skin files from steam, black box problem

Before the first update everything worked great, I uploaded the skin files from steam, put in my own award images and they appeared fine in game along with everything else.

After the update the little number boxes by e-mail and the new one by award totals (X2, X3...) are now solid black with the custom skins. I can revert back to default (where no files are shown in skin folder) and it works fine, I see the red circle and number of awards or e-mails, but if I load the custom skins (even without my custom images) the black boxes come back.

I have completely deleted the skin files, re-downloaded them and installed and the same thing happens. Its not the core game as it looks fine when I don't use the downloaded skin files.

Has anyone successfully used custom files with the steam skin download after the update?

one thing I noticed is that the original files gave it a white box with black letters, after the update it appears to be a red box with white letters now, but I am thinking the skin files on steam don't have that new set up and thats why I am getting the black boxes.
