I see Bartolo Colon has six saves. Coincidentally six is his total number of real life relief appearances.

With the strength of the Gothams' staff, I suspect he'll be closing 'em out for a while longer in this league.

Game of the Week – Sunday, July 9 1961
Virginia Fury (42-47) @ Kansas City Blues (48-40)
Easton Ballyard – Kansas City, MO; 7.05 pm KANC: Robin Roberts (7-9, 4.61) PORT: Mike Mussina (7-6, 3.88) Good evening one and all, welcome to tonight’s Game of the Week broadcast, I’m your host Nik Hill. Tonight we’re at Easton Ballyard in Kansas City to watch the Blues take on the Virginia Fury, who we saw in action last week against the Grays. KC have been pretty good this season apart from a nasty little nine-game skid in the middle of last month. Even with that, they’re sitting comfortably at 48-40 and still in the South Division mix just 4 ½ back of Atlanta. Robin Roberts gets the ball for them in this one, 7 and 9 so far on the year with a 4.61 ERA I’m sure he’d be looking to bring down. Catcher Jim O’Rourke has been a revelation for the Blues but sadly it’s his off-night so if we see him at all in this one it will only be in a limited capacity. Still, they’ve plenty of other big bats in their squad, with Cody Bellinger looking a real lively type and Bill Dahlen providing them with plenty of spark from the leadoff spot. Virginia has been a total enigma in the season to date. A dreadful start was followed by strong and sustained run through May and June, in which they went a combined 34-20 and got back in touch with the leaders. But they’ve gone horribly cold again this month, losing 8 of their last 10 including an 8-0 shocker last night. Mike Mussina will be looking to turn that around for them in this one. He’s had a solid if unspectacular year, 7-6 to this point with a 3.88 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 145 innings pitched. Eddie Murray has tried hard, with his 14 homers up near the top of the Southeast League in that category, but as a team they rank at or near the bottom in all offensive areas, and that has been their main problem because their pitching staff has actually done pretty well. Unfortunately a power surge about two hours ago has knocked out the on-field broadcast facilities so no Juliana Scott interview today. Instead, we’ll be back after this short break with the first pitch. Stay tuned. ![]() TOP 1ST A nice and easy clean inning to begin with for Roberts. BOTTOM 1ST Early drama for Moose as Dahlen leads off with a trip and comes in on a Bellinger double. He then scores in turn on a sac fly by Cabrera. Kansas City 2, Virginia 0 TOP 2ND Just a two-out hit to Clemente. BOTTOM 2ND A better inning by Mussina, sending them down in order. ![]() TOP 3RD Another strong inning for Roberts. BOTTOM 3RD Big-time strife for the visitors as KC loads them up with one out and Cabrera knocks two in with a single. Freehan is HBP to reload them and a Flick fielder’s choice adds another run to their lead. Mussina finally gets out of the inning by fanning Phillips. Kansas City 5, Virginia 0 TOP 4TH The Fury get a runner on but Murray GIDPs to douse the rally. BOTTOM 4TH The top of this Blues order is giving Mussina fits, and they go further ahead when Dahlen singles with two out and Bellinger plates him with a long double. That’s all Weaver can stand and he deploys Nolan Ryan from the pen. Kansas City 6, Virginia 0 TOP 5TH Little doing for the visitors. BOTTOM 5TH You can see why this Fury team has had consistency issues, it’s a pretty wobbly pitching staff they’ve got at the moment. Ryan walks three to fill the bags and Gehrig empties them with a 3-run double. This is getting a little embarrassing. Kansas City 9, Virginia 0 ![]() TOP 6TH Roberts, looking strong, strikes out the side. BOTTOM 6TH A McCovey one-out single, which leads nowhere, is all. TOP 7TH Roberts remains in total control with another 1-2-3 inning. BOTTOM 7TH A single by Phillips ends Ryan’s game, with Wilbur Wood summoned. He proceeds to give up a double to Bucky Walters and an RBI single to Dahlen, his third hit of the game, then another to Bellinger, his fourth. Kansas City 11, Virginia 0 TOP 8TH A slight wobble from Roberts – aided by a Flick error – but he wiggles his way out of it with the shutout still intact. BOTTOM 8TH By this point the Fury look thoroughly disinterested and a Boudreau error puts Greenberg aboard, then Freehan doubles him home. A couple of groundouts bring him around to score, with Phillips getting the ribbie. Kansas City 13, Virginia 0 TOP 9TH Roberts just can’t see the shutout through as he gives up back-to-back two-out doubles to Damon and Brooks Robinson. Still, he gets the CG by inducing a pop-fly from Myer to end it. BOTTOM 9TH X Kansas City 13, Virginia 1 (final). WP: Robin Roberts (8-9) LP: Mike Mussina (7-7) POTG: Cody Bellinger 4-5 / 2 2B / 3 RBI. Not sure we’ve seen a worse performance in our telecasts this season than the one the Fury gave us tonight. They just didn’t show up at all. Poor pitching, sloppy in the field and very little going on at the plate. Earl Weaver sure has his work cut out for him if this is what he has to work with. Credit where due, however, the Blues were fantastic, especially the top of their order – Dahlen, Bellinger, McCovey and Cabrera – who were nigh on unstoppable. And Roberts gave a classy showing up on the hill that in all honesty deserved a shutout. We're heading South next week to sunny Florida to bring you Prince Albert, Longo and the rest of the Panthers crew up against The Big Hurt Frank Thomas and his Carolina Triplets. Should be plenty of action in that one, hope you can join us. Until then, be safe and thanks for watching.
