A lot of the guys you're listing here have actually been made freely available recently in real life. Waived or DFA'd/outrighted in the case of Gonzalez and Kahnle or been on a string of one-year minor league deals (Tomlin).

Alexander, Alvarez and Smith are last guy on the roster type RP's.

DeSclafani is the only slightly odd one, but he's an upcoming free agent having a fairly mediocre year who's unlikely to fetch much in a trade, so is pretty fungible.

These are exactly the sort of guys the AI should be waiving or DFA'ing when it needs roster space.

Unhappy Strange roster moves by Tampa

Don't know if I have seen anything like this before...

Also, they have DFA'd Brendan McKay ...

Update - 2nd time McKay was DFA'd he was claimed by Oakland!

I'm sorry, but for the AI to sign a player and release him in the offseason is just plain wrong. If you want to tie it to a storyline, that's fine... but just because they have too many pitchers and Joe Smith ends up being released is not realistic.

The point I am trying to make is that there is potentially some changes to the way the AI handles their roster construction.
Teams like LAD for example routinely end up with 12+ RP where they can only carry 8 or 9.
Eventually they end up losing their own prospects who get buried in minors and run out of MiLB option years eventually.

Question This makes no sense though

Do you have any thoughts on why someone like Shun would be added back to the 40-man Lukas?

Angry LAD signed RP ... then released

Here are five recent examples of signing then being released in same offseason.

You can't tell me this is a "rare occurrence" based on these signings from one offseason.

Update - Here is another instance from the next offseason.

Thumbs down NYM sending injured pitcher on rehab assignment

Friedrich was injured on May 4th, yet returned from rehab assignment on May 7th somehow?
This roster crunch cost Steven Matz his spot and was DFA'd.

Angry Adam Frazier

DFA'd by Boston after having a very strong start to his season.

Boston still has Victor Reyes though...

Frazier Update - He continued his strong season after being claimed on waivers. 5.1 WAR!

Can you explain "when it needs roster space"? Perhaps this is something I am missing.

There still appears to be a lingering issue where AI adds injured players to 40-man roster. I have posted about this numerous times, yet nothing has changed it seems.

Angry Daniel Norris

Two years in a row he has signed with LAD and been released after signing a multi year free agent contract!!!

Update - LAD current has 22 pitchers on 40-man and that roster crunch looks imminent!!!

Update 1 - First RP has been DFA'd in Raisel Iglesias!

Update 2 - Blake Treinen has been DFA'd

Update 3 - Jordan Hicks is latest DFA

Update 4 - Eduardo Rodriguez has been DFA'd. He is making 14.2m this year, 16m next year and 18.6m in 2025.

... and he was claimed by Baltimore.

Travis Blankenhorn

OPS over 1.000 in AAA last year (yes he is out of options) and DFA'd by the Twins!

Here is how Minny handled this roster decision. Did they "need" to callup Aaron Sabato so badly that they DFA'd a guy like Travis Blankenhorn??

Update - Claimed by Washington!

Question Steven Matz

Pitches a no hitter on April 25th ... released on May 5th... resigns MiLB deal after getting 2yr contract in offseason??

FWIW, 2.47 ERA (3.57 FIP) in 58.1 innings last year and held opponents to a .198 BABIP against.

Exclamation Another odd Mets roster move

Seth Lugo was released by Houston in early August and the Mets signed him for remainder of 2023.

In order to make room on their roster, they DFA'd Taijuan Walker, who they signed to a 4yr contract this past offseason.

In 11 starts he has had an 3.69 ERA (4.36 FIP).

And yes, Seth Lugo is having his second good season, so why did Houston release him? They are in first place in the AL West too.

Thumbs down Pitt DFA's top prospect

The Pirates (coming off the 2023 WS victory) have DFA'd top prospect Liover Peguero.
He was added to 40man last winter as rule 5 draft protection. He split time between 2B & SS last year.

Here are the batters currently on their 40 man.
Plawecki, Renfroe and Aguilar are pending free agents.

Here are the pitchers currently on their 40 man.
Graveman and Lweicki are pending free agents.

Either Phillip Evans (out of options) or Clay Holmes would certainly be DFA worthy. Wil Crowe will miss all of 2024 and could also be DFA'd.

Edit - They have also kept Nick Gonzalez in AA for 3 full seasons.

Arrow Orioles DFA outfielder

Baltimore has DFA'd Robert Neustrom in order to active a few players from 60 day IL at start of offseason.
The Orioles do have 6 other outfielders on their 40-man (includes pending free agent Andrew Benintendi).

They also have decided to keep some questionable players instead of Neustrom (who has two option years remaining).

Here are seven pending free agents on their 40-man still.

Also, here are a few guys they have kept on their 40-man.

Ryan McKenna is now out of options, they have two infielders out of options in Rio Ruiz and Ramon Urias and Jorge Lopez is trash/hurt for 7-8 more months.

Exclamation LAA trades for RP

The Angels have traded for Robert Stephenson
For his MLB career, he has an ERA of 5.36 and a WHIP of 1.53 (in almost 350 innings).

To make room on their roster, they have DFA'd Jose Alvarado.

Coming off a very good 2023 (missed some time at end of season with an anjury) Alvarado is signed for the next two years and a total of $8.4m.

Edit - LAA has DFA'd Stephenson and Giovanny Gallegos, plus the release Julio Urias (who they signed on Dec 24, 2023 for almost $2m!!!)

Unhappy Injured player still on 40-man roster

Even though it says he is on the 60 day IL, Garrett Crochet is still on the 40-man roster.

My experience has been that Waivers are much *better* this year than previous year, but I do think there's probably still more room for improvement.

Thumbs down Griffin Canning

So it is the start of the WS and LAD are out of playoffs... but they decide to recall a RP from minors and DFA Griffin Canning.

He is signed for 3 more years and it cost them Zach McKinstry to get him.

Moves like this always confuse me the most because there is no logic to the decision being made.
Why did they "have to" recall the other player who had already been optioned?
