Johnnie Dawson
Catcher Johnnie Dawson played in the Negro Leagues from 1938 through 1942 for the Memphis Red Sox, Kansas City Monarchs, Chicago American Giants, and Birmingham Black Barons. He was born in 1915. He is shown here in the uniform of the Kansas City Monarchs. The image comes from the SABR book, When The Monarchs Reigned: Kansas City's 1942 Negro Leagues Champions.
A photo of a different John Dawson was posted on this thread on October 4, 2014. That John Dawson was born in 1942. |

Helburn Meadows
Thank you, bctrackboi, for the above Helburn Meadows photo. I went back to the original photo from the family on the player's obituary page to see if I could bring out his facial features a little more. The result is shown below.

James Leonard Mitchell (1895-1969)
In the 1920s, Leonard began playing baseball with the Negro Leagues. There aren’t many records on his career [not even Seamheads], but he did play for the Louisville Mohawks and the Louisville White Sox. As one of the organizers of the Louisville Black Colonels in 1939, Leonard was an integral part of Negro League baseball at all levels, including promotion. He also owned and managed the Louisville Black Caps and the Original Zulu Cannibal Giants.
So passionate about baseball, Leonard amassed a massive collection of Negro League memorabilia. In 2009, family took the collection to the Louisville Slugger Museum for advice. The collection garnered national attention and went to auction. In an interview about the auction his daughter stated, “As a kid, I can remember him being glued to the TV in baseball season. It was like the TV was an extension of his right arm. He loved baseball. He ate, slept, walked, talked, read baseball. In his own quiet way, I think he knew he was part of opening doors that led to other people getting a chance to play.” Photo shown of Leonard in his Mohawks uniform is from Love of the Game Auctions. This is the same player shown from afar in post #1879. |

Ken Free played third base for the 1959 Raleigh Tigers of the Negro Leagues. I posted a photo of him on this thread on November 23, 2014, but I think this shot gives a better view of his face. This photo is from his obituary. He died on December 29, 2021.

Horace "Pete" Venable
Horace Venable was an outfielder and a pitcher. He claimed to have played for the Indianapolis Clowns around 1950. I can't find his name listed in the usual sources for confirmation, but since he was an invited guest to a Jerry Malloy Negro Leagues Conference sponsored by SABR, I'll take that as an imprimatur. He died on Dec. 24, 2021 at age 92, so it seems a reasonable assumption that he was born in 1929. The photo was his obit photo.

George H. Wilson
This is an improved image for George Wilson, who played for the Adrian (MI) Page Fence Giants Negro League team in the 1895-98 period. I think the uniform he is wearing in this shot was when he was younger and playing for the Adrian Demons, an integrated team in the Michigan State League.

Jose "Cheo" Hernandez 1915
I haven't focused my efforts too much on the NGL yet, but I found a nice image of Hernandez while looking for another player. He was pictured as a member of the 1927 Miami Hustlers in the 9/4/1927 edition of The Miami Herald.
