I can't speak for how it happens exactly, but what I know from practice is that:
1) Congested schedule alone will lead to suboptimal rest (even on 6man rotation).
2) Pitchers can get stuck and exhaust, guaranteeing they won't recover fully on usual rotation.
3) Shorter bullpen for 6-man, so RPs can get destroyed if you put pitch count in for SP. If you don't they will need to put work in and exhaust as a result.
4) By better performance I meant less time spent performing tired. Usual rotation has significant amount of time with 2-3 guys being tired. Properly managed 6-man will prevent it.
