Woodcut Located Fleury Sullivan 1884 Pittsburgh Alleghenys

I found a woodcut of Fleury Sullivan in the May 3, 1885 Kansas City Times.

Photo Located Samuel "Doc" Landis 1882 Baltimore Orioles / Philadelphia Athletics

I've located a photo that is almost certainly Doc Landis of the 1882 American Association loss leader.

His picture appeared in one of the SABR Virtual panels I watched recently and I contacted the presenter. He indicated that he found the photo on Ancestry.

The photo features Landis with the 1886 Port Henry, NY team. I found a box score of a Landis pitching for the squad in July 1886, and since the upstate New York and Vermont circuit was filled with Philadelphia pros and semi-pros, I am quite certain that it is Landis. He was let go from Providence in the Eastern League when the club folded in early June 1886, so circumstantially it fits.

Photo Located Martin Flaherty 1881 Worcestor National League

One of the Providence papers was just added to Genealogy Bank and I was able to located a photo of Martin Flaherty, of the 1881 Worcester National League club. His photo was pictured with his obituary in the June 11, 1920 edition of the Providence Evening Bulletin.

With this image, by my account, we now have images for every player who appeared in the 1881 National League season.

Thank you for the great missing player finds! I offer one minor correction to the bolded portion of your ending comment above: We have images for every player who debuted in 1881. Jack Leary, who debuted in 1880 and played three games for the 1881 Detroit Wolverines, remains missing. With Flaherty now located (again, thank you very much), when Leary is found, then we will have images for every player who appeared in 1881.

Thanks for the correction. Leary is among my most wanted players. I noticed in your spreadsheet that there is a note about Leary: "Possible image: Leary, John J. 'Jack' 1880-84 Can't ID (capless) c. 1884"

Do you know where this image is located?

Upon review, I've removed the note; the image in question actually showed Jim Toy with the 1886 Utica Pent-Ups. Leary has been one of my top targets as well. He's quite elusive!

Al Kvasnak 1942

Clearer Facepack option for Kvasnak, who played in only 5 major league games. He had a lengthy minor league career.

Al Kvasnak 1942

Here's another option, showing Kvasnak in his Chattanooga Lookouts uniform. The photo was obtained from the Engel Stadium Base Ball Society years ago.

Al Kvasnak in his rookie debut against the Yankees from the 1942 Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, NY. Not a great face pic but does show him in a Senator uniform getting his 1st major league hit.

Larry Murphy and Clarence Murphy

I was perusing the missing players list and came across an interesting thing. Clarence Murphy, a player (and missing player) for whom almost nothing is known, was the starting CF for the 1887 St. Paul Saints and then seemingly dropped off the face of the earth. He had contributed 205 hits and stole 80 bases while batting .350. The following season CF was occupied by 31 year old Larry Murphy, who didn't hit as well but contributed 94 stolen bases. He has no record of playing professionally before that, at least on Baseball-Reference. I'm curious if they are the same person?

According to the mini-bio in the 11-Mar-1888 St. Paul Daily Globe, the to St. Paul Murphys appear to be the same player. That said, the birth data does not match up to major leaguer Larry Murphy, who has the St. Paul stats included in his playing record. According to the Globe, the St. Paul player was born in Indianapolis in 1861. B-R lists Murphy's birth date as 1857, and his hometown as Toronto.

Further tracing the career arc listed in the Globe, B-R's minimal roster listing does not include a Murphy with the 1884 Evansville club, and the Murphy who played for Birmingham and Nashville in 1885 is listed as John.

EDITED TO ADD: The 1886 Minneapolis Murphy is only listed by his last name, with no linkage to other years or teams.

That's more of a mystery than I have time to run down this morning, but I'll try to dig in again this evening.

Clarence Murphy is a placeholder name for a one gamer who appeared for Louisville in Cincinnati. There is no evidence the player's first name was Clarence. One theory is that the player was Joe Murphy, a St. Louis semipro pitcher who was on trial with Cincinnati at the time and he was used as a last minute fill-in for Louisville. I am skeptical since one note in the Cincy papers mentioned that Murphy had returned to St. Louis on the eve of the game. I doubt that the mystery Murphy is one of the Minnesota players either.

Jay Pettibone 1983

For most of the 1980s, the Twins had real trouble developing starting pitchers. Jay Pettibone was a 6'4" right-hander out of Mount Clemens Michigan. The Rangers drafted him but released him in 1981 after undistinguished seasons in Rookie and Class A ball. The Twins signed him and he showed some improvement first in A and then in AA in the Minnesota chain. He had an OK 1983 split between AA and AAA, and that was enough for the Twins to take a look at him in the bigs. He went 0-4, 5.33 in four starts, one of them a no-doubt-heartbreaking complete game loss. In 1984 Jay got the whey beaten out of him back in the minors (4-12) so the Twins sent him to the Cards as part of the payment for Chris Speier. He has proved to be quite a difficult find in a major league uniform, but here he is at last.
