Color correction is not my strong suit. Yours turned out really nice. I think mine is a little over saturated.

Lew Krausse Jr.

I can't find any reference referring to him as Paul?

Oh my... I thought it was odd to see the name "Paul" - thinking maybe it was a fan's name instead... I failed to check out the familiar look of Lew's photo... Many thanks for reconfirming it is Lew...

I think this one really stands out. Plus, we have the player I.D. correct. I would say all in all a pretty decent collaboration.

What is going on with Baseball Reference?

In the last year, Baseball Reference has taken it upon themselves to re-name a lot of players in its database. This has made it incredibly difficult to keep track and update the Facepack along with my own independent research. UKbaseballfan has pointed out to me that they changed 1880s Chicago shortstop "Ned Williamson" to "Ed Williamson." Without an explanation, this seems very odd to me and will make it difficult to find him for the casual baseball fan as he has traditionally been referred to as "Ned." Contemporary newspaper articles used both names when writing about him.

"Political Correctness"

They also don't use many of nicknames which many of the old time players were known by. Wouldn't want to offend anyone.

They wrote a sanctimonious blog about their reasoning for that and decided that all of those nicknames were derived from researcher Lee Allen. Obviously that is untrue and newspaper accounts DID use names like Chief and Dummy but that fact has been obscured.

I was wondering about this...sanctimonious is right. And I'll stop there.

Here's picture proof for Ned Williamson, from an 1888 newspaper article.

I think the Ed/Ned Williamson change is less egregious than some, as the names were used pretty interchangeably. I personally have come across Ed more frequently than Ned in the 1880s papers. I understand the reasoning behind the changes, though I don't particularly think it achieves the intended effect. Thankfully, the search function still works correctly with the old names.

Darrell Brown Oakland A's 1982

Darrell Brown was an outfielder from Oklahoma City. Two clubs drafted him in the first round in '75 but he chose not to sign; he was drafted again in 1976, but still declined. Darrell finally became a pro by signing a Tigers contract in '77. He made the big club for a handful of games in the '81 strike year, but was soon passed on to Oakland. Billy Martin brought him up in September of '82 (his three great outfielders kept getting minor hurts that year) and Darrell actually played well in the games he got to play (.813 OPS). Darrell next went to the Twins, who in their pre-Kirby days were still searching for a center fielder. Darrell played about half time in Minnesota in 1983, posting thoroughly mediocre numbers. He was a little better in '84 (.651 OPS) but that was the year Kirby came up. Darrell had a good glove rep but baseball-reference.com doesn't assess him as outstanding in that department. He wasn't fast, he had little power, he didn't get on base a tremendous amount. I can't find anything remarkable in his minor league record. But you have to give the man credit. Darrell Brown may not have been a great player, but he just loved to play baseball. His last major league ABs came in '84, but he continued after that in the minors, the Mexican league, the Chinese league, and two independent leagues until 1996, a full dozen seasons after he last wore a major league uniform. All together, he put in twenty years as a pro player. My hat is off to him. Here he is in a fine color shot from Ebay seller Autographsink. It's the first and so far only I have ever seen of him with Oakland.

I think that may be photoshopped. the A on the hat and the jersey letters look like theyre on separate layers from the photo.

If it has been entirely photoshopped then it is the most brilliant such job I have ever seen. It has certainly been retouched to some extent, but that is common on images offered by Autographsink and some other Ebay sellers. I think this one is genuine because of a strong similarity in lighting and pallet to several other images of the 1982 Oakland A's which have appeared on that seller's page. I attach some examples for comparison.

Maybe thats what it is, because the N on the jersey and the A on the hat has definitly been touched up or entirely from another photo.

Its a nice photo regardless, and a nice find!
