Joe Murphy 1886
There is a photo of the 1882 St. Louis University baseball team on their digital archives, which includes a very young Joe Murphy. I'm posting a link below, because I'm not sure that I can post the image itself due to copyright questions.
http://digitalcollections.slu.edu/di.../id/1496/rec/1 Murphy is in the front row, second from the left, with a smug look on his face (as opposed to Father Joseph Murphy, standing behind him). Correction: That should be second from the right, not second from the left. Last edited by prewinter; 10-20-2021 at 08:22 PM. |

Joe Murphy 1886
Thank you, prewinter, for the link to the St. Louis University team photo containing the image of Joe Murphy. I think you meant to say he was in the front row, second from right rather than second from left. The caption and numbering system reads that way. Furthermore, the fellow second from right looks like the only image I have of Joe Murphy (see below) which comes from The Sporting News of May 24, 1886.

Yep, should have been second from the right. And I even mentally checked myself twice to make sure I got that correct... oh well. I found another image of him as part of a sketch of a Chicago Commercial League club in the early 1890s. It is a composite in the Inter Ocean of the Whitings on May 7, 1893, shown below. Jim Murphy (#3) is actually Joe Murphy, who had moved to Chicago and taken a position with the Tribune after a messy incident involving a death at an amateur boxing match, at which he was the referee. He wound up being charged as an accessory to murder, but wasn't convicted. In that same sketch I think Charlie Hallstrom is #7. Thomas Barrett (#2) went on to become Sheriff of Cook County. Charlie Hallstrom 1885
That image of the Whitings reminds me that Charlie "The Swedish Wonder" Hallstrom is in the Oshkosh team photo of 1886, but the specific player hasn't been confirmed. There are two options in the photo, so here is a comparison of the sketch from the Whitings between the two options from the Oshkosh team photo, as well as a photo of him when he was somewhat older.

Tom Glass and Art Stokes 1925
From the Pegasus UIN files, here are Glass and Stokes in Athletics garb during Spring Training in 1925. They were pictured in The Philadelphia Inquirer on March 1, 1925.

Joe Jaeger 1920
I've had pretty good luck tracking down obscure players recently. Jaeger, on the other hand, has completely eluded me. If anyone has anything better than the attached image of Jaeger it would be much appreciated.

Sorry, I don't have anything for Schriver with Chicago. There aren't any known photos of the Chicago teams from 1892-1894 and he unfortunately doesn't appear in the 1891 team photo.

If I remember correctly they were with the other Senators photos from the same photoshoot (posted here years ago). I found them on an online museum archive, possibly the national archives website.

The Washington Times of April 30th, 1895 indicated that this player is Herman Collins from Columbus. He was in Spring Training and had been signed in February. He became the odd man out on the roster and was let go not long after this article was written. |

Herman Collins, of the Washington Club, of the National League and American Association (the full name of the NL during the 1890's--RUKen) was born April 16, 1873, at Columbus, O., and learned to play ball in his native city. His professional career began in 1894, with the New Orleans Club, of the Southern Association. His excellent work attracted the attention of Manager Schmelz, of the Washington Club, and at the close of that season he engaged him for the Washington team. A trial was given to Collins during the early exhibition season, while the Washingtons were sojourning in the South, and he played very acceptably. After the regular championship season began Collins was loaned to the Nashua Club, of the New England Association. He played short stop and captained the team until the New England Association disbanded, about the Fourth of July. Collins has been credited with several batting and fielding performances. The most noteworthy of his batting feats occurred during the season of 1894, while he was connected with the New Orleans team. He was credited with five safe hits, including a home run, three double baggers and a single out of six times at the bat. He is young and ambitious and should do well yet. |
