Good point. The only position players on the 1927 Cubs who were left-handed hitters were Charley Grimm, Earl Webb, Cliff Heathcote, and Tommy Sewell. Among those four, Heathcote is the only one who comes close to resembling the player holding the bat in the sequence of Cub photos. I flipped the photo so he could be seen properly as a left-handed batter, but it still didn't quite seem to be a match with Heathcote's face, so I'm stumped on this one.

Tony Zardon, 93, was the 4th oldest Washington Senator
The story that labeled Jose 'Tony' Zardon the oldest living Washington Senator at the time he passed away this week at age 93 ERRED!. He was actually the fourth oldest living player from the original Senators franchise. (See Page 1528, Section 30550)
The correct order is. 1,.Eddie Robinson (9th oldest living major leaguer) - age: 96 yrs., 3 months. 2. Sam Mele (14th oldest major leaguer) - age 95 years, 2 months. 3. Gil Coan (16th oldest major leaguer) - age: 94 years, 10 months. 4. Jose 'Tony' Zardon (23rd oldest major leaguer) was age 93 years, 10 months old until the time of his death on March 21. Bob Kuzava (93 years, 9 months) now becomes the 4th oldest living Washington Senator with Zardon's passing. Last edited by dennis_keith; 03-27-2017 at 08:33 AM. |

Marty Callaghan 1922
One more attempt to identify the Cub holding the bat in the photo on the previous page....
Dto7 suggested in a private message that the Cub cap may have been from the seasons 1922 or 1923, or possibly even earlier. That got me to thinking about the full series of photos. The scoreboard seems to be the same in all of them. The rest of the background is reasonably consistent as well. It does not seem to be a bad assumption that the photos were all taken on the same day. The Cub manager is wearing a uniform from the 1922 or 1923 season. So I concentrated my search on left-handed hitting position players from those two seasons. The best fit seems to be Marty Callaghan. A photo of him is on the left. A flipped photo of the mystery batter, so that he is properly shown as a lefty, is shown on the right. Having looked at the managers' photo again, I see that the Pirates' uniform is from no earlier than 1923. So the managers in the first photo must have been Bill Killefer (Cubs) and Bill McKechnie (Pirates). Last edited by Cusick; 03-26-2017 at 10:47 PM. Reason: Add P.S. |

Great work, Dto7 and Cusick. I don't have a lot of time to dig in right now but based on the 1923 date we can determine that the player in image #2 is likely Cubs third baseman Bernie Friberg. A cursory exam of comparables at least generally supports that assumption. The left-handed thrower with the narrow nose in image #3 may well be Howard Fitzgerald. I'm afraid that, for the time being, I don't have time to do a more in-depth analysis on that image or the fourth photo.

Master Checklist Updated
Thanks to Hall of Famer keonleafs for continuing his daunting project of revisiting the Topps Vault checklist. He has cleaned up the mega-folder of BC, and made changes in BE and BF.
Corrections have been made in the list at Chop Country and a list of them is in the messages. LINK Last edited by Rainmaker; 03-27-2017 at 11:10 PM. |

Another Vault Yields 'Whales'
There is another, largely undocumented yet very accessable “vault” of player images from the last 20-25 years. The images, all shot in traditional baseball card poses during spring training when possible or during the season when necessary, belong to a dealer and collector who does business on eBay at unclemaxie.
“Max” sells newer images regularly on eBay, but his archives go well back into the late 80s and are exhaustively documented. Usually, these are only sold on direct request, not through eBay, and under copyright protection since “Max” retains ownership of the negative in most non-eBay transactions. But after several months of communication with him, he has graciously allowed me to post some “white whales” and “phantoms” that I was stunned to find he had in high quality negatives. He agreed, in part, because these are largely obscure players that I agreed to purchase two different poses of, in order for him to allow their posting. Unclemaxie retains all copyrights to the images that follow. |

