Before we open today's can of Vault worms, want to put out there tha MI 728-729 is Gary Marks, former Cardinals first-round pick, a lefty and who had won 15 games in 1971. This image matches others who were in camp in 1972.

Sadly, Marks passed away last August at age 67. This photo was posted with his obit.

Topps Vault photos 808 and 809 do not depict Al Montreuil. Instead, they show pitcher Ron Matney. Matney was a non-roster invitee with the Cubs in 1970.

The photo on the left is MI 809. The photo on the right is Topps Vault EL 398. It was identified as Matney in April, 2016.

I have acquired a much better resolution image of this early ballplayer recently than the one that was posted last month. He played in 6 games for the 1875 Chicago White Stockings and really did not hit well finishing at a .130 average.

As with Keerl, this image is much higher resolution than the one I posted last month. Smiley wasn't much of a hitter but seemed to keep getting chances in the big leagues. He died at a very young age of 28, just 2 years removed from his last game in the majors and only a few months after his final minor league appearance.
