WRVR Week 16 Series Recap

The Gold Watch with George, Anne, and Rex

G: Welcome all to "The Gold Watch." I am your host George Cooper. Joining me today are Anne Hargraves and Rex Goodman. Our final score in this mid-afternoon finish is the Egret Scrappers 9 and the Fairline Hill Estates Yao Guai 7. The Scrappers avoid being swept at home and move back to a game ahead of the Yao Guai with today's win. That means that Egret is in sole possession of second place in the Railroad League, while the Yao Guai fall back into sole possession of third.

Anne and Rex, tell me all about your take on this weekend's match up. But before you do that, let me mention that this matchup happened at Fallon Field at Egret Tours Marina. Our sponsor for this series has been Fallon's Department Store. Make plans to travel to Fallon's Department Store right across from Milton General Hospital on your next trip south. Come before the end of July, and you can get half off your first gold watch. That's Fallon's Department Store, east of Egret Tours Marina and south of Fairline Hill Estates, right across from Milton General Hospital.

A: I love Fallon's! This cream dress I'm wearing today came from there. I also got this silver locket.

R: They are as elegant as you, Madame Anne.

G: Yes, they are. Well, let's go ahead and jump into the awards. As we mentioned, the Yao Guai took two of three this series. Are we trending back towards the winning team for awards this week, or will it be similar to last weekend's game where the losing team swept the awards?

This week's show was brought to you by Easy City Downs. "When you're in town, settle down with Easy City Downs." I've got my money on The Boston Blaster tonight. What about you Anne and Rex?

A: We will have to see. We only had two lead changes all weekend, and neither came after the fifth inning. Since today's game was the later of the two comebacks. and since the last inning of scoring was in the bottom of the fifth, I am going to award the Bottoms Up Award to a player for the Scrappers. That player is Slosh Nicklepenny. With two outs in the fifth and the score tied at 5-5, Nicklepenny delivered an RBI single to score two runs and give Egret the 7-5 lead, which turned out to be the final score. Congratulations to Mr. Slosh Nicklepenny. I love your name and bottoms up to you!

R: Nicklepenny reminds me of a bit villain in an O'Doyle piece. All pomp with the right amount of circumstance. To follow, I am in charge of our Sportiest Sport. Now, since a player from the losing team is the usual suspect in this award, I see little occasion to break ranks. Therefore, I will go with the person who led the way for Egret's one win, catcher Tony Tamez. In Game Three, he delivered with three hits in four at bats with two doubles, two runs scored, including the go-ahead sixth run. Also, he had three RBU in thee game. For his efforts in helping his team remain in second place, Tony Tamez is the Sportiest Sport. Also, as I am contracted to add before my time is up, "Shop at Fallon's and make yourself look like a gentleman, even if you are not. Like George and me."

G: Never sell yourself short, Rex. You are a gentleman!

Let me finish up this week's "The Gold Watch" show presented by Fallon's Department Store with the Charles River Trio's Most Outstanding Player Award. Surprise! A player from the winning team this weekend gets the award. That's right. This week's top player goes to the Yao Guai's pitcher in Game 1, Bow Rome. In 8 and 2.3 innings, he allowed two earned runs on nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts. He also added a hit and scored to help himself with the bat.

Well, that will do it. We are playing an afternoon game, so we do not yet know where we are going next weekend. There are not a whole lot of choices. We are close to the WRVR studio from here at Egret Tours Marina, so we are going to keep up with the games today and report from the studio tonight where we will be next week, so stay tuned.

Since we don't know where we're broadcasting, I think it only appropriate that our ending song be Ella Fitzgerald's "Undecided": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpnDbJjBW8A. Tell us, Ella.

July 2296 - News and Notes - July 19-20

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

19 July 2296 - CBO Roster Expansion

Rosters across the CBO expanded today, offering clubs and fans alike a glimpse at future prospects at the highest level of competition in the league.

Each team is allowed to add three of its reserve players to the main roster, moving the number from 25 players to 28 players. This expansion lasts until the regular season ends on August 15, so each team gets to experience the expanded roster for four series, 12 games in all.

20 July 2296 - CBO Agrees to Coaching Staffs, Umpire Union

Commonwealth Baseball Organization commissioner Nate Howard released two press releases today pertaining to coaches and umpires.

It had been proposed recently that the CBO use a full coaching staff, and Howard has revealed that it will be a part of the offseason. Howard said that his office had already started collecting a pool of coaches, and his staff would vet all potential coaches using the G.O.A.T. test and a series of training to ensure all coaches enter the league as qualified for their jobs. Howard also mentioned former players could join the coaches pool after their careers are complete.

Howard said that he thinks a coaching staff will help lead the league toward a diverse playing style and teams adding their own scouting department may make teams target different types of players. He mentioned the excitement of watching a "small ball" team hit and run its way to victory, while the excitement of "gorilla ball" could always draw a crowd.

Currently four teams--East Boston Prep, The Slog, Lexington, and Jamaica Plain--have their own managers, but all four teams lack a full staff.

One currently unemployed legends of the birth of baseball in the Commonwealth is Squatty O'Sullivan. O'Sullivan led the Diamond City's traveling team, the Travelin' Traders. That team had won 25 games in a row at one point against various settlement and other traveling teams. O'Sullivan had the "two-headed snake" pitching duo of Terrence Artman and Quentin Malone, who were selected in the first round of the inaugural draft by Salem and Universtity Point, respectively.

In addition to a pool of coaches and scouts, Howard mentioned that each team could name an official team doctor, which he called a "trainer." There is also going to be an official pool of umpires permanently installed. The current group of 96 umpires, all of whom are ghouls, will now be kept on permanently.

Howard stated that he wanted ghouls to have a place in the CBO. Since their bodies are made up of irradiated flesh, which makes their bodies vulnerable to extreme injuries, ghouls are not allowed to play in the CBO. However, Howard deemed umpiring to be safe and teams know that players will be permanently banned from the CBO should they ever strike an umpire.

Howard and the umpires union are in negotiations to make a contract to make the deal official, but Howard said the agreement was definite and the number of caps paid is the only question mark.

20 July 2296 - CBO Players of the Week

BL - BL Player of the Week Goes to Jones of Nordhagen Beach: It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Brotherhood League, but last week Tomas Jones of the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Jones rocked opposing pitching for a .500 average (9-for-18), no home runs and 6 RBIs to come away with the award.

