That's a pretty decent Keough, thanks. Dilone will have to go on the 80s "need better" list I am compiling. I have discovered a few guys who I have not posted here yet but plan to post, such as Doug Corbett with the Orioles. They are forthcoming.

Bert James 1909
Bert James was known as Jesse James when he played for Waco. This may explain why it has been difficult to find reasonable photos of him. This photo is from the Waco Morning News of August 11, 1915.
I also discovered that he was with the Brooklyn Superbas for their spring training in 1912 and carried over early into the regular season before being demoted to Nashville. He doesn't qualify as a "phantom" major leaguer, however, because he did actually play in the majors for the Cardinals in 1909. A man of several nicknames, while he was with the Superbas, he was known as Tony James. |

Bert James 1909 - Brooklyn uniform
Cusick's post led me to a search of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle archives, where I found this image of James in the March 8, 1912, edition. Although it was spring training, he appears to be dressed in a Brooklyn uniform. |

Here is Bill Earley and Skeeter Barnes
I try to find a photo of every Cardinal from 1881 to present. Householder and Rajsich have been white whales for me.
Earley is a home made postcard from spring training. Barnes is Topps Vault |

Doug Corbett Baltimore Orioles 1987
Doug Corbett was a graduate of the Florida baseball program. The Royals signed him in 1974 as an undrafted amateur free agent but released him after just one season. Corbett signed with the Reds organization and pitched well for them for four seasons in the minors, but Cincy sent him to the Twins in 1979. Corbett made the Twins in 1980 as a 27-year old rookie. At that time the Twins' relief ace was Mike Marshall. Marshall was a fine pitcher over the course of his career but he was a) getting old, b) active in the players' union, and c) a rather contentious sort who alienated many people. So, when Marshall started off '80 pitching poorly and Corbett started well, the Twins released Mike and gave the top job to Corbett. Doug was excellent that year and excellent again in '81, but in '82 the Twins sent him and second baseman Rob Wilfong to the Angels for $400,000 cash, minor league pitcher Mike Walters, and some guy named Tom Brunansky. Bruno, of course, went on to a long and highly successful career as a slugging rightfielder for Minnesota. Corbett flopped hard that year in California and his career with the Angels was a roller coaster thereafter. Corbett hit one of the peaks in '86, when he served as a table setter for Donnie Moore and saved 10 games in the Angels' race to the divisional title. Corbett won game 4 of the '86 ALCS, but he didn't pitch very well. The Angels released him in the spring of '87 and he signed on with the Orioles in June. Corbett went 0-2 in 23 innings for Baltimore, with one save and a 7.83 ERA. Corbett suffered a knee injury and when he couldn't pitch on it he asked the O's to release him, which they did in August. Here are two options for him, courtesy of newspapers.com.

Gil Britton 1913
Facepack upgrade, pictured circa 1917. The image comes from the March 5, 1983 edition of The Parsons Sun. Britton was highly regarded in his hometown and lived to be 91 which happened to be the occasion for the image and article.

Jim Lewis Seattle Mariners 1985
Well, well. Just a couple of weeks ago I posted images of Jim Lewis with the Yankees. Today I was on youtube looking for a couple of California Angels when I stumbled across film of Lewis' last major league appearance, the second game of a Seattle-California doubleheader on August 12th, 1985, in Seattle. Lewis got the start and lost it; as I said previously, nature did not intend for him to be a starting pitcher. Announcer David Niehaus had some interesting things to say about Lewis: he didn't have a great fastball, he had a good move to first, and he was a nice guy who got along with everybody. Alas, sometimes the nice guys finish last. Here are two shots of Jim from the film.

Scott Bradley White Sox 1986
Scott Bradley was another victim of the Steinbrenner Curse. A catcher who could also play the infield and outfield corners, Bradley came up with the Yanks in '84 and had to waste two years of his career sitting while aging veterans (Butch Wynegar, Rick Cerone, Mike O'Berry, Ron Hassey) soaked up playing time in front of him. Prior to the '86 season the Yankees sent Bradley and Neil Allen to the White Sox to re-obtain Hassey. Bradley thus moved from one circus to another, since Hawk Harrelson was busy tearing the Sox to pieces. Bradley got just 21 ABs with Chicago and was then traded to Seattle for a Player to be Named who turned out to be Ivan Calderon. Given Bradley's limited playing time with Chicago that year it's not surprising that he has been hard to find in a White Sox uniform. Topps did catch him, but the photos were never used on cards. Here you go.

Atlee Hammaker 1981 UIN White Sox
First off, thanks, Terry, for prompting me to take a closer look at the UIN list. I'm catching up and hope to have the list in better shape within the next few weeks.
Although you can hardly see the edge of the logo on his hat, here is Hammaker with the 1994 White Sox, as pictured in the 11-Aug-1994 Joplin (MO) Globe. I'll leave him on the UIN list for now as "need better."
