Howard Calls Owners Meeting Prior to Draft

CBO Commissioner Nate Howard has requested that all owners attend a meeting prior to the draft on Sunday, November 5. The meeting is planned for Satruday, October 4. Both events will take place in Diamond City at the CBO HQ in The Great Green Jewel.

Though the full agenda has not been discussed, there have been some talks about rules changes that Howard prefers, as well as a discussion about the boom in the local population. Owners will have the opportunity to vote on all proposals, with Howard acting as the tiebreaker should the votes be even.

Roxbury's Carty Disapproves of Demotion, Threatens to Sit Out

Roxbury Knuckle Punchers relief pitcher Peanut Carty was informed he would be demoted to the BMU for the 2300 season after appearing in 23 games in relief in 2299. His reaction was not positive.

Through a spokesperson, also known as his mother, Carty let the Roxbury franchise know that he was not going to return as a protest of his demotion. His mother called Carty's season "fine, if it wasn't for all them bums playing around him." Carty finished the season with a 2-0 record and a 5.72 ERA in 50.1 innings pitched.

Manager Turbo Peabody let Carty know he needed more time in the BMU to advance his skills. According to Carty's mother, her son is already the best. With the standoff, Peabody will be at neither level until he decides he is ready to play again.

"We heard him," Peabody said. "We heard him, but the question is if he heard us. If he thinks he is big time, well, then, he is part of our problem. We're looking to put the best 25 on the field. Right now, he ain't one."

Former BYDL Manager Takes Over Chemists

Webster Builder spent nine years in the Boston Youth Development League's ranks before he decided to put his skill to the test in the CBO as a player. Unfortunately for him at 37, no team was willing to sign him to their squad. Now Builder has convinced the Sunshine Tidings Chemists that he is the right man to take over their struggling franchise.

Builder is considered to be a youth-devoted manager with a tendency towards a heavier offense than pitching staff. He's not an overly aggressive coach, so his teams will not tend to lead the league in stolen bases nor runs thrown out trying to extend plays. He will most certainly have his work cut out for him with a roster of Brightsun Ramos, Frank Corsica, and almost no one else worthy of being a starter in the CBO.

While in general I'm against changing rules just for changes sake, I do like the drama such rule change discussions and votes bring

The change will be something that saves me some time because I won't have to micromanage as much. It is tough keeping files of different tasks I need to complete, so this rule change is probably among them in giving me less work. Announcement in game on November 4.

I appreciate your words. Now I need to find a pic of Nick that makes him look more . . . ahem . . . human.

Ah, don't take it as any actual criticism of what you're doing. Indeed, my comment was more commentary on the "compressed" natured of these stories. In real life leagues evolve over decades, centuries, but you are fitting an entire drama into 10-20 years, so it's only natural you have to run things faster. In real life I dislike it when people "kneejerk" basically and swing the pendulum back and forth so fast there's no time to see what happens, but I wasn't trying to condemn the practice for this story or anything. When you have such a limited time to work with, it really is your only option. Though I do suppose the counter to my "the league has only been around 4 years" is "its a young league it's still teething".

Quincy's Fischler Becoming a Fish

As a hero in the Commonwealth thanks to a rescue he made last year while playing with the Taffington Boathouse Spy Hunters, Quincy's Baywatch Fischler is now working harder to be better. His workout method? Swimming. Lots of swimming. He has made his home in Easy Town in the offseason. There, he works out by swimming from the Harbor to the Atlantic every day. and then back again. We caught up to him after he completed his swim for a cup of joe at Easy Town's Slocum's Joe cafe.

Publick Occurrences: You are swimming eight hours a day. Is that accurate?

Baywatch Fischler: Yes, that's right. I want to be bigger, stronger, faster, and swimming is the best workout for that.

PO: You are now on your third franchise, first with Easy Town, then Atom, and now Quincy. Are you on your forever team now?