This season Jones is hitting .354 with 74 hits, 7 home runs, 33 RBIs, scored 35 runs and played in 48 games.

IL - Sunshine Tidings's Corsica Snaps Up Player of the Week: Frank Corsica burst onto the Institute League stage in a big way last week. This promising center fielder for Sunshine Tidings, originally acquired in a three-team trade in February, garnered everyone's respect by putting up some remarkable numbers and picking up the Player of the Week trophy.

The 26-year-old haunted opposing pitchers hitting .727 (8-for-11) with 1 home run and 1 RBIs last week.

Corsica is hitting .396 this season with 8 home runs, 34 RBIs and 44 runs scored. He has 84 hits in 212 at-bats.

ML - Star of the Week Named in ML: 16-year-old Aaron Erickson sent shock waves through Minutemen League last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the Minutemen League Player of the Week Award.

The 6th-round pick of the Treasures, Erickson made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .583 average, 7 hits in 12 at-bats, 1 home run and 6 RBI.

Where the Jamaica Plain Treasures shortstop goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Erickson certainly made his mark last week.

In the current season, Erickson has put up a .309 batting average with 64 hits, 8 home runs, 32 RBI and scored 47 runs.

RL - Player of the Week: Shaw HS's Ratican: It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Matt Ratican, the Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers 18-year-old first baseman, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for Railroad League Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 5 hits in 11 at-bats, compiling a .455 average with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs.

A look at his current stats shows Ratican with a .326 average, 10 home runs, 36 RBIs and 21 runs scored. He has played in 48 games.

21 June 2296 - No Settlement Story

We apologize, but we had to postpone our settlement story this week due to limited travel opportunities. We hope to bring you another story next week. Thank you for understanding.

2296 Week 16 - The Week in Review

The Institute League looks to be the only league competing for a division winner. The BL, ML, and RL are all but done unless Finch Farm, Warwick, and Oberland collapse. Oberland could clinch their division.

Wildcard races seem to be the true races. In the BL, 4 and maybe and outside chance at 5 (Nordhagen Beach) are competing for the wildcard. In the RL, Egret and Fairline Hill Estates are battling it out at the moment.

July 2296 - News and Notes - July 23-25

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

23 July 2296 - Shed Masters Salem in Complete Game Win

Julian Shed was locked and loaded, helping the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys beat the Salem Witch Hats, 8-1. The last-place Party Boys have won 4 consecutive games.

Shed earned the win to move to 4-3. In his complete-game performance, he allowed 1 run on 5 hits, striking out 4 and walking 1.

"Feels good to get the job done," Shed said after the game.

Tomas Jones continued the momentum he earned from a hot week that earned him Brotherhood League Player of the Week Honors. He spurred the Party Boys in offense, going 3 for 4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBI.

23 July 2296 - 5-for-5 Game for Inman

Fairline Hill Estates Yao Guai third baseman Grognak Inman really lit up the Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers with a 5-hit barrage today at Atomatoys Stadium -- a performance that sparked the Yao Guai to a 7-1 triumph.

He shrugged off the performance after the game, saying "sometimes the ball finds outfielders, today the ball found some holes."

Grognak Inman singled in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

This year Inman has batted at a .314 pace with 64 hits, 8 home runs, 43 RBIs and scored 34 times.

24 July 2296 - Synths Whipple Blanks Chemists

Lawdog Whipple of the Lexington Synths put on a dazzling performance at Vim! Park today. He shut out the Sunshine Tidings Chemists 6-0 on a well-pitched 5-hitter, ringing up 6 strikeouts and issuing no walks.

"I felt strong out there all day," Whipple said later.

In 17 starts this season Whipple has recorded a 7-4 record and a 4.74 ERA.

24 July 2296 - Tentsleep Stretches Hit String to 20

Nobody has been able to shut down The Slog Ghouls shortstop Lernz Tentsleep in recent days. The East Boston Prep Assaultrons fared no better than the rest.

Today at Easy Town Field, Tentsleep picked up 1 hit in 5 at-bats en route to a 12-6 Ghouls victory. It stretched his hitting string to 20 consecutive games.

Lernz Tentsleep struck out in the 2nd, walked in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th, hit a two-run single in the 6th, flied out in the 7th and grounded out in the 9th.

This season Tentsleep is batting .309 with 64 hits and 8 home runs. He has scored 47 times and has 40 RBI.

24 July 2296 - Castillo Gets 5 Hits

Thanks to Mike Castillo and his big bat, the Witch Hats derailed the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys 11-8 in 11 innings today at Red Rocket Stadium. The Salem center fielder had a standout game with 5 hits in 6 at-bats. Mike Castillo grounded out in the 1st, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit an RBI triple in the 7th, doubled in the 9th and singled in the 10th.

So far this season Castillo has gotten 77 hits in 224 at-bats for a .344 batting average with 1 home run. His stats include 33 RBIs and 48 runs scored. He has played in 50 games.

Salem trailed 8-1 heading into the 6th inning. The Witch Hats scored 4 runs in the 6th, 2 runs in the 7th, 1 run in the 9th, and 3 runs in the 11th.

Dustin Mart was the most outstanding player for the Party Boys. He was 4 for 5 with a grand slam, a run scored, and 4 RBI.

"It wasn't our day," Nordhagen Beach player-coach Dan Neofotistos said. He had a season-best 3 for 3 day with a double, 2 runs scored, and a walk. "Our pitching from top to bottom has to be able to hold off teams when we have a 7-run lead. It's that simple."

25 July 2296 - Carrotflower Keeps Hit Streak Alive

The hot bat of Bloodbugs second baseman Joel Carrotflower continues to churn out hit after hit, game after game. His consecutive-game hitting streak now numbers 20 games after he went 1-for-5 in today's 14-2 loss to the Four Leafs at Finch Family Park.

"I'm trying not to think about it much," he said later. "I don't want to mess with whatever zone I'm in."

Joel Carrotflower grounded out in the 1st, struck out in the 3rd, grounded out in the 6th, doubled in the 8th and flied out in the 9th.

Currently Carrotflower has no home runs and a .360 batting average.

25 July 2296 - Party Boys Edge Witch Hats, 7-6

The Salem Witch Hats got a superb performance from pinch hitter Scott Bregman, but the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys' Clux Oldstreet still won the game, 7-6.

Bregman was 1 for 1 with a grand slam in the 6th inning to give his team a 6-5 lead.

