year before growing his mustache. He was in camp wearing #39, the number he also wore during his first stint with the Cubs. Topps also got him in 1971, wearing #53.

Dexter got him in both springs, 1967 and 1968. These are snapshots off a light board, with a little color adjustment. Best I can do without spending money ;-) Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 02:11 AM. |

How could you hit .184 and slug .297 over a full season and still end up with a 1.7 WAR? French pulled it off in 1969. The two components? He walked 41 times in 202 plate appearances (thats a .348 on base percentage) and piled up a defensive WAR of 1.2. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 02:11 AM. |

By request. Boy did the Yankees think he was the light at the end of the tunnel when he came up in '66 (unfortunately 7 of his career 24 HR and 15 of his career 85 RBI came during his 31-game finish in that first season).

The great Maury Wills - along with Aparicio they revolutionized MLB's base-stealing game

It seems like the Hall Of Fame has done a great disservice to the HOF candidates like Maury Wills that were in the former Golden Era time period when they re-organized the eras. What they now call Golden Days era (1950-1969) is virtually identical to the Golden Years era of 1947 to 1972. That group had been up for election in December 2017 under the old system, but now under the reorganization they don't come up for election until December 2020, six years since their last election. Maury Wills, among the oldest of the living candidates at the December 2014 election is due to be 88 when that next election comes around. Every other candidate (now in their 70s - Kaat, Oliva, Tiant etc.) will be in their 80s by the time of the next election (If still alive). The only exception will be Richie 'Dick' Allen who was born in 1942 and is due to turn 78 in 2020. No other group has been delayed and hurt as much by the HOFs era reorganization. Two candidates who were alive at the time of the December 2014 election have since passed away (Billy Pierce and Minnie Minoso). |

				The HOF case for Minnie
			 Quote:
What with Latinos lobbying the commissioners' office for a Roberto Clemente Day I have often wondered why they didn't get behind a Cooperstown campaign for Minnie Minoso with equal fervor. Minoso was the first black latino to play in the majors (1949) and the first black latino to make an all-star team (1951). He made the American League all-star team seven years between 1951 and 1960 and most of those years he was in his 30s. He also won three Gold Gloves for Outfielder excellence in the first four years it was awarded. Only a few American League stars (all of whom are HOFers) surpass Minoso's overall offensive stats in his eleven years as an everyday player (1951-1961). Had the color barrier fallen earlier and he could have made a major league team when he was about 20 years old I have no doubt that Minoso would have compiled statistics that would have made him a no-brainer choice for the HOF.