BF: I hope so. I understand that teams want to get better, but I have been traded before the trade deadline two years in a row. I'm thankful I went to a good team with the Gunners from the Cats, but it certainly makes me feel unwanted. I was most upset when the Trons traded me to the Garage. I was ready to make them happy they signed me as a free agent.

PO: Your offseason home is here in Easy Town. Any plans to move to Quincy?

BF: I will get an apartment in Quincy soon for the baseball season, but I like it here in Easy Town. It is a relaxing place and has a lot of people to meet. And of course, I love the ocean here.

PO: Speaking of the ocean, you are now called "Baywatch" because of a rescue you made. Tell us about that.

BF: That was when I was playing with Taffington. I was having dinner and drinks with some teammates at the bar and grill there, and then I heard some people yelling and something splashing in the water. I ran out to see what it was, and someone said a girl fell in. I didn't even think. I just jumped in, found her, and dragged her out. She was actually swimming better than she thought, but I guess she didn't have any confidence and just panicked. Still, everyone there started calling me "Baywatch," and I liked it. I have a lifetime supply of free drinks at the bar there, too.

PO: You never played on the Easy Town squad. How exactly did you end up with an apartment here?

BF: I tried out for the Assaultrons last year. I wasn't even sure I wanted to play baseball. I felt like it would take up too much of my time. The coaches were unsure, too. They thought I have a low work ethic because I worked out my body more than practicing baseball. So, they signed me and I got a place here but I don't know if they were really going to give me a chance. I wanted to prove to them I could be a good player, but I got punished because I didn't enter the draft like some of the other guys. I was going to show them that they still had a 1st-round pick on their team, but they sent me to Atom instead.

PO: What was your experience with Quincy like?

BF: To be honest, I struggled a lot once I got there. My batting average fell a lot. That could be trouble for me. That's why I am committing myself to building up my body more. I want to be a guy they pencil in the lineup every night, not someone they are searching for a better player. I saw that the scouting service ranked me as one of the worst starting right fielders in the league. That hurts.

PO: Do you think you can be like a 1st round pick like you mentioned?

BF: Definitely. The coaches may be wondering why I am not fielding fly balls and swinging the bat like the rest of the team, but I want them to see that I am going to come back with better agility, better stamina, and better overall skills. The rest of the team may be swimming with me next year!

PO: What do you think of Quincy's chances to win the Sole Survivor Series in 2300?

BF: We're coming. We're coming for Goodneighbor. We're coming for Diamond City. We're going to be the team to beat.

I didn't think of it as criticism. I was just explaining my thought processes behind my decisions. I'll keep on tweaking things as I need to based on what I think are tasks that slow me down or just don't work as I imagined them to. I may even tweak my daily dice rolls practice and just randomly add a story here and there as needed. With the injuries turned on, I don't actually have to roll for random injury events (incidence, leave, or creature attack). Then again, they do add much more danger to the Commonwealth!

How exactly are you rolling the dice? An autoroller online or actually physically rolling the dice? The former could speed things up, if you use the right one and configure your settings for the correct output, though I'll also admit half the fun of rolling dice is rolling the actual physical dice. I'm a big D&D player, so I'd never knock anyone who actually wants to use the real thing, even if a script can speed things up.

I have a Dice sheet in my Excel document with four columns of =RANDBETWEEN(1,6) next to each date. My usual method is that each day where there is an event, I do a physical click re-roll in case there is another event. Technically, there could be an infinite number of events on any given date as long as the dice roll one of my three event combinations of max/med/min. To save time, I have decided to use only a single event per day for the offseason, so now I just copy and paste results on my Events sheet. That saved more time than physically transferring each result and then making space for a second roll.

When there is an event, I use Random.org to roll for intensity and length, and use the random number generator to determine which team(s) and player(s) are a part of the event. Therefore, the simple roll is not just rolling, but bringing as much randomness to the "victim" as possible. If there is no event, I spend far less time. If there is an event, you see the proof through the news story I generate.

