Bernie Gerl
One of baseball's great tragedies occurred on July 24, 1948. On that day, the Duluth Dukes, a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, were en route from Eau Claire, Wisconsin to St. Cloud, Minnesota when their team bus became involved in a head-on collision. George Treadwell, the Duluth manager who had been driving the bus, was killed. So were four of his players. In his playing days, Treadwell had been a catcher, and was good enough to have been on the Braves' spring roster in 1931.
Several other players were severely injured in the accident. One was Bernie Gerl, also a catcher, who was badly burned. Prior to the accident, he was a fairly good prospect for making the big league team. According to Gerl's obit, following his injuries the Cards turned their attention to developing a catcher named Joe Garagiola. However, Garagiola's record suggests that he already had a head start on Gerl with both major league experience and a better minor league record than Bernie. Bernie died yesterday (Nov. 7) at the ripe old age of 94. He was the last surviving member of the Duluth team involved in the horrible bus crash. The photo shows Bernie after he returned to the Duluth Dukes in 1952. It's from the Sioux Falls (SD) Argus-Leader of August 28, 1953 and accompanies an article about Bernie. The article was one of a series introducing visiting players who came to town to play the Sioux Falls team. https://www.baseball-reference.com/r...d=gerl--001ber Last edited by Cusick; 11-09-2020 at 03:33 PM. |

George Treadwell
In case the tragic story above associated with Mr. Gerl evokes interest in photos of George Treadwell, here are a couple. The one on the left is from the Canton (OH) Repository of Sept. 8, 1930 and shows him in the uniform of the Moline Plows minor league team. The one on the right is from the Davenport (IA) Daily Times of July 30, 1930. I assume that's also a Moline uniform, but I'm not sure.

I'm quite sure you've asked about this player before. First of all, his name is spelled Boze. I found a photo of a policeman named Tony Boze stationed in a town in Indiana, but since the ballplayer Tony Boze was from South Carolina, the odds of the cop being the right guy seemed to be low, so I didn't post it. Could not find any other photos.

Custom card of Charley Kolakowski
My family's original name was Kolakowski, so I needed to colorize the pic and make a custom 1959 card.

Jay Hankins Shreveport Sports
Here is Hankins, a 5'7 centerfielder here shown suiting up for Shreveport a team he played in 1959 and 1960. Jay Hankins would play for the Kansas City A's in '61 and '63 hitting a combined .185. He was an outstanding college player for Mizzou. Hankins also made the football team after joining as an a student aide in the training room. Apparently he flashed his considerable speed one day on the practice field. After his playing career Hankins was a minor league manager and worked as a scour for the Phillies where he passed on Frank Thomas, He passed away in January 2020.

Jay Hankins
Jay was my long term sub when I was in the 8th grade. He shared some great baseball memories with me and I recorded an interview with him on an old Fisher Price cassette.
His son, Mike, recently retired after a very successful career as a scout. |
