Signing Russian Players

Hey Guys!

I'm new to FHM so please be easy on me if this is a dumb question. But I was shocked to see Fedorov, Zubov, and Mogilny all available in the same draft. I drafted them all but have never been able to sign them. Do I just keep their rights until they "become" available and just hope they do? Did I miss a window to sign them possibly?

I traded them to other teams to see what would happen and the other teams were able to sign them immediately. I must be missing something.

I've never played a historical game, but in a modern-day game there's a certain window to sign European players, I think somewhere between August and September. Maybe you missed it?

The other thing you can do: resign from your team, take over the Russian team, release the player, resign, take over again your team, sign the player as free agent

Thank you! I'll check that out. I did trade their rights during the season and the teams I traded them to were able to sign them right away.

That's the Iron Curtain rule, it makes the Soviet-bloc players unsignable until 90-91 unless they actually played in the NHL prior to that (e.g. Mogilny in 89-90.) So, if you drafted them in the late 80's you wouldn't have been able to sign them immediately, but you may have advanced far enough when you traded them that the signing restriction had been dropped.

Strangely I was not able to sign them but as soon as I traded them the team I traded them to signed them immediately. Is there a setting or a way to sign them that i'm missing?

No, just the normal signing procedure. What year were you in when you tried to sign them?

Im in 1992 and still unable to sign the russian players still can't find an answer to my question should i trade them or will i be able to sign them ?
