MG 007 (& 008) is Nate Snell

These photos are not Mike Smith, minor leaguer. I couldn't find any career minor league pitcher named Mike Smith who was in the Orioles' system. MG 007 and the Topps card of Nate Snell are presented first below. Note especially the mole next to Snell's left eye in both photos. Oddly, the Orioles had two right handed pitchers named Michael Anthony Smith in their spring camp in 1989. To keep them distinct from each other, they called them by their states of their birth. Mississippi Mike Smith is shown in the Pirates uniform. Texas Mike is shown in his Topps debut card with the Orioles. They both had some major league experience, but their stints with the O's were in Orioles uniforms with an underscore on the chest, later than the uniform shown in MG 007. I am now utterly convinced of my own incompetence. I swear I will not attempt any further IDs. Those of you with the resources (I consider it a gift) please carry the project forward. Sorry, yet again, for my errors. I promise. |

 Lynn Lovenguth 1955

For a guy who had only two cups of coffee, with the '55 Phillies and '57 Cards, I've read a lot of hand-wringing over the years about photos of Lovenguth. To be fair, no color image of him has ever appeared. Yet, for whatever it's worth, here he is at literally the last stop in his pro career, in the color team photo of the 1961 PCL Padres. |

 Albie Pearson 1958

A few more Dexters. Depending on whether the Angels really adopted the "CA" cap in September, 1965, Albie Pearson played as few as two games in this uniform. This is the same image as in the '66 Dexter card. Last edited by Merkle923; 08-04-2017 at 02:53 AM. |

 Jack Aker 1964

Another Dexter capturing a rare uniform. There's a Brace of the veteran reliever during his only season in Oakland (1968) but I think this is the only known color image of him in the A's home uniform.

 Orlando (Marty) Martinez 1962

And here's the well-traveled utility man in the only color shot I've seen of him in an Atlanta uniform, apart from the one shot Topps used on both his 1967 and 1968 cards.

Leon, Healy and Wright are all in the Hall of Fame hoard that McWilliams entrusted to them. Can be bought (have Leon and Wright), but not shared per the rules of the Hall. Last edited by Rainmaker; 03-02-2017 at 05:35 PM.

 '67 Braves, '68 A's, Notes

I'm afraid no on all the Braves and A's. I'll point out as a reminder that Bob Uecker would not have been in Atlanta's camp in 1967 (he was at Philadelphia's but I believe the negative was pilfered from the file before I received it, because there was no image of him, but there was a Uke autograph).

Hello. Are there any known photo's of Jack Baldschun in an Oakland A's Uni? I seen him listed on there 1969 Spring Roster.

By 1969 Baldschun appeared out of a job. Although he was still technically Cincinnati’s property, in February, at the request of the Oakland A’s, the Reds, who planned to release Baldschun, granted him a 30-day trial with Oakland; 1969 was an expansion year and the A’s had lost several pitchers to the new Seattle Pilots franchise, so Oakland was in desperate need of bullpen help. In Arizona, despite pitching well for Oakland, Baldschun was the last player cut. Later, Oakland manager Hank Bauer, who’d been the Baltimore manager when Baldschun briefly became an Oriole, told the press that he’d wanted to keep Baldschun, but that owner Charlie Finley wanted to go with youth. On the afternoon of a spring-training game against San Diego, Bauer told Padres manager Preston Gomez that he was being forced to cut Baldschun, but that he thought the right-hander could help the Padres. So Gomez contacted Cincinnati, confirmed that Baldschun was available (he’d been released), and signed the veteran pitcher. The bargain-basement move was a boon for both Baldschun and San Diego, as he appeared in 61 games and won seven times for the expansion franchise.
