2018 Draft #1 Overall pick??

As an expansion team, I have the #1 overall pick in the 2018 draft? It's between:

21y RHP Casey Mize potential 60/50/70
18y SS Osiris Johnson potential 60/35/65/65/45 ... 55 D, 60 speed
17y C Noah Naylor potential 60/40/65/60/50.... 50 D, 60 speed

Any opinions? General drafting strategy?

unless the player is a Bryce Harper clone, i almost always would go with pitching. i believe pitching is the basic building block of any organization.

Pitchers if your looking for starters really depends on how many pitches they got and the ratings.

If it's only 3 pitches and 3rd is a undeveloped highly rated change up I wouldn't put faith into him developing.

So I would either skip a pitcher like that or move next off season and hope his potential stays high.

Mize has 4 pitches all with potential of 60/65/65/65. I think I'm going with him.

defer to next year? lol

i agree with mitch. unless it's a 81+/100 contact and ~80+ power guy i am typically going with an SP in round 1... more so pick 1.

a pretty good sp has greater trade value than a pretty good batter that you will see at any round.

that being said, if pitching prospects are truly atrocious, i will go for a non-trout batter on occasion if they are nearing that quality.

based on what you posted, i'd go with whomever you believe has the most trade value. if they turn out to be keepers, cool beans too.

Screenshot it that will help. I can say Mize was a beast in one of my most recent game files.

Normally I would agree with the others but this time I like the catcher. Good catchers are hard to come by.

Mize has gone first in the draft in every standard modern file I've played out in 19 so far. He's been anywhere from well above average to insane shutdown ace, hasn't really busted in a game yet. Considering he went first IRL for a good reason too... I'd say he's the safest bet of any player in this year's OOTP.

Just my luck - I'm in year 2029 of my Tigers franchise and I took Mize first overall. Had a bad arm injury in his 2nd season and completely flamed out after that. Never made the majors...Gorman, Madrigal, and Seth Beer probably ended up as the best players from that class in my sim.

Here is Mize who made it up briefly as a RP on my team in 2020 but he got injured. Here he is from my current 2021 opening day. I will probably have him in the bullpen all year instead of SP. As Chris Rodriquez a 2016 4th round pick absolutely exploded in current and potential and ended up starting for me end of 2020.

Also attached Naylor who is on Baltimore in my file. Just to give you a look in 1 possible future

Trade the pick for 3 future #1's and a 2nd rounder.