However, Nordhagen Beach took a 7-6 lead, which proved to be the final score, on Clux Oldstreet's 4th double of the season. The 2-run double, which Oldstreet hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Salem pitcher Josh Hugs shaking his head.

"I'm just happy to help the team win," Oldstreet told Publick Occurences. "Even if I come off the bench, I need to perform. Today, I felt like a demigod."

25 July 2296 - McMillen and Maskhelm Suspended 5 Games for Brawl

It was quite a row yesterday at Coolest Field in Town. The Cats Ray McMillen and the Hancocks Steve Maskhelm backed up their angry words with a few shoves and a few swings. Then both dugouts raced onto the field and got involved in the fracas. When it was over, only McMillen and Maskhelm were ejected.

As expected they were informed by the league office that they would each have to serve 5-game suspensions for their inappropriate actions.

Currently McMillen is hitting .376 and has collected 7 home runs, 43 RBIs and scored 44 times, while playing in 51 games.

Maskhelm has allowed 9 earned runs in 4.2 innings for a 17.36 ERA. He is 0-1.

25 July 2296 - Paladin Danse Drills 3 HR in One Game

Today was a special one for Paladin Danse of the Egret Scrappers as he slammed three home runs in the 19-12 win over the Diamond City Swatters.

"Lately, I've been uppercutting the ball too much," he said to Publick Occurrences after the game. "I would hit it hard, but they just went sky high and stayed in the ballpark. No big long outs for me in this game. I leveled out my swing and connected on the sweet spot. I knew they were gone the minute I hit 'em."

The Egret left fielder collected 3 hits in 5 at-bats, drove in 8, and scored 3 runs in the contest at The Great Green Jewel. His 3 home runs sets the Railroad League single-game record. The 8 RBI ties the record.

Paladin Danse walked in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, grounded out in the 4th, hit a three-run home run off Danny Owens in the 6th, hit a two-run home run off Matt Suds in the 7th and hit a three-run home run off Josh Samm in the 9th.

Batting .421 to date, Danse has 20 home runs and 64 RBIs.

There were two more records tied in the 19-12 game. Diamond City's Jeffrey Curatolo tied the RL record for times walked with 4. Egret's Jason Eisch tied the record for runs scored with 4.

Blink. Bat those eyes. 1. 2. There’s a voice. Who is that?

“Leo? Leo, can you hear me? I need you to open your eyes.”

I don’t know that voice. I don’t know . . . who I am. Oh, Atom, who am I? Who is Atom?

“Dammit, he’s not responding. Maybe the wipe didn’t work. Gina, get me the scalpel. I may need to cut him back open.”

I feel movement. I feel everything. I am alive. Open those eyes.

The scalpel moves towards the back of my neck. I can feel it, a slight hum. I lunge behind me and grab the wrist of the arm about to cut my neck. The man drops the scalpel and quickly pulls away. The man is frightened.

You will not touch me,” I shout. “Who are you? And what do you want?

“Leo, I am Doctor Stanley Carrington. I’m with the Railroad. We’re here to help you, Leo.”

Leo. I am Leo. Yes, that is right.

The doctor continues. He looks like a doctor, but he is dirty, his face and medical jacket covered in dirt and soot. But not his hands. The cotton skin, white and soft, scrubbed fresh in purified water. He is dirty but took care to clean his hands. For me. Leo.

“Leo, you had an accident in an attack. You were injured, but you are awake now. Do you understand? Do you . . . remember?”

Remember. A cliff? The coast. A storm forming and the wind blowing through. Her hair blowing, gold braids matching the storm-soaked, heightened waves. We are calm, walking towards an underground bunker. Radstorm coming, she says smiling. She is not worried, and I am not worried. She opens the door, and a neon flash of light pours through. She walks in first, and I follow. Emptiness. Room of white. I cannot remember more. What in Atom’s name?

Who is Atom?” I croak.

“Atom?” Doctor Carrington looks to the young lady also in a medical jacket. “Why, some people believe he’s the radiation god of the Wastelands. A crazy group that came all the way from D.C. worships him.”

Where’s D.C.?” I ask. My voice is deep baritone. Strong.

“Washington, D.C. The old capital of the United States of America. It’s all ruins out there. Took a direct hit on what used to be the President’s house. Nothing but rads and mutants that way. But, wait a minute. We didn’t . . .”

His voice trails off, like there is something he is not supposed to tell me. I feel anger building up in me, rage, aggression. Danger.

“What I meant to say is, um, you never mentioned knowing about Atom before. You knew me before the . . . accident. T-That’s why I’m surprised.”

Atom. D.C. President’s house. I don’t know why, but I can tell that I need to be there.

I stand from the dentist's chair I am lounged in. I feel strong, sure.

“Are you leaving already?” Carrington asks, glancing quickly at the girl. I notice she has a pistol holstered at her hip. Nervous.

Yes. I say or think. I look for an exit. I see the sign and walk towards the exit.

“You’re not ready yet,” he says, but does nothing to stop me. “Where are you going?”

I think I will go to see the President’s house,” I say. Armed guards let me know that they will see me out, help me navigate outside the city.

I walk south from a place called Lexington in a place the guards escorting me called the Switchboard. I walk and I walk and I walk. I never get tired.

I must find her. I must find Atom. I must find the President’s house. I am Leo. I feel reborn, alive. A phoenix risen. I feel like an elite warrior on a divine mission.

I walk. And I walk. And I walk.

It took a while for me to get caught up, but I'm there now. I'm the first to admit that everything I know about Fallout has come from one of your dynasties, but was a big fan of your original, and I'm enjoying the second too.

I feel like I need to officially throw my allegiance behind a team, and think it's time to commit to the Atom Cats. Any team that plays in the Coolest Field in town can't be too bad, or maybe they can? They can at least score runs though.

Hey old bean! I'm jazzed you join the sox hop! I'll try to serve you a little apple butter for those happening Cats.

And good timing on the Atom Cats since they played in one of the premier series of weekend. They will be partially featured soon through the eyes of Anne, Rex, and George. Anne has a liking for the number of flutter bums in and around the Garage.

Pull up a chair and come nerd out with the fallout, baby.

As an aside, my 50s vernacular is limited to a list of phrases on a website (er, intranet terminal), so I lack the pizzazz to tune in to their home-brand radio. Besides, they mostly reach themselves with some weaker signals coming in at Warwick, University Point, and Quincy. Therefore, they most certainly have not been anything more than a regional brand for Minutemen League fans who don't want to listen to one of the other leagues being broadcast that weekend.

