Amazing game
My Hometown Hounds in PT22 is a fun team limited to players carded in the major cities I have lived in (Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Denver, and Chicago). As a native Pittsburgher, I have always adored Roberto Clemente; he broke out in 1960 when I was in grade school.
I saved and saved PP's with this team, bouncing between Silver and Bronze for the most part, with two brief forays into the Gold level, waiting for a Clemente card to show up. I worked and worked at the FH missions for these franchises, and completed all the FH3's but Colorado (with Arky and Appling, who needs Tulo?). Finally I managed to buy the Great One (as he is known here in the Burgh). He debuted this week in my third try at the gold level. We reached game 162 tied for the division lead, facing the third place team in the division, at home, with a great pitching matchup - Lefty Grove for them, Ed Walsh for us. Walsh pitched well - 8 innings, 8 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 7 K's. But Grove was electric; 7 innings, 1 hit, 1 walk, and 5 K's. Dave Stieb got us out on 5 pitches in the 8th. The 9th inning against Frank Tanana started walk, passed ball, flyout, wild pitch, walk, strikeout, and infield hit plating a run. Sam McDowell (a Pittsburgh native; I have a very good friend who hit a home run off of Sam in High school) came in to face Roberto. Boom! 3-run homer, ballgame, and division title when the team we were tied with lost on the road. Oh, and the winning pitcher was Roy Face, another Pittsburgh guy. |
