Pitcher's Stuff Rating

Thinking about a replacement for RP Will Harris.
His basic stuff rating is 119.

When I sort all available RP by stuff, he currently sits at 93.
His card value is up by 9 and his stuff is down by 26?!?

If his stuff is down by that wide margin, how much did his movement and control change?

Why is that?

82+105=93.5 ... maybe it's a bug and it's actually using the average of the pitches?

All pitchers get a boost to Stuff when used as a reliever. The baseline Stuff amount you see is I think what you would get if you used him as a starter. Kind of odd, but it makes for a kind of direct comparison between pitchers.

When you sort by stuff, for some reason (probably backend database limitations), all pitcher stuff ratings are displayed as what they would be if they were starting pitchers.

Essentially, if you search for relievers, sorting by stuff is not very useful.

Also, he's up by 9 total since the start of the year. It looks like his STUFF rating has dropped by 1 and his MOV and CNT have both gone up 2-3 points since his last bump from 88 or 90.

Dave LaRoche is a LH with a 100 FB and 114 SL, and the market shows he has 128 stuff. AJ Minter is a LH with a 100 FB and 114 SL, and the market shows he has 116 stuff.

wow I never made this connection. I thought the "stuff" shown in the auction house was some wonky internal value like the movement rating was before applying GB/FB from the initial database and just ignored it in my searches.

So is it necessary to set your pitcher's position to RELIEVER in his profile before using him as a reliever in the game - to get the better 'stuff'? Or does it happen on its own just by putting him into a reliever slot? Thanks

But does it really have any impact on in-game performance?

It doesn't change on its own. It will change if the bullpen is set by the AI without moving the starter back to the starting lineup. The AI will change the "role" to match how he's actually being used.

What Matt is saying is that the "role" doesn't actually matter, if he's used as a reliever he'll be working off his reliever stuff value.

It's easy to understand this if we go with how the sim engine works. Sim engine, like any computer program, takes at the actual number behind the scene and jam that into how the player is used in the match. The sim engine doesn't give a crap about the number on the UI, that's to show players and help them understand how the player do on the categories. The number is static behind the scene; if Will Harris's stuff is 200 on the engine, then dude has 200 stuff on whatever role he pitches in the sim.

TL;DR Toying with the roles to get a higher stuff does absolutely nothing to the player's actual Stuff value. Will Harris will always pitch like Will Harris no matter what trick you want to do with him on the role.

Yeah, personally I do like to change people to the role they're pitching, because it's nice to know what actual stuff (and fatigue) are coming into play at that time. But it's all calculated internally for their actual in-game usage, so you can't "trick" the AI to different stuff or fatigue by setting the role.

The AI can't be tricked, but gullible and ignorant players like myself sure can be
