John Shaffer 1886

Thanks to SABR for finding Shaffer!
I found a photo of John "Cannonball" Shaffer, who played with Atlanta in 1886 prior to his debut in New York, printed in the Atlanta Constitution on April 27, 1919 (pg 5). Shaffer should also be in the 1886 Atlanta team photo from 1886, which can be seen on Threads of Our Game (https://www.threadsofourgame.com/1886-atlanta/). My best guess is this player from that photo.

Perhaps someone can clean up the photo from the Atlanta Constitution to get a better match.

I'm almost positive that is him. I've worked a long time on the 1886 Atlanta team photo. Currently, I had the IDs as:

Top Row, L-R: Frank Wells, Jim Conway, Charles Williams?, George Mappes?, Cub Stricker, Tom Lynch
Middle Row, L-R: John Shaffer, unidentified, Blondie Purcell
Bottom Row, L-R: Elias Peak, Monk Cline, Joe Gunson, Denny Lyons, Henry Moore

Say, CO...

Would the Remini app help improve the Shaffer's photo?

Nice find!

Unfortunately not. The Remini app doesn't do well with newspaper images. I've had this photo for a couple of years when I was working on the 1886 Atlanta team photo for Threads of Our Game. It's obviously based on a cabinet photo so I'm holding out hope it reappears someday.

According to the Macon Telegraph, Elias Peak and Patsy McDonald were released on April 23. Mappes was released by the Maroons to Atlanta on May 5, and Wells didn't join the club until mid-May. I'll post some more information to the Photo ID thread.

Jim Duncan 1899

I was hoping for information about the source of this image of Duncan that is currently in the Facepack. I've had no luck finding it.

The source is The Sporting News of August 17, 1895. The banner for this woodcut of the Franklin team is "Champions of the Pennsylvania League's First Season." The player is identified as Duncan, C - the C standing for catcher, his playing position. The other players in the image were identified similarly.

Jim Gray 1884 MISSING PLAYER

Pictured with the 1886 East Liberty Gyms of Pittsburgh. He played locally in and around Pittsburgh for many years. Image comes from the March 1, 1942 edition of the Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph.

FINALLY a non-airbrushed REAL COLOR photo of Ray Fosse on the 1977 Seattle Mariners has appeared:

Great image.

Curious - is this image (airbrushed for his 78 Brewers card) an actual photo of him in his Mariners uni?

Wow! That team picture was quite a find. Ad Gumbert and future NL President John Tener were also on that East Liberty Gyms amateur team along with Jimmy Gray. Amazing. Thanks for the posting.

Nope, that’s an airbrushed photo as well.

Al McLean and Jim Hayes 1935 UIN

From the Pegasus request files, here is Al McLean and Jim Hayes in Washington Senators garb. The photo was printed in the July 14, 1935 edition of the Evening Star. For some strange reason, the newspaper printed the players middle names as their first name.