About my offering you Fallout knowledge, don't rely too much on me! My storylines are way off canon, more like shooting out of a cannon.

DCR Week 17 Series Recap

The Confidence Man Minute with Travis Miles

This is a transcript from Travis Miles’ post-game sign off of Game Three of the DCR Series of the Week.

Hi, baseball fans in the Commonwealth. Playoff fever is taking over in the CBO, and we watched two teams battling it out this weekend for one of the CBO's eight spots in the playoffs. I am Travis Miles, and you are listening to "The Confidence Man Minute."

Tonight, we watched East Boston Prep take the game and the series as they defeat The Slog Ghouls 12 to 7 here are Easy Town Field. We had a high-scoring affair with at least one run scored in every inning of the game except the seventh.

Before we look at the stars of the game, we get to look at the big picture in the Brotherhood League heading into the final three regular season series. Both teams that we saw here are now 25 and 26 and tied for third place. With Salem's loss at Nordhagen Beach, both the Assaultrons and Ghouls trail by one game for second place. The Witch Hats look like they have the best chance to pull away some for the wildcard spot when they host reeling County Crossing, who is now tied for last place with the Party Boys at 22 and 29. The Assaultrons are at Nordhagen Beach, but the Party Boys are 6 and 4 in their last 10. The Slog has the toughest series by hosting first-place Finch Farm, which has a 33 and 18 record.

For our series this weekend, in Game One, Sean Samuels of the Assaultrons was the MVP and hero. Not only did he have a great game, going 3 for 5 with a home run, two runs scored, three runs batted in, and a walk, but he also hit the game-winning hit, an RBI, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to win the game for EBP, 7 to 6.

Game Two belonged to the Ghouls, their only win. Po Greenzone was the top player of the game, going 2 for 2 with two home runs, four walks, three runs scored, and five runs batted in.

In Game Three, Assaultrons shortstop Matt Stoops was the star of the game. He was 3 for 3 with one of EBP's eight team doubles, four runs scored, two runs batted in, and a walk. He also had a sacrifice fly.

We made a trade for first choice in broadcast next weekend, which will affect the playoff broadcasts some. For now, we await WRVR's announcement for next weekend. Spoiler alert: Starlight and Abernathy are tied for first place in the Institute League, and they play next weekend. I am sure I can guess what WRVR wanted. We saw those two teams face off last weekend.

Anyway, that will do it for this week's "The Confidence Man Minute with Travis Miles." Be sure you tune in tomorrow morning where I have my weekly baseball show, and there we will officially announce where we'll head next week. Have a good night, don't let the rad bugs bite.

WRVR Week 17 Series Recap

The Radioactive Gland with Anne, Rex, and George

A: We are the Charles River Trio, the coolest cats of radio in all of the Commonwealth, and we are here at the Coolest Field in Town broadcasting our weekly series postgame show, "The Radioactive Gland." Hi, everyone, I am Anne. With me as always are Rexie-poo and that cat George.

You have just listened to the most exciting game you will hear on the radio waves, where the home Atom Cats rallied back for a 19-18 win over the Goodneighbor Hancocks. It is way past my pumpkin carriage time here on a hot Saturday night, but, Rex and George, tell us something we already know.

R: Anne, we know that baseball matches rarely reach wretches of wrought raucousness.

G: This was not a baseball game. It was a swatter death match! At least Moe Cronin would say so.

A: And I say everyone here is riled up but really tired.

R: Restless, even. Well, Anne. I understand your hints. Too bad there is no Bottoms Up award for this week. Well, let's see. I do believe that we failed to mention that the Atom Cats won two of three games in the series, including tonight's rope cutter.

Now, I will speed past my balderdash and nominate the Sportiest Sport. Since George politely reminded me that his player was also my own--potential spoiler alert--I went in a different direction. Then Anne pointed out something, and so we had a quandary of sort. Ultimately, Anne graciously succumbed to the power or persuasion and left me with this person as the Sportiest Sport: Goodneighbor's John Rose. He undoubtedly could be named our Outstanding Player of the Week, and he may find himself honored as the Minutemen League Player of the Week. However, for now he is the Sportiest Sport for an outstanding but losing effort. In a loss for the Hancocks on Thursday, Rose was 2 for 3 with a double, a home run, a walk, three runs scored, and one run batted in. He followed up that performance with Player of the Game honors tonight, despite the loss. He was 3 for 4 with a home run, two walks, five runs scored, and three runs batted in. A Rose by any other name would still be the Sportiest Sport.

G: Well, Rex, you did spoil it a bit that the Top Pitcher this week is also a player from Goodneighbor, but he deserves it. To me, that player has to be the Hancocks' Quincy Eloquent. Yesterday, he pitched nearly a complete game, allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 8 and 2/3 innings to earn the victory in a 5-3 ball game. On top of that, he admirably fulfilled his role as player-coach for his team, despite the heartbreaking loss tonight.

A: Thank you, my tight slodges! I will now name the Outstanding Player of the Week. This Cat was not as good as Rose, like you said, Rex. However, he still sparked his team in two of their wins. He is third baseman Shane "Bee's Knees" Stabb. In three games, he totaled a 4 for 11 performance with a double, two home runs, four walks, eight runs scored, and six RBIs. Great job, Knees Stabb.

That will finish up "The Radioactive Gland." We will now announce where we are going next week since it is already a late night, and we hope that we can pass on that information again tomorrow morning even if we have no show to broadcast. So, finger snaps, our destination next week where we have the first choice of games is the battle for first place in Abernathy when the Starlight Lady Killers visit the Abernathy Adamantium. This one is high stakes, folks! So tune in next week for Institute League action!

Well, it is late, like I said, with a late game lasting over four hours. I want to thank the Atom Cats and the coolest slang in the Commonwealth. I absolutely love the greaser jacket you gave me. Let's get out of Atom with the Five Stars' "Atom Bomb Baby": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEKdt2y1-Mc

2296 Players of the Week - Week 17

BL - BL Premier Player Picked: Po Greenzone demonstrated his potential to be a star in the game last week and today he took home the Brotherhood League Player of the Week Award.

The Slog's left fielder wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers last week, pounding them for a .556 average (5-for-9) with 4 home runs and 10 RBIs on his way to claiming the honor.

On the year Greenzone is hitting .343 with 57 hits, 20 home runs, 56 RBIs, .420 OBP and has scored 45 runs.

