STILL ANYONE’S RACE IN THE AL WITH JUST 3 ½ GAMES SEPARATING TOP SIX TEAMS

BROOKLYN MAKE A RUN FOR IT IN THE NL BEFORE A LATE SETBACK REINS THEM IN A TAD

Notable Performances
  • 2nd: both Pat Ragan of the Browns and Danny Duffy of the Reds pitch 3-hitters in shutout wins over the Tigers and Cubs, respectively.
  • 4th: Gary Matthews jr goes 4-for-6 with a double and 5 ribbies as the Phillies flog the Giants 14-4.
  • 5th: a battle royale between the Cubs and Giants that features 29 runs, 34 hits and 7 errors ends in a 10-inning 16-13 road win for the Baby Bears.
  • 7th: Beaneaters hurler Andy Coakley shuts out the Bucs on 2 hits and fans 8 in a 2-0 win that ups his record to 8-3.
  • 8th: another 2-hitter, this time by the Cards’ Jimmy Dygert in a 10-0 thumping of Brooklyn. St. Louis outfielder Mark Teahan has four hits, two of them doubles, and drives in 3.
  • 10th: 5 hits by outfielder John Titus aren’t enough to stop Washington drop a 5-4 decision to Cleveland.
  • 13th: Barney Wolfe pitches a gem, shutting out the Reds on 2 hits with 7 Ks as the Giants get a 2-0 win.
  • 15th: the excellent pitching continues, as Fred Glade of the A’s gets his 12th win of the year in fine style, two-hitting Detroit in a 9-0 cakewalk.
  • 22nd: not quite sure what Beaneaters Manager Frank Crespo is thinking with this one, but all’s well that ends well I guess as he leaves starter Andy Coakley in for 20 innings against Brooklyn. Over those 20 innings, or 236 pitches, Coakley allows 9 hits but nary a run and the Bostonites finally walk it off 1-0 on a John Hummel single.
  • 26th: after starter Jack Rowan is injured in the 3rd, Pittsburgh’s Mickey McDermott pitches 6.2 innings of no-hit ball against Cincinnati. The Pirates cruise to a 9-0 win.
  • 29th: White Sox 2B Hector Lopez has 5 hits including 2 doubles and drives in 3 in an 8-1 win over the Naps.

Achievements
  • 4th: AL PotW – Pat Ragan (St. Louis); NL – Mike Lynch (Brooklyn); PSLA – Mike Vail (Newark); PSLN – Doc Crandall (Wichita Falls).
  • 11th: AL PotW – John Titus (Washington); NL – Alex Sanchez (Pittsburgh); PSLA – Henry Boyle (Shreveport); PSLN – Ryan Rayburn (Wichita Falls).
  • 18th: AL PotW – Rube Manning (New York); NL – Jack Pfiester (Brooklyn); PSLA – Rube Oldring (Joplin); PSLN – Frank Snyder (Reading – on Rehab assignment).
  • 23rd: the Giants run an 11-game win streak in mid-month before dropping a game to the Phillies.
  • 25th: AL PotW – Dickey Kerr (New York); NL – Adam Kennedy (Philadelphia); PSLA – Curt Ford (Chattanooga); PSLN – Brett Gardner (Harrisburg).

Injuries
  • 3rd: a torn rotator cuff ends Cincinnati pitcher Big Jeff Pfeffer’s season early.
  • 9th: the NL-leading Superbas lose gun catcher Ellie Rodriguez for three weeks with a fractured foot.
  • 18th: Americans hurler Lefty Tyler is struck down with a bout of biceps tendinitis and looks set to miss about a month’s action.
  • 20th: a fractured finger will sideline Cubs first-baseman Norm Larker for 4-5 weeks.
  • 27th: Hobe Ferris has a finger fractured when HBP, an injury that will keep him out of action for the better part of two months.

Transactions
  • 2nd: the White Sox sign outfielder Joe Pepitone to a minor league deal.
  • 3rd: the Reds release pitcher Danny Duffy, an off-season Free Agent signing.

Any of the various Boileryards. There was one the other day that caught my eye but I've lost it now. It'll come back to me.

I've just started reading The Cup of Coffee Club, about 11 players who only played one game in the bigs. Very Footnote League. I'm going to see how these 11 import and if it's worth doing so they'll be joining the FL for the '07 Draft.

Elvio Jimenez Hit .333 in his one game MLB career.

I saw him in a AAA game after that. Long Minor League career.

I'll add him to the CCC (Cup of Coffee Club) list of potential additions for '07, let's see how he rates up on import.

I have too many years to remember!

If I jump out of my own game and walk outside quickly I expect to see a Plymouth Valiant in the driveway!

You need to have the games close with a screen with the current date.

I remember years ago playing Carrier Strike which had 20 minute turns, mumbling "What time is it?" and my GF speaking up with the real life answer.

This is a quirky new little feature on S+ that presents a revolving array of fun factoids from the FL.
