how old at start of 10-year? if he's mid-20's it's no big deal. still time to get rid of him before veto power.
had him from start? so, 10/5 rule will be a problem? nothing you can do but hope for the best and a comp pick. that's not an outcome i prefer. too often i hear, there's nothing i/we could do etc.. RL and baseball game.. watching the lions financial mismanagement under mayhew and "he who shall not be named" was a %#@ing circus attraction. (hope he who shallt not be named has multiple problems due to steroids and emphatymines he loaded up on while playing in extreme excess.. the guy foamed at the mouth on the field, lol) you can usually identify the guys that will sign older and have too long of a contract. gotta bite that bullet earlier and avoid it before ~10 years in league. i'm happy getting ~7-9 years out of a player in that situation and getting a hefty return in prospect(s). freedom to do that is a constantly good team. 1 player leaving is never a problem. i've let SP go that sound like what you are talking about.. some are successful until ~37+, but since you can't predict that the risk of a total dud on bench, or worse dead money, is tremendously catostrophic in comparison. |

I had a somewhat similar situation in my league. Well, the main exception is my catcher was a great player but I traded for him and he was looking for an extension after the worst season of his career in Year 1 with me. However, he was a captain, I happened to support his charity idea shortly after trading for him, and he was Extremely Popular locally.
He was looking for a 7 year extension at star level money at age 30. With a young stud catcher still at least 2 years away in the minors, I decided to extend him to a 3 year deal at a little more money. He ended up taking the deal with no problems asked. One of the many reasons I continue to love OOTP, it truly feels like you are negotiating with real people sometimes. I hope he has a bounce back year now and can at least be productive until my prospect is ready. |

He's 28 now but he'll be 29 at the beginning of next year when the season starts. He's 9-0 with a 1.91 ERA this season so far. He's been lights out 3 years running before this.

I realize he will probably tank well before age 39 but maybe I'll get lucky and he'll still be effective at 43 like some of these guys I've seen in my league's history.

maybe, but not likely. just because it happens constantly in RL doesn't mean it's a good way to run things
![]() he's only 28/29, so if he didn't get into league until 23 or 24+, you'd have plenty of time to get a few more years before trading too. trading at 31-33 is end of prime time to do it, too. after that you are much less likely to get anythign useful in return. not arguing what should do, just that you aren't stuck with 1 option to keep the player no matter what. |

I will update on this soon. I'm in the World Series of the 2005 season now. I thought of this thread after former franchise cornerstone Fernando Valdes hit a game tying grand slam against me in the 8th inning of an ELDS game.

And just like that, the waiting in the wings replacement (in his 3rd season now since the decision) Kevin Smith just hit a game winning grand slam in Game 2 of the World Series against the Hollywood Stars (who we lost to in 7 games last season).

The first picture is of Fernando Valdes, the catcher I ultimately decided to let go. The second screenshot is of Kevin Smith, the catcher waiting in the wings who has been a more than suitable replacement in my opinion.
How do you guys think I did? I'm playing this on OOTP21 now by the way. |
