At least it's not a sweep! That said, Party Boys should likely finish the series in game five.

Also, how was the conference?

The conference went well. I figured out halfway through my presentation that there was just too much content in the 45-minute time limit I had. Still, seeing people who devoted their lives to teaching English learn about a new genre of creative writing was encouraging. I could see some wheels turning in some of their heads.

They were also more intrigued by the baseball aspects than the Fallout game, though one person who used to live in Boston was disappointed to know that Boston never broke the World Series curse in the Fallout world.

Isn't that how it always is? Too much good stuff to cover and not enough time! Glad to hear it went well!

2301 - CBO Sole Survivor Series: Nordhagen Beach vs Atom

NCA #1 Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (79-29) vs SCA #3 Atom Cats (64-44)

Game 5 - Nordhagen Beach 10, Atom 5

Party Boys Win 2301 Sole Survivor Series

It was all about winning for the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys -- and win they did.

There was nothing fancy in how they went about it, players said, they just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball.

"We did the little things right and we did the big things right," said left fielder Michael Fogcrawler, who was named series MVP. "Now we're the league champions."

Nordhagen Beach defeated the Atom Cats by a score of 10-5 at Coolest Field in Town to take the series 4-1.

"Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you make your own luck," said Nordhagen Beach manager Matt Ballhawk Getman. "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played."

Analysis

Not only was Game 5 not the pitchers' duel we expected, it was downright offensive. Each team scored their series high in the game, with the new champions, the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, doubling up the scrappy Atom Cats.

Tommy Beach got the win despite allowing five earned runs on eight hits with six walks and three strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Scruffy Taguchi lost both of his starts in the Sole Survivor Series, giving up six earned runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts in just 4.1 innings pitched. Four relievers finished the game, with Mat Nielsen allowing four more runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout.

The Party Boys started the scoring in the top of the 1st when Maxx Murtagh went deep off Taguchi. The Boys added another run in the 4th after Fogcrawler walked, Brian Masterson singled, and Jon Hitman hit a two-out RBI single for the 2-0 lead.

Atom answered in the bottom of the 4th, taking their first (and only) lead of the game. Jeremy Schoolboy led off with a double, followed by a two-run home run by Kareem Caravan to tie the score, 2-2. Garrett Machine then singled and then advanced to second on a fielder's choice. After Taguchi singled, Earthbound Bussey singled in Machine for the 3-2 lead.

That Cats lead was short-lived, though, once Nordhagen Beach came up in the top of the 5th. Beach got into the pitcher hitting action, leading off with a double. Ryan Combs then singled to put runners at first and third with no one out. Murtagh then hit an RBI groundout to tie the game, 3-3. With one out and two on, the MVP, Fogcrawler, hit a three-run bomb to make it 6-3 and chase Taguchi in favor of Copper Geffre.

The Boys added on to their lead in the top of the 7th. Fogcrawler led off with a single. With one out, Mike Swift walked, and then Jon Hitman hit a two-RBI double to push the lead to 8-3.

Atom put the game back in reach in the bottom of the 7th. After Beach reited the first two batters, he then walked Schoolboy. Caravan then hit his second homer of the game, making the score 8-5.

Despite the Cats' efforts, the Boys made sure there would be no comeback on this day. Combs walked to start the 8th inning and then advanced to third on Murtagh's double. Nielsen intentionally walked Angelou to load the bases, and then Fogcrawler hit an RBI sacrifice fly for the 9-5 lead, chasing Nielsen in favor of Boss Gentleman. Masterson then ended the game's scoring by hitting into an RBI ground out to score Murtagh.

The Cats threatened again in the bottom of the 8th, loading the bases with just one out. However, reliever Tom Mannequin was able to escape after he came in relief for Beach. He got a 1-2 fielder's choice with the bases loaded, and then got Will Ashfire to fly out to end the threat.

While some players had outstanding games--Caravan (2 for 5, 2 HR, 2 R, 4 RBI), Hitman (3 for 5, 2B, 3 RBI), and Murtagh (2 for 5, 2B, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI)--Fogcrawler was named the game MVP to go along with his series MVP. Fogcrawler was 2 for 3 with a home run, a walk, a sac fly, three runs scored, and four RBI. In the series, he finished 9 for 17 (.529) with a double, a home run, three walks, four runs, and eight RBI.

