Mike Sharperson 1987
Helping a friend find this made me realize that a member of the 1995 World Champion Braves is darn hard to find. Longtime Dodger Mike Sharperson closed out his MLB career with the Braves, getting into only seven games with seven at-bats in May, June and July. This photo was in a season wrap-up game program, and is the only color I've ever seen of Sharperson with the Braves.

Lefty Herring, 1899
Silas Herring appeared in two games as a pitcher with the National League Washington Senators in 1899, then played in 15 games as a first baseman and center fielder with the 1904 American League Washington Senators. This photo is from 1904, when Herring played for the Mount Pleasant Congregational Church team in Washington before joining the Senators in July. When the team obtained Frank Huelsman in a trade, Herring returned to the Sunday School League. |

Roy Foster 1970
About a week ago, I'd asked about Roy Foster (Indians, Rangers, etc.) images in the Help Finding Photos thread. Color preferred (non-card). No response as yet, but I was simultaneously doing what I could do, myself.
Roy had a brief 3 year major league career--all with Cleveland, but well-traveled in spite of that. He hit 23 home runs in his rookie season in 1970 (after hitting 24 for the Mets Tidewater affiliate the year before) and you just knew this guy was going to be a star. He was the Sporting News AL Rookie of the Year that year. But injuries happen and he dropped off quickly after that. He spent '74 and '75 in the Mexican Leagues and that was all she wrote--out of the game at age 29. And, oh yeah, he was with the Seattle Pilots in the spring of 1970, and not a lot of people can say they were once Seattle Pilots. Roy passed away in 2008 at the age of 62. So, if anyone here is interested, here are a few B&W Fosters. The first (and best) is a 1970 press photo I bought (photo by Richard Conway for The Cleveland Plain Dealer on April 6, 1970). The other two are from the 1971 Indians yearbook I bought (anybody wanna buy a 1971 Indians yearbook?). |

Dave Coleman 1977
Picked up this Brace image of the one-season BoSox outfielder with the others I posted earlier, but the ghastly color forced me to put it in the hands of a skilled photo doctor. I'd say he cured the patient (before and after). I also had him work on a number of others, including this Hal Breeden. Amazing what a skilled individual can do.

Missing Player Mike Ledwith 1874 Brooklyn Atlantics
I located a photo of Mike Ledwith, a one gamer for the 1874 Brooklyn Atlantics. He appeared for the 1876 London Tecumsehs as per David Nemec's research. The image appeared in the July 15, 1876 issue of Canadian Illustrated.

Missing Player Henry Kessler 1873-75 Brooklyn Atlantics 1876-77 Cincinnati Red Legs
I found this very nice woodcut of Henry Kessler in the February 23, 1900 Garnett (KS) Agitator. He played for the 1873-75 Brooklyn Atlantics and 1876-77 Cincinnati Red Legs.

Photo Located Jack Farrell 1874 Hartford
I located a photo of "Hartford" Jack Farrell of the 1874 Hartford club. His photo appeared in his obituary in the November 16, 1916 Hartford Courant. Confusingly, the obituary conflates his career with that of Jack Farrell and Joe Farrell, while also mentioning his minor league career. Given that it is his hometown paper, I assume the photo ID is correct.

Missing Player Vivian "Doc" Potts 1892 Washington and John W. Coleman 1890 Philadelphia Phillies
I located photos for Vivian "Doc" Potts who caught for the 1892 Washington club and John W. Coleman of the 1890 Phillies. The duo formed a battery for the Bristol, PA club in the 1890's. I was provided with a photo copy of an old team photo that appeared in the local paper of the early 1890's Bristol team by the Bristol Cultural and Historical Foundation. Using the newspaper reference, I was able to find a slightly better quality version on Newspapers.com The image appears in the January 27, 1954 issue of the Bristol Daily Courier.
Coleman is holding a bat, while catcher Potts is seated in front of a catcher's mask. |

Missing Player Tony Madigan 1886 Washington Nationals
I've located a woodcut of Tony Madigan, a pitcher for the 1886 Washington Nationals. He is pictured in a Kalamazoo team preview in the February 25, 1888 issue of Kalamazoo Daily Telegraph.

Maury Pierce 1884?
Though Tnfoto still has him in the Facepack, baseballreference has removed Pierce from the definitive records of the 1884 Washington team. In case anybody still wants an upgraded image of him, here is Pierce on the 1883 Washington Nationals along with the current image in the Facepack.
