Question The new exit velocity display

Is it indicative of something or is it just cosmetic?

For example, if I see a guy making a lot of "loud outs" where even his out dots are 90-100+ MPH exit velocity, should I consider that like "he's doing good things, just getting unlucky?"

Is it a good proxy for the BABIP rating?

Did the game always do/consider this and now it's just being shown?

It's cool to see. Even cooler if it isn't just cosmetic and another possible variable/data point to consider when evaluating a talent.

Fangraphs usually has a big write up on exit velocity if you wanted to learn about it.

Is that how it's used in OOTP as well?

I can understand why it's useful in the real game. That's why I'm glad to see it in OOTP.

Just wondering if it's just a label or if it's meaningful in the OOTP universe.

Where is exit velo?

I started my season (save) prior to the patch that contained the exit velo update. I thought I read this is supposed to show up on a players spray chart when you hover over various "dots", but nothing is showing up when I do that?

It's showing fine for me by hovering cursor over the dots.

I don't know for sure but my guess is you would start seeing that data on new spray chart dots AFTER the patch, so the previous dots prepatch wouldn't have that data.

I feel positive it is cosmetic in OOTP. (It probably is a useful stat IRL).
OOTP ratings are based on stats going back to 1880 something. Those ratings are used to determine the outcome of the pitcher/batter match up (after adjustments for for park factors and wind).
OOTP (and the other computer baseball games) try to replicate the basic stats of players (HRs, singles, doubles, stolen bases, stikouts, walks and a couple others). They are not trying (and do not have the ability) to replicate the exit velocity of Babe Ruth or Barry Bonds.
I suppose if they want to recode the game and use exit velocity they could but I think that would be a major project and if the purpose is to get the same stats we get now???

If it's cosmetic, it's a bummer, but I'm still hopeful that it's some amalgamation of GAP, POW, and CON with just a dash of the EYE thrown in, interacting with whatever pitching ratings allow a pitch to be hit.

Since it's being tracked, seems like home run distance and exit velocity should be a sortable stat.

Also, why does the game occasionally neglect to give a home run distance, I wonder? It doesn't show up in the PbP from time to time, and if it doesn't show in the PbP, it won't apparently won't show up in the logs either.

I have played games post-patch, and those spray charts do not show EV either (I did not start a new save after the patch - and assume this is not needed). Should I try re-downloading the patch again?

I don't know that you'd need to start a new game, but FWIW just hovering over the dots doesn't display EV for me, I have to click the dot.

Also was wondering this, because right now I don't really know how to use the exit velocity info in game, would be cool also if we could have an average exit velocity for each hitter, just so i can have an easier idea and not have to hover over a bunch of dots

I would because I see them.

I click the dots and the EV shows up.

Does EV show up in your game logs? It should show up next to the result of a play with the rest of the detail info (ball location, etc).

Any hits/plays before the last patch won't have EV, but anything after will show them. So if you are simply continuing a game started earlier, then some plays on the spray chart may not have them listed.

Yes, thanks for your replies. I now an able to click on the "dots" in the spray charts and see the EV.

However, in thinking more about the value added of this stat, I think its likely more useful for the GM-type players versus the manager-type players (i.e. useful for evaluating trade proposals, etc). Also, agree with a poster above that if EV could be "averaged" and then added as a statistic to look at rather than arbitrarily clicking on individual dots, now that would be a nice addition.

Yeah, we'll certainly look to other ways to display it going forward. It's stored a little differently than some of the other stats, so it might be a little more challenging to get into the same lists as they are, but we'll certainly keep adding ways to give you more interesting information.

Although I would caution against putting in too much stock in it. I will say at the moment it's probably a little more cosmetic than prescriptive, although it may still be able to tell you a little - for example, if a player has a lot of 100mph groundball outs, maybe he got unlucky with defense around him, even if his BABIP isn't depressed. Although maybe he didn't I'll also say that I haven't done a ton of checking to make sure the numbers exactly line up with MLB values, so we probably have less sub-70mph plays, and may have too many >100mph ones, for example. Or maybe we don't