More impressive was that Fogcrawler accomplished a first in CBO playoffs history: the Triple Crown of series MVP. Fogcrawler was the MVP in the Association Semifinals over Fort Hagen, the Association Championship over County Crossing, and the Sole Survivor Series over Atom. In 13 games, he was 24 for 54 (.444) with five doubles, three home runs, six walks, 12 runs, and 19 RBI. He had an OBP of .492 and a SLG of .704 with a 1.1 WAR.

Well done, the Boys! It did look on from the start of the season - but they've been in promising situations before.
And well done to you for another great season and also for spreading the gospel at your recent conference. From the point of view of the educators this genre may be a good way of getting kids who spend all their time playing games into the creative writing field. I'm sure you gave them plenty of food for thought and inspiration.

Thank you for the kind words, and good to see you around!

I don't know if I've ever been the best teacher, but I noticed during that presentation that time flew a lot more quickly than it ever did before while talking. It made me realize just how oversaturated the presentation was. Now I will know better next time that I present to keep it to just 2 or 3 points.

As for your Boys, well, I believe their trip back up the coast has been the merriest of trips so far. I kept rolling dice hoping that one player would fall headfirst off the top of a Corvega or something, but . . . well, no dice.

Somehow, though, I am still betting Talia McGovern has smelled Brendan Kneecapped's current vulnerability. I mean, she once lived in a settlement that tortured and killed innocent synths. She says she doesn't know, but when you ask her about it, she gets hella nervous.

With everything the Boys currently have, they have shown they are aggressive and will make moves to improve their team. There will have to be some moves. Jon Hitman is 33. Dustin Mart has been benched once Ryan Combs moved into 1B from CF. A few pitchers have now hit their 30s: Chet Arthur, Night Demon Archaki, Matt Breakball, Accident John, Matt Ranger, Marc Woodsman, and Tom Mannequin. Julian Shed may not come back from his elbow injury, and he's 34. Regardless of anything else, the Boys will have to think about moves to maintain the future.

Right now, for the team, for the front office, the future matters not. Now it's all booze, chems, and parties. Dopey Meanie may be a fine catcher one day. At the moment, he's puking a salad of vodka, whiskey, Gwinnett stout, and sweet rolls. David Kidd lost a shoe somewhere between Andrew Station and the Harbormaster Hotel. There's probably some nickname waiting for him, but he doesn't care. He knows one nickname you can call him: Champ.

Season Pass League Changes

Season Pass League Announces Changes to Three Leagues

by Evan Guy and Vikky Vail

The Season Pass League is moving away from its shared uniforms for its minor league teams and each team will have a unique presence. Nuka-Cola founder John-Caleb Bradberton and Vim! owner Small Bertha have both acknowledged that they have missed on even more marketing opportunities.

While the Nuka League's NWLB League will not exactly use new uniforms--the newly labeled Amusement Park Baseball League will adopt the former Amusement Park Youth League uniforms. Only the Dry Rock Gulch team will change its nickname, becoming the Convicts (uniforms not currently available). Further exploration of the APBL will come later.

The now former APYL will become the Bradberton Boys League. It will still feature eight teams all with new nicknames except for one, and team names are mostly based on attractions in parks across Nuka-World. The models of the league are below. The eight teams in alphabetical order are: Angry Anaconda Godmodes, Fizztop Mountain Conquerors, King Cola Youths, Mad Mulligan Travelers, Ol' Sugartop Buckaroos, South Bradberton Tycoons, Starport Nuka Hubologists, and the Wixon Shovels.

The VimL Ttiple A will now be called the Mount Desert Island League with 10 new team names. They are also pictured below and named the following: Cliff's Edge Actors, Eagle's Cove Harpooners, Fringe Cove Champions, Glowing Grove Brainiacs, Haddock Cove Engineers, Huntress Island Ug-Qualtoths, Longfellow Pips, Nucleus Radchickens, Oceanarium Oceanics, and Southwest Harbor Rippers.