Halloween Event Canceled in Easy Town

Easy Town was supposed to have a town-wide Halloween event today, including a party featuring several of the Assaultrons players at a party at the Blue Plate club. Instead the event was canceled by Kay Merchant today due to the sixth murder in what people are calling the Easy Town murders.

We have not been allowed specific details of the case nor the current victim, but a sixth victim was found near the docks yesterday. Attention to the CBO was first garnered when Assaultrons pitching coach Kyle Verrecchio's wife, Kay Adams-Verrecchio was found murdered. She was the third victim. There have now been three more.

Roxbury's Swenson Wins Strong-Man Competition

Roxbury Knuckle Punchers backup catcher Biddy Swenson participated in the Roxbury Strong Man Competition at Toyland this week, taking the 2299 championship over the two-time defending champion George "Guai" Maximus.

Swenson excelled in the Stone Toss event, breaking the previous record by throwing the 25-pound stone 88 feet (nearly the length of a baseball base). The previous record was held by Bull Jane Whitfield who threw it 76 feet.

Swenson also was the top athlete in the Squat Lift, topping out at 850 pounds, just short of Maximus' record of 875 pounds. Maximus topped out at 800 pounds in this year's event.

For winning the event, Swenson won 1000 caps and will have his poster at Toyland's Strong-kiddo section of the theme parks. Swenson decided to use his Knuckle Punchers roster picture for the poster.

Easy Town Assaultrons Ship Sixx to FHE

In an effort to add some depth to its roster, the Easy Town Assaultrons have swapped 30-year-old RHP Daddy-O Sixx to the FHE Yao Guai for 21-year-old 2B Allen Burmaster, 20-year-old minor league RHP Ed Gibbs and 20-year-old minor league RHP Stack Moneyman. The Assaultrons GM told reporters, "We saw a chance to upgrade our ball club and took it."

During his career Sixx has compiled a 2-1 mark, pitched in 61 games, been credited with 1 save and posted a 4.58 ERA. He has 88 strikeouts in 96.1 innings pitched.

2 November 2299

Howard Forces Lexington to Make Roster Moves

CBO Commissioner Nate Howard gave the Lexington Synths an October 31 deadline to secure some moves that will upgrade their BMU team, the Union Hope Lifegivers. Union Hope finished with a 14-62 record (.184 winning percentage) in 2299, which Howard deemed "unacceptable."

Today, the Synths made two BMU depth-building moves.

Lexington-Jamaica Plain Trade: Dee El for Prospects

It likely won't turn either team into an instant contender or provide a huge franchise shakeup, but the Lexington Synths and Jamaica Plain Red Rockets finalized a trade today. Lexington will send 29-year-old RHP Doug Dee El, 21-year-old minor league RHP Mark Phillips and a 3rd round draft pick to the Red Rockets, while the Synths will receive 22-year-old minor league SS Barry Midday, 19-year-old minor league CF Josh Laborde, 30-year-old minor league 1B Aaron Welloff, 20-year-old minor league RHP Chad Sweet and a 2nd round draft pick.

"We think this is a deal that will help out both teams and we're glad to get it done," Synths general manager Jason Saum said.

The trade is expected to be officially completed later today with the players joining their new ballclubs by the end of the day.

Since breaking into the league, Dee El has claimed 46 saves and held opposing hitters to a .229 batting average with 133 strikeouts. In 92 games, he has a 6-8 record and a 2.63 ERA.

Sweet has fashioned a 3-3 won-lost record in his career with a 5.23 ERA.

Lexington Synths Ship Turnbull to Salem

Earlier today, officials from the Lexington Synths and the Salem Witch Hats announced that they had finalized negotiations on a trade between the two teams. The deal will send 20-year-old 3B Newspaper Turnbull and a 4th round draft pick to Salem in exchange for 22-year-old minor league RHP Rafe Sauce, 20-year-old minor league RHP Max Grove, 28-year-old minor league RF Scott Bregman and a 4th round draft pick.

Bregman has 27 career hits with a .248 batting average and 4 home runs.