Joe Ayrault 1996
Joe Ayrault was an organizational catcher for the Braves from 1990-97, and many of these guys have been turning up in the Topps Vault over the years. One day, he, too, figures to show up, but this strong shot from spring training of 1997 figures to be the best we'll ever get in an Atlanta uniform.
Ayrault played in seven games for the 1996 Braves, going 1-for-5. |

Dean Hartgraves 1995
This left-hander made it onto a couple of cards as a member of the Astros in 1995-96 and there are plenty of Getty photos of him as a Giant in 1998. But this shot is another from spring training of 1997 after he appeared in 20 games for the Braves at the end of the '96 season.
He never made it back to the bigs for Atlanta, appearing in 50 games for Gwinnett in the 1997 season. And I acquired this to have a photo of him with Atlanta for the first time. Maybe there are others; I did not find them. |

Hensley Meulens 1989
One more from spring training of 1997. I was shocked that this existed at all, as Muelens was in camp as a non-roster invitee and was released on March 20, well before they broke camp.
As I explained to unclemaxie, this image holds all kinds of neat significance because Meulens was the first true breakout major leaguer from the island nation of Curacao, and the Braves are the team most closely associated with the country with a who's who of natives as Andruw Jones, Andrelton Simmons, Randall Simon and Jair Jurrjens. |

are you sure that is Joe McCarthy with Bill McKechnie? It doesn't look like McCarthy, and it looks more like Bill Killefer. And it has to be before 1927, as McKechnie's last year with the Pirates was 1926.

Rod Bolton 1993
A neat phantom, as Bolton never pitched for the Reds despite being a workhorse for their Triple-A Nashville club in 1997-98, winning a total of 21 games and averaging over 170 innings each season.
Bolton's major league career was spent entirely with the White Sox over parts of 1993 and 1995. There has been exactly one image of Bolton to appear in the Topps Vault so far, with Chicago. |

Jim Wilson 1985
Jim Wilson, a onetime second-round pick of the Indians, first reached the majors in 1995 with the Tribe -- a cup of coffee that lasted four games.
After a one-year side trip to the Twins' organization in 1987, he hooked up with the Mariners in '88 and returned to the major leagues with Seattle in 1989. This time, he got to play in five games before returning to the minors for good. Haven't seen anything other than minor league cards, but here he is. |

Jorge Fabregas 1994
Wrapping up my early Christmas present from unclemaxie is this one, who a number of Braves collectors probably have long assumed Jorge Fabregas was a unicorn.
The Braves, the seventh of nine teams Fabregas played for during his nine-year career, picked him up on August 31, 1999, after being waived by the Marlins. He played in six games and went 0-for-8, was released during the off-season and signed with Kansas City for the 2000 season. |

Red Sox D's
Looking for help, as indicated, with the hard-to-find Sox players:
DEININGER, Pep (with the Sox) DEVINEY, Hal (something better than the BR pic) DODGE, Sam (better than BR) DOHERTY, John (with Sox) DORSEY, Jim (Color) DUBUC, Jean (Sox) DUMONT, George (Sox) DANZIG, Babe (Sox) DEVINE, Mickey (Sox) DEVORMER, Al (Sox) DIDIER, Bob (Sox) DONAHUE, John (better than BR) DONNELS, Chris (Sox) DORAN, Tim (Sox) DOYLE, Danny (better than the image currently posted on this forum). Many thanks - and again, there seems to be a number of these previously posted by another member, which come up in the search, but which seem to have all been stripped from the forum. Any ideas what that's about? Thanks! |

Already dealt with about a dozen posts above yours. I just gave the information from the eBay listing. The 20s are WAAAAAAYYYY out of my zone of knowledge. However, others here pointed out that the Cubs uniforms were from 1923, not 1926 as the seller stated. So, yes, that's Bill Killefer and not McCarthy. And I never said 1927. Just pointed out another of the seller's mistakes. He'd said in the listing that 1926 was the first year the park was known as "Wrigley Field". But it was still Cubs Park until '27.
