Can't do Exhibition / Tournament with current teams?

I want to be able to play exhibition and tournament series with current rosters, but the only way to do this is via "Historical" mode which forces me to use last years roster.

If I want to use current rosters the only mode I can do is the full season.

Why can't I use current rosters for tournaments and exhibitions? That seems like the most basic mode included in every sports game.

If you start a standard 'full' game you can then set up an exhibition game from the 'play' menu with current teams (as they stand when the game starts). I don't think you can do tournaments this way though, but I am a newbie so maybe there is a way
