Why does the crowd cheer at foul balls?

The crowd seems to cheer at the majority of foul balls. Obviously, that doesn't happen in real life as the fans rarely get excited about foul balls.. So, I'm wondering why that feature exists in the game?

They are cheering at the little 3d guy that catches the foul ball in the stands.

When Gary Sheffield played for the Tigers he hit some really exciting foul balls.

I found which file has the "cheering foul ball" and deleted it. Now, when I have a foul ball, the crowd is just talking among themselves.

My dad told me that the crowds at Comiskey Park would cheer Luke Appling every time he hit nine or ten foul balls in a row. Of course, considering the kind of teams that Appling played on, that might have been the only thing they had to cheer about.

That is so funny. Richie Ashburn was the same way. He could foul off 2 strike pitches with the best of them. Souvenirs. Yay!! Once he hit a foul ball that hit a lady in the stands. While they were taking her out on a stretcher, Ashburn hit her again with another foul ball. Unbelievable!! lol

It wouldn't be so bad but for the fact that it's crazy loud.

Most people at the game don't have the perfect vantage point to see what's foul or not right away. If they hear loud contact, they might start cheering before they realize it's foul.

Also, people will cheer if someone in the stands makes a nice catch.

Of the various minor crowd-cheering-noise issues, it's not the most glaring IMO. I've hit walkoffs at home to completely silent fans...

Once the batter gets to 5 or so, everyone should be cheering because he's making the pitcher work. At 10 pitches or so you should stand up and cheer.

A better question to me is: why boo when the pitcher throws to first? Certainly in the 70s and 80s it deserved booing when a pitcher would throw over 5+ times whenever Rickey Henderson got on base. Those days and players are long gone, but yet the crowd boos a token throw keeping a mediocre baserunner honest. But anyway.

I watched a portion of the Yankee game last night and there was a commotion during foul balls. The camera wasn't following the ball so I don't know what was happening. I'm pretty sure it was people jostling for the ball and the crowd reacting to the person holding it up once they got it. Wasn't really cheering but it wasn't just regular crowd noise either.
