Tournament Inconsistency, ultra disappointment

I really want to get into tournaments, like a lot. But i've been very inconsisten compared to the amount of hours i've put to build my teams and analise data. My brief story: In the first 4 days of ootp I was doing pretty well, won 6 tournaments and made a good number of finals and had a .651 winning percentage. I knew i wouldn't be able to keep this up but i didn't expect to have a .292 winning pct in the next 4 days, i got past the first round 5 times in 4 days, playing religiously. I started researching players and looking at all tournaments stats to identify trends and thought that I had figured out the formula. Nope. So I decided to abandon them for a little bit. Came back Monday with the new cards, so I spent a whole lot of time again putting a new team together. Finished 2nd on the daily early iron, made the quarter finals on the late iron, and I also played 2 normal ones and won 1. I was excited, maybe finally i had the formula. Nope. played 13 tournaments on wednesday and won 4 games, not even series, 4 GAMES. Yesterday got past the 1st round 3 times in 25 or so tournaments just to get promptly swept. Today haven't got past the 1st round yet, no adjustments seem to matter. Thank you for reading me vent, I'm just so disappointed, I have spent north of 20 hours analysing player ratings, stats and looking for cards in the AH to use in tournaments and it hasn't paid off. I know that no one is going to give me the golden formula to win, but any tips are appreciated.

What division are you playing in? I have been doing this for the past 2 weeks on bronze and finally started winning (or at least placing) somewhat consistently. Bronze is pretty easy to be average once you get the meta pitchers. As for fielders, the market is inflated for Raines and Rose, but it undervalued some of the older era players. Just enter a tournament and slowly buy players on the winning teams.

The players are so cheap that almost everyone is going to use the same pool of meta players. You can spend a ton of time and maybe get a small edge but really the name of the game for low level tournaments is just spamming as many entries in a day as possible.

A lot of people don't set their sliders at all, or set them incorrectly. Strategies that maximize your team's strengths and minimize their weakness are huge when most rosters are almost the same.

Once my analysis provides me a team that is regularly winning series, I make sure to give it enough of a trial run to take deeper runs into the tournaments. Understand that in a 32-team tournament, 75% of the players are likely putting in as much time if not more. From there, it can be a bit of a crapshoot, but if you can keep entering with a team that's being competitive, you can keep running it out there without much effort. If I can collect 5-10 packs a day on a team that requires little maintenance aside from entering, I feel pretty good about that.

It's a bit of a personal cost/reward game... what are your expectations and can they be achieved if this is a realistic payoff? I expect to lose the majority that I join and end up having surges on days when I'm ready to give up my strategy.

Free-to-play, with an emphasis on the play.

I'm playing bronze now, I have all the pitchers but Paige and Bonham have been horrible for me, like really bad. I'm saving for those guys but it would be easier if I could win something so I could get packs and sell players.

Thank you. I tinker a lot with my strategies because I think i'm doing something wrong there usually I go fully sabermetric

Yes, I enter a tournament expecting to lose. But when you go on stretches were you win 1 game in every 3 or 4 games it can be super disappointing. I'm fine with not winning most of the time, but getting destroyed for consecutive days on end you start to think that it is a waste of time, more so when I'm putting a lot of effort into it.

Are you just hitting the full Sabermetirc preset then leaving it, or are you adjusting for game situations? Playing with a close lead in the 9th is different than playing with a big lead is different than playing from way behind.

Also, what you do in the first 6 innings will probably be different than the end of games. Make sure to hit each time/situation and adjust accordingly.

To save you hassle, after you get your overall strategy set, you can export that to a file. You'll need to see where the game says is save, and then go find that, rename it to something useful, and copy it into the strategy folder with the other managers. That will make it easy to recall quickly, espcecially if you are using multiple accounts on your license.

I built a new setup yesterday morning. I launched it in 9 tournies, and won 3 of them. Then proceeded to not cash for the next 25 before pulling out a few 3rds. Now that I'm done playing Master of Ikea, my ripped up knuckles and I are looking at that data to see why they stunk it up.

That’s fair, and I understand the frustration. I began to tinker and over-analyze so much that I had to dial back the variables to try to isolate what was going well when I had an inkling of success. Getting over that hump and then leaving it alone is the hard part for me. When all the BIL’s were released and I saw them being used by winners, I ended up tempted to spend and insert them into my lineup, only to blow up what particular mesh had been working for me, and I had to revert back to my “cheap cards” to place again.

I'm still trying to crack the code myself... Today's has been all 1st or 2nd round exits so far... need to work the strategy sliders and find something that fits.

Currently, I just spam Bronze Tourneys and hope for the best.

Just remember that even if you have a solid team you will have cold streaks. All things being equal, in 32 team tournaments you will win packs every eight you enter. At this point you are not going to build a team that is going to be significantly better than most in the tournaments. Even if you have an above average team that will get packs in one out of six tourneys, you have a 50/50 shot of going at least sixteen tourneys in a row without an outright win and more than a one in four chance of not getting any packs for at least seven tournaments. It can feel frustrating but it feels great when luck turns your way and you land a bunch of packs.

I don't know what's good or bad or should be expected, but here are my results.

Last week I entered 114 Bronze Bo7 tournies. I was "in the money" 23 times (20.2%), earning 136 packs (nearly 20/day).

Here's my series record by round:
Code:
Round 1 71-43
Round 2 35-36
Quarterfinals 23-12
Semifinals 16- 7
Finals 7- 9
My current spreadsheet goes back to 4/16. Since then, I entered 287 Bo7 and won packs 50 times (17.4%) totaling 261 packs (about 15/day). One day I won 44! packs, a couple of days later 0. So, it is a crapshoot, but I like the payoff so far!

So tell me, if you track your teams performance, how does this stack up?

This doesn't include anything that happened overnight or today, but since Tuesday of last week for Bronze B07.

Code:
Tournaments: 142
Round 1 94 - 48
Round 2 54 - 40
Quarterfinals 31 - 23
Semifinals 19 - 12
Finals 9 - 10

Win Rate: 6.34%
Pack Rate: 21.83%
Packs / Tournament: 1.24

Before I normally wouldn't but in the last couple weeks I have been. But I'm doing something really wrong with my bullpen because by the QF's or SF's all of them are at 0% and I just lose by 10-20 runs. I've tried a lot of different settings for SP and RP pulling but nothing seems to work. When I play 16 team tourneys with the same strategy they're always fresh, so I'm taking a break from 32's right now until I figure out what's wrong with my strategies.

I love to micromanage and overthink things, when you're doing fine is easy to just let them play. But when thr team gets cold it's really hard to leave them be and look for a culprit. And I don't even have all the meta hitters. I got 19K only, can't even buy Raines and Rose.

It really does feel good when things go right. I think the hardest thing is to know if your team is solid or not. You can have a very good day and them have 4 that you do absolutely nothing. So is my team solid or I just got really lucky on that particular day or is it just variance

Wow your team is really really good, congrats man. I have been tracking my new stats since saturday when I bought like 20-30 new bronzes and totally revamped my roster, here are the results through today's afternoon:

49 tournaments
313-259 (.547)
4//1st places
1//2nd places
6//3rd places (32's and a Daily)
48 packs

This is my best stretch in this game by far, I really hope i've got something good going on for once lol. The strategy advice from the other guy really helpe me too, even though I totally ruined my bullpen with my new strategies for 32's, but they're working really well for 16's so I'm not complaining
