Catcher framing
Noice.
Wonder how this will impact the one-pitch mode I use. Guessing it'll just be another stat to rate catchers defensively. Me likey. ![]()

I don't play out games so I love the idea of this being another rating for catchers. It's extremely valuable right now in the game...at least until robo umps

The game basically uses a “one pitch mode” behind the scenes, that is, it figures out results on a per plate appearance basis, not a per count basis. So the answer is, 100%.

I don’t really understand what it means by this “mode”. I get that it could be another rating, but what does it mean by a “mode”?

Well, and beyond that we don't really know what they mean by "model" either. It could be a whole new rating. It could be a new way of extrapolating them - I do feel like basing it off of "ability" which covers things like passed ball rate isn't really great, so maybe the new formula incorporates, for example, leadership rating (since a chunk of what goes into "pitcher framing" is also mound psychology, and I at least like the idea of catcher personality having an effect on pitchers wanting or not wanting to work with them). But, well, the game isn't out yet so who knows?

This is a change that perfect team players will find far more impactful and probably noticeable.

Or it could just mean the catcher will move outside/inside etc as pitcher stars his windup???

I would guess it's going to be much more important than that (for some players).

I would assume that by “model” they mean much more than “cosmetic changes to 3D presentation”.

With MLB going to an automated Strike Zone as soon as next season, with it already in some levels of the MiLB, I am hoping this is a feature we will be able to turn off. There will also need to be a way to set the Strike Zone to 100% accuracy with players unable to argue balls and strikes.

A screenshot of what though? This is just the standard 3D gameplay. Unless that center angle is new, and that will help show off catcher framing? I'm not sure.
Again, this is what happens when they get so vague about things. The "Road to Release" hasn't exactly clarified things either, as the only two left are for Perfect Team, and we still have little idea about what these new features are going to be like. Also, just as a nitpick, the D-Backs haven't used that wordmark in the screenshot in over half a decade, can that please be scrubbed from the scoreboard in modern day MLB games in game? |

Yes, you will be able to adjust the framing impact on a scale. So modern day will play at one level, and historical games where framing was likely less pervasive will play at lower levels. And you can obviously turn it off entirely if you wish your robo umps to never be fooled

Not sure what you mean by that. Catchers have been framing pitches for decades. The day the umpire set up behind the catcher is the day the catcher did his best to receive a borderline pitch in such a way as to get a strike for his pitcher.

Maybe a foolish question but - how is this different from "catcher ability"?

I’m hoping he means that there’s a bigger spread for historical leagues because historically speaking fewer catchers did pitch framing well and up until the study was done in in the early 2010s there was some amount of controversy that it even did anything.
