1888 Hutchinson

Agreed, amazing research and the obscure team photos are invariably a significant source of information. The Hutchinson team photo I believe also depicts Major Leaguers George Meakim, Toby Lyons and Guerdon Whiteley.

Faatz as shown is Charles Faatz the brother of Major Leaguer Jay, the very close resemblance could lead one to thinking it is Jay.

Corkhill is not Major League Pop but Frank Corkhill.

The 1886 Wilkes Barre team photo depicts long time Major Leaguer Bill Hallman who though primarily gained fame as a Second Baseman was the Phillies starting catcher in his debut Major League season 2 years later. The inclusion of Harry Brooks is intriguing as a player of the same name is listed in the 5th edition of 'Total Baseball' as appearing for the AA New York team for one game on 7/24/86 that year. The birthplace and date of birth of the Wilkes Barre player listed in Baseball Reference matches that of the player listed by Total Baseball. Brooks is not listed by Baseball Reference as playing in the AA. Presumably someone knows the story of why at one time Brooks was thought of as playing for New York and then that viewpoint was subsequently dismissed. Curiously he is also listed on the roster of the 1886 Scranton Miners. Was able to check the box score of the game played that day in New York when the Metropolitans hosted Louisville thanks to an on-line copy of Sporting Life. Brooks was listed as the starting pitcher and batted ninth but only once. Not a shock as Louisville scored 9 times in the first and 4 more times in the 9th. Centre-Fielder Chief Roseman then took over the pitching and Tom Forster entered the game as the centre-fielder. 'Total Baseball' confirms this account as he is listed with a career E.R.A. of 36.00 and a career total of 2 innings pitched. Brooks also contributed 5 errors in his short Major League stay, however it appears now to be the established view it was not Brooks but someone else who started that fateful game!

Maybe this is an oversight on my part but in addition to the 2 players highlighted the 1886 Scranton Miners also depicts Shorty Howe who I understood to be a missing player. Other Major Leaguers shown on the team photo could include Sandy McDermott, Dasher Troy, Frank Brill, Gene Bagley and Ed Kennedy. The inclusion of Brill has additional significance as the image we currently have of him is well after his playing days. Similarly the image of manager Dan O'Leary, though not depicted here as a player, appears to represent an image much closer to his playing days than the one currently portrayed in the facepack. Furthermore it is my understanding that the only image previously available of Gene Bagley is a line drawing so this photo represents a further advancement.

Al Nichols has been included in the facepack for some time. An 1877 Louisville team photo can be found on Craig Brown's excellent site researching 19th century uniforms. There appears to be some conflict in respect of the player identifications. I am happy to privately provide a copy of the source document with the previous existing identifications if necessary. The identifications on this document are as follows (l-r) Standing :- Shaffer, Snyder, Devlin, Nichols. Seated :- Hall, Craver, Gerhardt, Latham, Hague Floor :- Lafferty, Crowley. The conflict does not alter the identification of Nichols.

Other Major Leaguers included in the Belleville team photo are Ducky Hemp, Paul McSweeney and Chappie McFarland.

Major Leaguers shown in the Davenport team photo also include Pat Whitaker, Phil Routcliffe, Joe Kappel, Sam Nicholl, Bob Allen, Heinie Kappel, Jerry Harrington, Billy Rhines, Jack Fanning and Chuck Lauer. Analysis of the team photo depicting the Kappel brothers against the existing images of the two might well open up a debate as to whether the 2 brothers are misplaced on the Davenport team photo. In addition it should be noted that Heinie (right on the middle row) is listed as 6 years younger of Joe (left on the middle row)?

I believe the Murphysboro Clarkes team photo also depicts Major Leaguer Jack 'Rip' Egan.

Mr. Jones

Current TV listing says this is Jim Jones, but I'm thinking it's hard-to-find in Pirates duds Tim Jones (pictured is his image from his 1978 Topps 4-player rookie). Agreed?

Mark Budaska 1978

I've been looking for a decent image of Budaska for some time so I thought some others might have been as well - in today's TV releases.

Tom Bruno - Cardinals

Current TV listing for a guy who made 45 appearances for the Red Birds over 1978-1979, and yet doesn't seem to appear in color as a Cardinal anywhere else...

Please ID this guy

This Senators pitcher was originally in the Vault as GC 667-668, but is one of the few images released by Topps that has no ID on the checklist. Can anyone supply an ID or a guess? This is a one-time request, so no lectures please about Vault protocol.

Gerry Staley 1947 / Wes Covington 1956 / Stan Johnson 1960

This is like a group photo from a union meeting of rare image guys.