IL - Player of the Week Goes to Lexington Pitcher: Lawdog Whipple is capable of a great game every time he takes the hill and last week the Lexington Synths hurler proved that point with gusto to become the newest Institute League Player of the Week.

He picked up 1 win and no losses and rang up 6 strikeouts in 9 innings to finish with a splendid 0.00 ERA.

Whipple has made 17 starts this season, posting 7 wins and 4 losses. Opposing clubs are batting .324 against him and he has 79 strikeouts in 117.2 innings with a 4.74 ERA.

ML - ML Honors Goodneighbor Center Fielder: 26-year-old John Rose made a few Goodneighbor headlines during this past week as the rookie center fielder proved he could compete at the plate with anyone. He captured the attention of fans, journalists and Minutemen League officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.

He cracked 7 hits in 12 at-bats to put up a .583 average. Rose collected 2 home runs, 5 RBIs and scored 8 runs.

Looking at his stats this year, Rose has compiled a .300 batting average, while hitting 12 home runs and driving in 55 runs. He has played in 51 games and scored 37 runs.

RL - Inman Honored by Railroad League: 27-year-old Grognak Inman sent shock waves through Railroad League last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the Railroad League Player of the Week Award.

The Yao Guai's 9th-round pick, Inman made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .647 average, 11 hits in 17 at-bats, 1 home run and 6 runs batted in.

Where the Fairline Hill Estates Yao Guai third baseman goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Inman certainly made his mark last week.

Thus far this year Inman has hit .324 with 9 home runs and 47 RBIs.

Settlements Today

by Nat Wright-Kowalski

28 July 2296 - Starlight Drive-In

Each Tuesday for the upcoming weeks through the playoffs, we will feature one of the settlements, teams, and owners of the Commonwealth Baseball Organization. This is meant to tell you more about life in the Commonwealth, as well as give you more information about the teams and their owners.

In our fifteenth installment of "Settlements Today," I visited the settlement with the best entertainment feature, Starlight Drive-In, the settlement with a movie screen as its left field wall for its baseball stadium.

Starlight Drive-In, 2287. The view of this picture is now approximately the pitcher's mound of Valentine Detective Agency Field.

When Nate Howard first came across Starlight Drive-In, it was abandoned and inhabited by molerats. From the initial terminal information, "As the name implies, this location is a drive-in movie theater with a large three-story screen and a parking lot filled with the rusted hulls of destroyed cars. There are three major structures: the screen, the shack that houses the workshop, and the diner attached to the projector tower.

"In the middle of the lot is a large water-filled crater containing a number of extremely radioactive barrels; however, removing the barrels through the workshop will stop the severe radiation. Once this has been done, the area will no longer be radioactive, although the water will still cause radiation damage if consumed.

"The diner is booby trapped in two places; a booby trap on the door detonates when opened, avoided by entering from the second floor via the collapsed roof and disarming it. The other booby trap is an active bottlecap mine set in the left-hand window, which can prove lethal.

"The top of the screen is accessible by way of the stairs inside the screen, though there are armed land mines on the landings. A handful of locked rooms behind the screen contains useful supplies and building materials, and can also be used to shelter beds for settlers prior to constructing more centrally-located housing."

Nate easily dispatched the molerats and took control of the workbench at Starlight. He cleaned up the "pond" by removing the nuclear waste barrels and built a water purification system there. He put out a call to settlers with a radio frequency and got to work on exterior turret systems. Newcomers then started planting gardens to raise food. A settlement was begun.

In time, Nate returned to the settlement and helped the settlers there convert the old film house into the start of living quarters. From late 2286 until 2290, the settlement grew exponentially, with settlers fixing the movie projector and finding a few old movie reels. They also cleared out the parking space that eventually became Valentine Detective Agency Field, using the movie screen as its left field wall. Nate has plans to use the BosCom technology to make the left field wall a video and highlights screen.

Now, Starlight Drive-In has the largest building as a living area in all of the Commonwealth, bigger even than the Great Green Jewel was when it was old Diamond City. The building is called "The Compound" and settlers can watch baseball and movies from an elevated advantage. There are some field-level bleachers available also, but most settlers prefer to watch the game from their front "porch."

Owner - Irish Cait

Cait, all Irish and stuff. How it possible to have an Irish accent in a post-apocalyptic Boston with no overseas travel? Who knows?

Cait has a long history. Based on the terminal entries about her, her past looks like this:

"Cait was born into a distant and abusive family of Irish descent in 2261, her parents would routinely beat and yell at her. She attempted to run away twice, the first time she did it, they locked her in a shed outside of the house they lived in. The second time, they broke one of her legs. Cait eventually became convinced she was a mistake, due to the constant abuse, but deluded herself into thinking that they loved her enough not to kick her out of the house. The illusion was shattered once her eighteenth birthday came: They had slapped a shock collar around her neck and sold her into slavery, all without a hint of regret.

"For the next five years, Cait was used as an entertainment slave, for a variety of purposes she refuses to detail. While it wrecked her emotionally and warped her personality, Cait developed significant resentment towards them and eventually learned some tricks of their trade. Stealing caps from sleeping men after they used her, she eventually managed to buy her freedom. With 23 years worth of pent-up fury, she tracked down her parents and gunned them down in bloody vengeance.

"After everything was said and done, Cait took to alcohol and chems to help forget her past. She joined the Combat Zone as a cage fighter and fought to provide her with the funds to buy everything she needed to forget. The point of the fighting wasn't just to provide her with funds, though. She hated everyone, herself the most, and the violence - and pain, and wounds, and the Psycho - were ways to punish herself and find death. Unfortunately, Cait proved too tough to beat, even when raiders took the joint over and it got decidedly more lethal. Those who didn't keep their head on a swivel were liable to be sucker-punched and robbed in the best of circumstances. Cait herself learned that, short of buying friends, she's a victim waiting to be preyed upon. The teacher of that vital lesson was a raider named Stratton, who dumped her to be beaten up by raiders the moment she stopped having sex with him.

"By the time the [Nate] comes, Cait has been a cage fighter for three years, two of them under raider management - all with a hundred victories to her name. As the Sole Survivor enters the Combat Zone and defeats the raiders, Tommy Lonegan offers [Nate] Cait's contract because of her self-destructive reliance on Psycho."

Nate helped Cait break that habit by finding old Vault-Tec technology in a Gunner hotspot, Vault 95. They then became friends and Cait helped Nate rid the Wasteland of all the Gunners and other raiders she could find, one angry bullet at a time.

