This photo is from the Windsor, Ontario, Star of August 1, 1998, as that newspaper announced Herndon's firing as hitting coach and replacement by Toby Harrah in that role.

P.S. Oops. I'm late to the party. I missed the posting showing that tnfoto had already provided a shot of Herndon as a Tiger hitting coach.

Other than Onslow, the only other Sox coach I need is Paul Krichell, who wore the Sox uni only in 1920.

Krichell is one of the few people on my coaches list I'm still not sure about. He was hired by Ed Barrow as a coach/scout, but based on what I've seen, he was basically a scout, a role for which he was much better known. I still have him on my list as needed but I'd like to see more about his actual coaching duties in 1920.

While there isn't an "official" criteria for coaches back that far, the late David Vincent from Retrosheet, Gary Gillette from The Emerald Guide, and I agreed that only in-game, in-uniform coaches would be included in our coaching databases. As much as I love listing early 20th century coaches, If I can't find evidence that Krichell was an in-uniform, in-game coach, I'm likely to remove him from my list.

There was a national news story around June 18, 1920 that the Red Sox had signed Krichell "to coach the pitchers." That was the only evidence I could find which associated the word coach with him in 1920. That news story did not place him in uniform with the Red Sox or suggest a link to a particular game. By July 13, there was a report he was a Red Sox scout. Many other reports relating to his scouting position followed after that. I used both newspapers.com and genealogybank.com in trying to find more coaching evidence for Krichell.

The sources I use most frequently to identify coachs and their assignments (1st base, bullpen, etc.) are the Baseball Cube, Retrosheet and BR Bullpen. I am seeing more conflicts between the data provided by the BR Bullpen and the Baseball Cube in particular.

Any idea which source tends to be the most reliable??
