Lineup Start Frequency Question

May be a dumb question, but just want to confirm.

When you set your lineups theres the option of having the backup start every 3rd game or 5th games or when the starter is tired against RHP or LHP, if I set my catcher to rest every 5th game against RHP but every 3rd game against LHP does that mean this situation is correct?

Game 1 (RHP) - starts
Game 2 (RHP) - starts
Game 3 (RHP) - starts
Game 4 (RHP) - starts
Game 5 (LHP) - starts
Game 6 (LHP) - starts
Game 7 (RHP) - rests
Game 8 (RHP) - starts
Game 9 (LHP) - rests

Hey UltimateAverageGuy Im wondering the same thing. I am struggling with getting predictable playing time for backups. To continue your example, what would happen if you used a third catcher playing against LHP every 6th game? Would he ever play or would the #2 catcher always play in that game since he plays every 3rd game?

It's unclear to me exactly what the algorithm is for this in OOTP. My hunch has always been that if you take the game number of the season, and divide by the backup frequency, if the remainder is 0, the backup plays. i.e. 18th game, backup set to every 3, 18/3=6 with no remainder, so backup plays. But in practice I don't think that is exactly what I observe.

If you wanted to get complicated, you would probably look at the ratio of games played implied by the backup settings; i.e., if the backup is set to every 3, then that means the backup plays 1/3rd of the games, and you would try to keep that ratio within some logic (i.e. the backup doesn't play consecutive games due to rotation settings alone).

Anyway, I'm guessing it's some form of the first version, though I don't think the algorithm is transparent. I admit I haven't actually looked into it too much.

drhay53. Your first paragraph summary has been my in game experience.

Thus I make sure to adjust the lineups manually before each game and do not use this feature. Most times, this goes real quick with no changes. Other times it takes a few minutes to move the tired players out and the subs in. Click Auto-play, review results and repeat. I could not play any other way because the outcome of today's game will affect my decision for tomorrow's. Did a player have an O-fer day, than he may be benched in favor of a sub that pitch-hit with a grand-slam to win the game.

The AI also makes a mess of the lineup when the subs come in as they simply do not go into the slot of the player they replace. They go wherever the AI wants to place them, usually number 8 and the number 8 batter goes somewhere else. This could lead to your catcher batting first. I've seen it way too many times to count.

Don't let the AI assist you in any way. It is not smarter than your are nor does it know what your goals are. You are the manger, do it yourself each day or use the 7-day lineup feature and plan out the subs/lineups ahead of time.

it should just be based on last day off... if vx lhp and 3 or more days (and set that way) since last day off, it should sub.. solves all problems.. keeps it relative and can't miss.

i have a sneaking suspicion it now works this way, but a few years ago, not so sure.

you'd just have to sim through some days and set guys up to test how it works.

i don't like 7 day lineups, i want to sim 1-2 months at a time and only interrupt for important stuff like injuries and the like. it was a bandaid to cover up an depth chart that doens't function well on its own. a corner cutter, if you will... not a solution. and a pain to set up over and over again ... when a repetitive process is so mind-numbingly simple.