Today, Cait relaxes in her own haven at Starlight Drive-In. Nate often comes to visit, so they reminisce on the good and not-so-good times. Nate will catch baseball games at the Drive-In whenever business or other responsibilities do not keep him away.

The Best Damn Detective Agency in the Commonwealth

Nick Valentine at his Valentine Detective Agency desk

Pre-war, Nick Valentine was a human detective for Boston. After the Eddie Winter fiasco, he agreed to a psychological study where he uploaded his consciousness and memories at the Commonwaelth Institute of Technology.

Post-war, he emerged as a synth prototype thanks to the Institute using the CIT's old technology.

According to the intranet, "An unusual robotic detective, Nick Valentine is the sole detective of a small agency he runs in Diamond City alongside his assistant Ellie Perkins. In addition to possessing the memories of a late pre-War detective, Nick has certain abilities that complement his investigative skills: he is very effective at hacking computers, and adept at both ranged and melee combat. Valentine believes himself to be a prototype between second-generation synths and the latest, which might explain why he exhibits sapient intelligence and is not innately hostile towards non-Institute humans. He is generally well respected throughout Diamond City despite his mysterious origins.

"Although Diamond City holds no small amount of hatred for the Institute and their synths, Nick gained their respect by saving the daughter of the city's former mayor, Henry Roberts, when she ran away with a caravan trader. The caravan trader and his companions were, unbeknownst to the girl, actually kidnappers who proceeded to take her hostage. Nick stumbled upon the kidnappers purely by accident when he was wandering the Commonwealth wasteland, having been almost exclusively itinerant since his "awakening." Finding himself held at gunpoint and likely the girl's only hope, Nick scared the abductors away by claiming that he had a bomb inside him and beeping (Nick claims that he literally just said the word "beep" repeatedly).

"When the Mayor's daughter told Nick what had happened, he returned her to her father, who in turn gave him a house in Diamond City as compensation despite the citizens' dismay and objections; Nick gradually eased the citizens' fears by acting as Diamond City's handyman. His formidable detective skills were brought to the forefront when he helped to find a wife who was thought dead: Nick discovered that she had in actuality run away with her lover. In time, people stopped asking Nick to fix things when it became clear that he had found his true calling as Diamond City's private investigator."

A Nick Valentine case file - coming soon to a dynasty near you!

The Valentine Detective Agency is highly successful. Nick and Ellie Perkins still run the joint, though the offices have moved out of the Great Green Jewel and into the new Diamond City, areas surrounding the baseball stadium. They stay busy and the cases of missing and dead people keep piling up.

28 June 2296 - Case of Swamp Ass Affects Oberland Player

Oberland T-51s backup catcher Toad Harris has never liked to bathe. When he was younger, he was named Todd Harris. However, since he refused to take baths for most of his youth, his father started calling him Toad. That name has stuck, as well as his bathing habits, or lack thereof.

Now, the 30-year-old will have to miss some time due to a bad case of swamp ass. Swamp ass is characterized by a rash on the backside due to excessive sweating, as well as being typically unclean in the bottom areas, like a baby with a dirty diaper.

Harris will be out for the rest of the regular season while he is sent to Vault 81 to try to rid himself of the rash and the infections associated with it, and to ensure there is no blood-poisoning from the bacteria there. Perhaps Dr. Jacob Forsythe can also inject him with some sort of anti-filth anecdote to convince him that daily baths or showers, especially after leaving the baseball field, is a good thing.

One the season, Harris has appeared in just seven games, all as a backup. In seven plate appearances, he has gone 2 for 7 with a double, a run scored, two runs batted in, and two strikeouts. He has a .286 average. Harris has been the third catcher for most of the season, serving mostly as the main bullpen catcher.

The T-51s, 36-15, can clinch the division title on Thursday with a win at Diamond City and an Egret loss to Fairline Hill Estates. Should Oberland lose and the Yao Guai lose, the T-51s will clinch a playoff spot.

30 July 2296 - G.E.C.K. Sent to Howard from Capital Wasteland

Nate Howard received an interesting anonymous gift this morning via a courier from the Capital Wasteland, the name for the former Washington, D.C. area of the United States.

Howard was sent a Garden of Eden Creation Kit, also known as a G.E.C.K. from pre-War technology. We do not have much information other than a terminal log and information sent with the G.E.C.K. Howard received.

According to the terminal entry we found from a Vault-Tec facility, a G.E.C.K. is "a terraforming device created by Future-Tec, a division of Vault-Tec Corporation, to ease the process of harnessing the post-nuclear wasteland for vault dwellers." It was supposedly created by a Vault-Tec scientist named Doctor Stanislaus Braun. We will try to dig for more information if we can find any or send someone to the Capital Wasteland to try to find out more.

Howard told us that he was going to work with the Institute in analyzing the device and seeing if that technology could be duplicated. He also suggested that he suspected who might have sent the device, though he could not be sure.

According to Howard through a press release: "The G.E.C.K. I received had a note and instructions attached to it. The note said, 'To the S.S. Can't have baseball on all dirt fields. You need a little green in your life. Reverse engineer this, make it SMALL, and then you have the prettiest fields in the land. Good for farming, too. Signed, L.W'"

Howard believes the Institute has the best ability to reverse engineer the G.E.C.K. to form miniature G.E.C.K.s. According to Howard, all 24 baseball fields could then have a plant called grass on them that would make the fields look nicer and make for better baseball.

We at Publick Occurences will update you if there is any progress on the G.E.C.K. front, but the idea of a green baseball field seems foreign yet exciting to us.

30 July 2296 - 4-2 Assaultrons Win over Party Boys Evens Season Record

The East Boston Prep Assaultrons got a good effort from starter Angel Waterdrink in defeating the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys at Red Rocket Stadium. The final score was 4-2. With the win, East Boston Prep pushed its record to 26-26.

It could have been a different outcome for East Boston Prep, had it not been for Dan Squirrel, the 18-year old right fielder. Squirrel contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put East Boston Prep up, 3-2.

"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Squirrel. "And not try to do too much."

30 July 2296 - Seaweed Stars for Treasures in 9-6 Win

The 9-6 Jamaica Plain win over Atom was due in large part to David Seaweed. The Treasures right fielder went 4 for 5 with a home run and 2 doubles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. The Treasures raised their record to 16-36.

Aaron Erickson, who is tied for 9th in the in runs scored with 50, chipped in for Jamaica Plain with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. For the game, the shortstop had 3 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 2 singles, 1 run scored, and 4 RBI.