On June 10, 1961, the Kansas City A's made one of those seeming Titanic Deck Chair deals, sending Andy Carey, Ray Herbert, Don Larsen, and Al Pilarcik to the White Sox for Wes Covington, Stan Johnson, Bob Shaw and Gerry Staley.

That's eight guys, only one of whom (Herbert) would be on their new team's 1962 Opening Day Roster just ten months later! The A's would in fact flip Staley and Covington before the season was over (Covington went from starting all 14 of the Braves' World Series games in '57 and '58, to playing for four different teams in '61).

Shaw turns up periodically with the A's but the other three are seldom seen and I've never seen the long-time reliever Staley (second from right) in a Kansas City uniform before, and I've previously only seen one small shot of Covington (second from left) with the A's. Transient outfielder Stan Johnson (right) is also pretty scarce.

Angel Hermoso 1967

Here's another recent pick-up filling a huge hole.

Angel "Remy" Hermoso made the Braves as a late-season call-up in his first year as a pro, 1967. This image would be from spring training of the following spring (the pinstripes are the way to discern '66-67 Braves unis from '68-71 versions). Went to the Expos in the Expansion Draft for 1969, reappeared with Cleveland in 1974.

Never seen him in an Atlanta uniform before; still searching for color.

Charlie Gessner 1886

UKBaseballfan and I have been engaged in correspondence for a few days regarding the 1889 Davenport team photo on the previous page which was the basis for the photo found and posted by Chickalooza. Chickalooza provided me with a clearer version of the Davenport photo to enable improved possibilities for identifications of the other major leaguers in the photo. (We have exemplars for the other major leaguers).
Based on our review, UKBaseballfan and I have concluded that the caption to the photo was presented in error. The names should have been presented so that they read from right to left in each row, instead of from left to right. Therefore, the player originally indicated to be Charlie Gessner was really Sam Nicholl. The player who is Charlie Gessner is second from the left in the middle row. An improved version of his image is attached below. Chickalooza has agreed to my posting it.

Tnfoto is aware of these discussions about the Davenport photo. The photo identifications in this photo may be addressed by SABR's Pictorial History Committee in the future, so it's possible that this isn't the end of the story.

Andy Beene Brewers 1983-1984

The Brewers had some famously good years in the late 70s and early 80s, thanks of course to a great offense with Yount, Molitor, Cecil Cooper, Ben Oglivie, Simmons, and Gorman Thomas, but even in the best of those years the Brewers pitching was never more than fairly good. The organization just did not produce many good pitching prospects, and when the offense collapsed in '84 the pitching couldn't cover. The Brewers did bring up some young arms around then, including Bob Gibson, Chuck Porter, Jaime Cocanower, and Tom Candiotti, but Gibson wasn't much like the real Bob Gibson, Porter got hurt, and Cocanower never mastered his control. Candiotti was dumped on Cleveland, where he took up the knuckler and became a good pitcher. Andy Beene was another of this group. A very tall guy who could throw pretty hard, Beene was not really much of a prospect; his AAA ERA was 4.70, and his control was marginal (145 BB, 163 SO). He made a few appearances for the Brewers in 83 and 84 and was shelled for a 10.45 ERA. A black and white photo (headshot) has been out there for a while, but here is a pretty good color shot. This is from ebay seller sportsfromthepastinc (SFTP).

Ned Yost Montreal Expos 1985

Ned Yost needs little introduction. He has had a long career as a manager, enjoying varying success of which the '15 series was the high point. Before that he was a player, catching in the majors for the Brewers (1980-83) Rangers (1984) and Expos (1985). To tell the truth, he was a pretty poor player. He spent most of his brief MLB career as backup, but unlike most reserve catchers he was not very good defensively. Ned did hit fairly OK in limited duty with the Brewers in 81 and 82 (.856 and .752 OPS), but when Simmons moved out of the catching job in 83 and Ned got more playing time his numbers went down sharply (.595 OPS). Despite this, Yost looked good to Doug Rader. Rader had come to hate Jim Sundberg and wanted him gone, so Sundberg went to Milwaukee and Yost took over Sunny's job as the Texas Rangers' No. 1 catcher. The result was a disaster which ruined Yost's playing career and ultimately helped get Rader fired (yay!). Poor Ned hit just .182 and before the season was out he had lost his job to rookie Donnie Scott (who was no better). The Rangers released Ned the following spring and he signed as a free agent with the Expos. He got into just five games for Montreal in '85, hit .182 again, and was done. A black and white headshot of him with the 'spos has been out there for a while, but here is a much better full body photo I found on picclick. It looks like some sort of team issue item. One thing I do like about Ned, he always seems to be smiling, as he is here. If you've had as many ups and downs in baseball as Ned's had you'd need to learn how to smile your way through too.
