Buddy Dear 1927
This image of Dear, when he attended college at Virginia Tech in 1927, is a lot closer to his playing time than the current Facepack photo.

Thanks for the updates! I'm going to contact the Find-a-Grave submitter about the Bass image. I've never seen that one before.
The Cavanaugh image on Baseball-Reference comes from the Library of Congress Spalding Collection, and has been identified as a famous professional billiards player, not the ballplayer. The Doyle image comes on Baseball-Reference comes from the 1870 Rockford Forest Citys team composite photo. It is not the same Doyle who played a few games for the 1872 Nationals. I've been trying to get them to remove both of those images (along with several other mis-identified players). While Bass and Cavanaugh died relatively young, Doyle lived a long life and was a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy following his baseball career, maybe via Ancestry there might be a military or passport photo of him?

I know that Chickalooza has gone through but there are always new images (like the Bass image I hadn't seen) and different search techniques/criteria. If the Missing Player List entry has a CAUTION: tag in one of the last two cells, there has probably been one or more submission for that player in the past, which further research has proven to be a false lead.
We're down to the really tough ones now, especially among managers, so when I find a "new" image, I'm always skeptical at first until I can verify.

Yes, the Bass image is new. If a photo is on baseball-reference, but the player is still on tnfoto's missing player list, the bb-ref photo is almost certainly incorrect (or at the very least has significant unanswered question).
I am happy to answer any questions about missing player research and alway happy to have some more diggers! My experience has found the following resources very good for photo searching: Searching old newspapers: newspapers.com, genealogybank.com, newspapers.google.com, newspaperarchive.com and other newspaper sites. Ancestry.com I've found quite a few photos on here, digging through family trees and old passport photos Contacting local genealogical and historical societies These are particularly good to contact if the player in question was from a specific area and spent a lot of time there. This is how I got started on this fascinating search. I wanted to write a SABR bio for Bob McKinney, a 2 gamer for the 1901 Philadelphia Athletics, one of two (now three) McKinneys (my surname) in major league history. He was from McSherrystown, Pennsylvania and one of my research strategies involved contacting the Hanover Area Historical Society, and the archivist there was kind enough to send some photocopies from an area history, that included a nice team photo of a local club that featured Bob McKinney. Turns out there was no known photo and that was my first find. Quote:

Photo Located John Donnelly Washington Blue Legs (1873) Philadelphia Whites (1874)
I found this photo of John Donnelly after review TNFoto's list and noticing Donnelly's name (which wasn't in my records).
Thankfully, a quick search for his obit yielded a photo. It appeared in the December 25, 1913 Minneapolis Star Tribune. |