"Nice to tuck this win away," said Seaweed.

31 July 2296 - Cartrette at His Best, Blanks County Crossing

Mike Cartrette put on a razor-sharp performance for the Salem Witch Hats against the County Crossing Bloodbugs at The Coven of Salem today. Cartrette fashioned a fine 5-hitter, blanking them 5-0 and chalking up 5 strikeouts and 2 walks.

In season stats Cartrette shows a 4-3 record in 12 games, 74 innings, 54 strikeouts and a 5.23 ERA.

31 July 2296 - Alone Powers Cats Offense

The Atom Cats beat the Jamaica Plain Treasures, 10-6, at The Treasure Box. Atom right fielder Travis Alone had an outstanding performance. He went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and 2 walks. He scored 3 times and drove in 2. Atom raised its record to 31-22 with the win.

The result might have been different, had it not been for Ed Tarberry, the Atom center fielder. Tarberry had a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Cats ahead, 7-6. For the game, Tarberry had 1 double and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

"I just tried to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Alone.

With the win, the Cats also prevented Warwick from clinching the division crown. The Mirelurks currently have a seven-game lead over Atom with seven to play.

31 July 2296 - Assaultrons Lose By a Run at Nordhagen Beach, 5-4

The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys defeated the East Boston Prep Assaultrons, 5-4. Doing his part was catcher Dan Neofotistos, who was 2-3 with 2 doubles and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Nordhagen Beach starter Tommy Beach was credited with the win after throwing 100 pitches over 8 innings. His record now stands at 3-3. Earning his 4th save of the year was Sia Abber.

With Nordhagen Beach leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Neofotistos hit a curveball from David Tech for a 2-run double. It was his 4th double of the season and put the Party Boys ahead, 3-0.

"We'll kick back tonight, then get set for the next one," Neofotistos said.

Nordhagen Beach is now 23-30, East Boston Prep 26-27.

31 July 2296 - Estate Dominates Finch Farm in 16-0 Whitewash

It wasn't easy but Gary Estate made it look that way.

Estate silenced the Finch Farm Four Leafs, 16-0, in a The Slog Ghouls triumph at Tarberry Field Forever today. Despite the appearance of dominance, Estate said later that he felt like he was struggling all game. He gave up 4 walks and 3 hits.

"It didn't feel quite right today, but I made the decision to bear down and work through it," he said. "I made a few mistakes but it goes to show what you can do with grit and not much else."

Currently Estate has a 8-5 won-lost record in 16 starts with a 5.10 ERA. He also has 57 strikeouts in 97 innings.

1 August 2296 - Tentsleep Hit String Snapped at 23

After 23 games, The Slog shortstop Lernz Tentsleep saw his hitting streak end when he went hitless in 2 at-bats. However, the Ghouls still managed to take the win, topping the Finch Farm Four Leafs 4-2 at Tarberry Field Forever.

"It was a good run," Tentsleep said after the game. "It was bound to end at some point. I'm just glad we won the day it ended."

In 51 games this year Tentsleep has posted a .309 average and put up these numbers: 9 home runs, 44 RBIs and 52 runs scored.

1 August 2296 - Mart Helps Nordhagen Beach Outscore East Boston Prep

The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys defeated the East Boston Prep Assaultrons, 15-10, at Red Rocket Stadium today. Leading the charge for Nordhagen Beach was first baseman Dustin Mart. He went 3-5 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Casey Diehl was the winner. Over 6.2 innings, he allowed 7 runs on 12 hits, with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts. Nordhagen Beach now sits in 5th place in the Brotherhood League at 24-30.

In the first inning of the game, Mart had a 3-run home run for Nordhagen Beach. It was his 9th home run of the season and put the Party Boys on top, 4-1.

"Feels good to get the job done," Mart said after the game.

1 August 2296 - Cats Suffer 14-1 Drubbing

The home crowd had a good time watching the Atom Cats and Jamaica Plain Treasures get after it.

The Jamaica Plain Treasures cruised to a win over the Atom Cats, 14-1, at The Treasure Box. David Seaweed led the way, going 2-for-6 for Jamaica Plain. The Treasures raised their record to 17-37.

Early in the game, Seaweed had a run-scoring double for Jamaica Plain. It was his 20th double of the season and put the Treasures on top, 1-0.

"We got handed a ball of yarn and sent far away," said Atom owner Zeke.

With the afternoon loss by the Cats, Warwick has clinched the Minutemen League title by default. With six games to play for the Cats, they are 7.5 out of first place.

1 August 2296 - Oberland, Warwick Clinch League Crowns

The Oberland T-51s and Warwick Mirelurks may not be playing their best baseball right now, but the two teams have clinched their leagues and will be guaranteed a home series in the first-round of the CBO playoffs.

The Mirelurks clinched the Minutemen League earlier in the day when the second-place Atom Cats fell 14-1 at the hands of last-place Jamaica Plain. Warwick also lost its game today, but at 38-16 with six games to play, the Mirelurks hold a seven-game lead over the Cats, who are 31-23.

Atom could clinch the wildcard spot on Thursday in the ML with a win over University point and losses by Goodneighbor and Quincy. Both the Hancocks and Gunners are tied for third place at 26-28, five games behind the Cats.

Oberland clinched the Railroad League thanks to their 9-5 win at Diamond City tonight. Though the Egret Scrappers gained a game on the T-51s this weekend, the gap was too wide. The T-51s are now 38-16, while the Scrappers are 31-23.

Like Atom, the Scrappers could clinch the wildcard next weekend, though they will need at least two games to do it. Egret swept the Fairline Hill Estates Yao Guai to increase their wildcard lead from one game to four. The Yao Guai sit in third place at 27-27.

In the Brotherhood League, Finch Farm had a chance to clinch their division crown, but they were swept by The Slog Ghouls who moved up to second place. At 33-21, the Four Leafs still have a five-game advantage over the 28-26 Ghouls with six to play. That means, the Four Leafs could clinch their division, or at least a share of it, on Thursday. Salem and East Boston Prep trail the Ghouls by one and two games, respectively for the wildcard spot.

This year Rogers is batting .303 with 15 home runs and 45 RBIs.

IL - Engill Takes IL's Best Bat Trophy: For the #1 overall pick, Austin Engill certainly lived up to expectations this month. It was good enough to win the IL Batter of the Month award for July.