3 November 2299

Finch Farm Reliever to take 2300 Break

Finch Farm relief pitcher Bull Johnson will take a break from the CBO in 2300 to take on an internship with Safari Adventure park at Nuka-World.

Johnson said he enjoys playing baseball but he loves animals more. He will work as part of the Animals of the Wastes exhibit at Safari Adventure from November 2299 until November 2300.

He let the team know today that he has officially accepted the invitation from Nuka World and that he looked forward to the opportunity for a different career.

In four years as an undrafted free agent for the Four Leafs, Johnson played on the Finch Farm team three of those years (2296, 2298-2299). He has appeared in 81 games, gaining a record of 3-2 with 7 saves. He has a career ERA of 5.90 in 151.0 innings, In 2299, he was 1-0 with a 4.52 ERA in 36 appearances.

4 November 2299

CBO: Howard Announces Partnership, Rule Change

CBO Commissioner Nate Howard announced today two changes to take place for the CBO starting in the 2300 season.

The biggest change the day before the CBO Rookie Draft is that the CBO will now include the Boston Youth Development League under the CBO umbrella. Currently, the BYDL is the main player supplier to the CBO with around 80% of all players having played for one of the 20 BYDL teams before they were draft eligible.

The BYDL did have a lack of talent for some time since the original CBO Inaugural draft allowed players as young as 16 to join the draft. After that season, the CBO required all draft picks to be either 18 or 19 years old at the time of the draft.

In addition to becoming a part of the CBO, the BYDL will expand to 24 teams from its current 20. Just four years ago, the BYDL was made up of only 10 teams. The teams are not affiliated with individual teams, so the BYDL is a feeder league for the CBO.

The CBO teams are as follows in no particular order: Pleasant Minigunners, Boston Common Baby Bellies, Beerthirty Sippers, Thompson Heights Earthlings, Green Future Sea Urchins, Fallon's Shoppers, North Charles Bank Goonies, Boston Harbor Harborfellows, South Charles Bank Moonies, Diamond City Newsboys, Hester Consumers, Andrew Station Southies, Jamaica-UPoint Death Rockets, South Beach Waves, Concord-Lexington Minuteboys, Haymarket Haymakers, Kendall Hospital Yahoos, State House Orphans, Gwinnett Restaurant Seasiders, and Wattz Ups.

In other news, Howard cited competitive balance in making a rule that limits the use of stimpacks on players for life-threatening injuries only. That means that players injured over the course of a baseball game will have to heal naturally before they can return to the field. Howard said that the decision was made due to the action of the Atom Cats organization when they decided to seek their own stimpacks among the shortage.

Howard took a vote at the meeting and there was more support than he expected with a 17-6 vote in favor of changing the rule to eliminate stimpacks. Starlight Lady Killers owner Irish Cait decided to recuse herself from the vote since she was the person who proposed the idea. Three of the six votes against the rule change came from the Minutemen League, including Atom's owner, Zeke Cat. Warwick's Roger Warwick and Quincy's Smiling Larry were the other two. The other three voting against the rule were County Crossing's Doc Weathers and Vault 81's Dr. Jacob Forsythe, citing long-term health issues as a concern, and Nordhagen Beach's Emogene Cabot.

That seems like a good system, and generates plenty of drama, quite balanced between efficiency/time saving and actually making sure we get things of interest.

On the rule change: Makes sense, and good vote stack tally. Will say Cait had more integrity than people from my Student Government days. I did like that Stimpaks were a part of this dynasty, but at the same time, I like OOTP's injury system, and really, injuries are a vital part of baseball (any sport really). I mean that as in strategy has to account for it and that's interesting, not as in I enjoy seeing people get hurt, obviously

Yes, I figured I am going to bottleneck too many players if there are never any openings. New players need some way to break through and injuries have been a part of "opportunity" for a long time. Well, old age, too, but I have a lot of early-20s guys in this league. Maybe over many years that will even out more.
