It's been a while since we've seen anything like this in the FL, so I thought we'd drag out the suspense a bit over the next few days.

Entering the final week of the regular season, the NL sits thus, with the other four clubs eliminated:

Tight wins to the Superbas and Cubs (over the Reds), with the Pirates having an off day.

Brooky drops one to the Doves in a slugfest, while the Pirates pick up a win at the Cards.

HOLD THE PHONE!!!

Across in the AL, the A's - who looked home and hosed - have lost two on the trot to leave the door just a little bit ajar for the Sens and Red Sox.

We'll stay focused on the NL for now but keep a close eye on what transpires in the junior circuit.

A Jimmy Jones gem gets the Superbas a narrow win over Boston, the Cubs beat the Reds again to knock them out, and the Bucs keep pace with a cushy victory over the Redbirds.

All of which leaves the race looking like this:

The A's lose again to the BoSox to cut their lead to just one, but with the AL a few games behind, we'll look at it a bit further down the track if needs be.

Just the one game today, with the Cubs seeing off the Pirates, eliminating them in the process. This was the Cubs' final scheduled game.

And then there were two. Brooklyn needs to win 3 from 3 against the Phils to force a tiebreaker.

Well that's a bit disappointing. The Superbas lose a heartbreaker in 15 to the Phillies and the Cubs are home, back to the playoffs for the first time since 1905.

The A's also steady, winning both games of a DH against the Sens to put them 2 clear with 4 to play and leave their MN at 3.

The A's blow a chance to all but end things, allowing Washington to score 2 in the bottom 9th for a walkoff win.

The Sens are still a mathematical chance, but in reality it now all comes down to a 3-game matchup with the Red Sox hosting the A's.

And just like that, the BoSox have hit the lead. The Yanks officially knock out the Sens with two wins.

The Sox win their 8th straight (after losing 9 on the trot in late Sep) to bring home a memorable Pennant, the first in franchise history.

Ross Grimsley jr - acquired from Cleveland in July - writes himself into Boston folklore with a superb 2-hitter to get them home.

Unbelievable.