The 18-year-old shortstop for the Abernathy Adamantium hit .431 with 1 home run, 17 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Thus far this year Engill is batting .375 with 10 home runs, 52 RBIs and 73 runs scored.

This season Rose is hitting .317 with 14 home runs.

RL - RL Honors Perez, #1 Batter in July: Oberland T-51s fans believe they've got a talented young star in B.J. Perez.

He did nothing to dissuade that notion in July, as he hit .492 with 2 home runs, 9 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

The end result was the center fielder being named the Railroad League Batter of the Month.

So far in 2296 Perez is batting .453 with 6 home runs, 44 RBIs and 60 runs scored. He has 105 hits in 232 at-bats and a .511 OBP.

1 August 2296 - Pitchers of the Month

BL - Breakball Named Top BL Hurler: Matt Breakball is at the zenith of his career and today he was selected as the Brotherhood League Pitcher of the Month for July.

He made 6 relief appearances for Salem last month, throwing 9 innings and collecting 1 save, a 3-0 record, 11 strikeouts and a 1.00 ERA.

This year Breakball has 11 saves. In 24 relief appearances he has tossed 26 innings, fanned 30 and given up 12 walks with a 4-2 record. The Salem reliever has recorded a 4.50 ERA and allowed the opposition to hit .255 when he is on the mound.

IL - Hooker Nets IL #1 Pitcher Award: Brent Hooker took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Institute League Pitcher of the Month award for July.

DCR Week 18 Series Recap

The Confidence Man Minute with Travis Miles

This is a transcript from Travis Miles’ post-game sign off of Game Three of the DCR Series of the Week.

Hello, baseball fans! From Fallon Field at Egret Tours Marina, this is Travis Miles with "The Confidence Man Minute." We watched Railroad League action today in the southwest quadrant as the home-team Egret Scrappers won 7-4 this afternoon and completed the sweep over the Fairline Hill Estates Yao Guai in the battle for second place.

With the sweep, the Scrappers are now four games up on the Yao Guai for the wildcard spot with six to play. Should Oberland win tonight, then the T-51s will clinch the division, so this sweep was highly important for Egret.

The Yao Guai is going to have to regret their performance this weekend because they seemed to be in position to be the team in second place if they could manage a road sweep, but being swept almost guarantees the spot for Egret.

Looking at some of our stars of the weekend, Bill Chaney was the Player of the Game in Game 1 when the Scrappers won 7-3. Chaney was 2 for 4 with a double and a grand slam in the 8th inning that broke a 3-3 tie. He scored twice, knocked in four, and walked once.

Crops Gerdenheimer got the top player award in Game 2. The Scrappers won that one 12-5 thanks to Gerdenheimer's offense. He was 3 for 5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored, and five RBIs. Egret also got a complete game from Nick Poppa, earning his ninth win of the season.

Not to be outdone, Gerdenheimer was also today's most valuable player, and he has a good chance to be the R-L Player of the Week. Today, he was 3 for 4 with two home runs, two runs scored, and four runs batted in.

Next week, we have first choice. Of course, we will watch what happens the rest of today, but we already know where we are going next week, so let me announce it right now. Next week in at Starlight Drive-In, Piper Wright and the BosCom crew are hooking up a closed-circuit camera to the movie projector. Therefore, in what is a tight playoff race, we are planning to watch the Sunshine Tidings Chemists take on the Lady Killers.

Right now, the Chemists lead Fort Hagen 9-8 in the top of the ninth. If the Chemists win, they will move to 28-26, which will put them two-and-a-half games behind Starlight for the wildcard. The Lady Killers have lost their first two games of the series so far at Abernathy, which currently puts them two games back at 30-23.

Ok, folks. It may not have been a competitive series this weekend, but at least we know now what the Railroad League picture looks like. See you on the big screen next week, CBO, if you're there. This is Travis Miles, and I am out of here!

WRVR Week 18 Series Recap

1 August 2296 – The Glass Pitcher with Rex, George, and Anne

R: Greetings from a beautiful, clear afternoon. I am Rex Goodman, the goodest man on the radio waves, and the proprietor and patronion of the Charles River Trio. With my good hosts and friends George and Anne, you are listening to “The Glass Pitcher.” I still think we should be called “The Glass Menagerie,” but that would just be breaking the fourth wall, now wouldn’t it?

From Abernathy Farm at the field named after a hybrid vegetable-fruit, we watched this afternoon as Starlight avoided a sweep versus the Adamantium. Today’s score was 8-1. However, Abernathy wins the series two games to one with 11-8 and 5-2 wins on Thursday and Friday. The Adamntium are now up by one game on the Lady Killers with a 32-22 record.

G: Neither team has yet to clinch a playoff spot, so this was an important series for both teams. We know Sunshine Tidings won earlier today, so that means the playoff race in the Institute League is still tight.

A: Tighter than Glenn Higinbotham’s ***.

R: My word, Anne.

A: I’m just being honest here.

R: And honest you are. Well, George, can you give us a top pitcher for the week?

G: I can, Rex. And this week it’s an easy choice. In Game Two, Abernathy’s Joe Penaltybox had a great game in giving up only two earned runs. However, today’s 8-1 win by the Lady Killers was all due to their excellent pitching. The Lady Killers’ Enrique Rodriguez improved his record to 5-3 when he pitched eight and one-third innings of shutout ball. He allowed five hits, walked one, and struck out four in the game, so Rodriguez is our Pitcher of the Week.

A: For the Bottoms Up Award, I would love to nominate Higinbotham for his most excellent of bottoms, but I still need to stick with the heart of this award. So, let’s stay in Game Two which had the latest lead change in the series. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Adamantium were trailing 2-1. That was when first baseman Steve Settle came on with two men on and hit a three-run home run. That made the game 4-2, and the Adamantium went on to win the game.

R: Thank you dearly, both. The Most Outstanding Player of the Week is also from the team that lost the series this weekend. Starlight first baseman Willie Qesadena had a good weekend with at least one extra-base hit in every game. He was 7 for 12 with four doubles, two runs, three runs batted in, and a walk.

We are now going to wrap up “The Glass Pitcher.” As usual, we will announce officially on Sunday where we will be next weekend. Until then, we hope you have enjoyed our broadcast from Tato Field.

To your health, to your safety, I bid you adieu. Let us listen to the beautiful voice of Marjorie Hughes singing with her father’s band, Frankie Carle and His Orchestra. Here’s to “One More Tomorrow”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFnJg__e6iI