CBO: Top Prospects

BNN Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

2 October 2301

Top prospects and systems for the offseason

The CBO has announced its annual top prospects list, with a few up-and-coming players appearing close to making their splash in the CBO. The CBO also used a ranking system to name the top systems, with Roxbury appearing at the top as they have in recent years. The Rad Sox organization has 5 of the top 10 prospects, including the #1 overall prospect.

The top 5 prospects are as follows:
1. 3B Donn Mattingley, Roxbury - Mattingley is still trying to find his stroke on offense, but he is already considered to be a gem as a defender on the hot corner. For the second straight season, he has earned a defensive award. Once he finds his bat, he is expected to be one of the top HR hitters in the CBO.
2. SP Whip Lashley, County Crossing - That Lashley is on this list is misleading since he will probably be off it next season after his impressive rookie campaign in the CBO. Lashley was 15-7 with a 4.16 ERA. What is craziest is that he is still developing and could surpass even Beachboy Nut of Nordhagen Beach as the CBO's top pitcher.
3. RF Orcin Cardinal, Finch Farm - Cardinal has already taken the GBRL by storm, pounding out a .293/27/72 line in his first year with Poseidon Energy. While he's never expected to be a great fielder and may eventually move to 1B, he is a great hitter who may see .300+/30+/90+ seasons in the CBO.
4. SP Wilson Beachball, University Point - Like Lashley, Beachball will be off this list soon. Likely to be the CBO's top rookie, going 20-6 with a 3.21 ERA, Beachball has shown a lot of improvement in the last year. Like Lashley, he has not yet reached his full potential.
5. CF Stu Gains, The Slog - Gains has made huge gains (hah!) since being drafted in the 4th round by University Point. Traded to The Slog in July, Gains jumped between the Ghouls' GBRL and BMU teams, but had a solid jump in his performance. Expected to develop all the tools, Gains may find himself as a cleanup-hitting CF in the CBO.

Ye, I broadly categorize these as "AARs" back from when I did writeups of Grand Strategy games like Hearts of Iron/Crusader Kings and the like (though as I said in another thread the other day, I've been mostly playing Stellaris lately). A lot of people understand Fanfiction, but not many make the leap to "game directed" fanfiction, which is basically what this is. For the reader the experience is much the same, I'd say maybe marginally better because you can more easily have fan involvement but that's purely optional, but as a writer, for me personally, "game directed" is way more easy, even if sometimes the game is only very, very minimally involved in the process.

Well, Game 5 at least had plenty of runs. I suppose that's all that can be asked, and it wasn't a sweep as well. Good showing!

Sorry for missing the action on the day of, I bought The Show for the Switch (Blasphamy on multiple levels, I know) and I've been using my free time on that.

Slocum's Joe Reliever Award Goes to Claymore: Freddy Claymore was a calming influence out of the Corvega Flamers bullpen this season.

Redd Named Top Reliever for MA: At the age of 22, Ryan Redd says he still has a lot to learn about life in Boston Minor Union.

But he certainly seems to be a quick study, as the Eastlake Aquaboys reliever was better than all others this year and has captured the 2301 Massachusetts Association Slocum's Joe Reliever Award.

"I hope to win this a few more times before all is said and done in my career," the Buckland, Massachusetts native said.

For the season, Redd had no saves in 26 relief appearances, which totaled 32.2. He fanned 21 betters, while walking 9 and put up a record of 6-0 to go with his 0.83 ERA.

CA Top Manager is Twocaps of Malden: Malden manager Rick Twocaps was selected as the 2301 Commonwealth Association Manager of the Year today.

He was somewhat of a dark horse next to some of the more flashy managers up for the award. Twocaps, who prefers that everyone call him "Cap" or "Skip," tries to shy away from the limelight in a media-driven world.

"It's really unfair to the guys that busted their humps all year long to put all the focus on me now. They showed up early, put in extra time in the cage, worked on their fielding, consulted with our coaching staff and really made 2301 a highlight in my career."

In fairness to this year's Manager of the Year, Twocaps certainly played an important part in the Grognaks success as he guided them to a first place finish in the Commonwealth Association Dark Hollow Pond League and a 45-31 record.

Vetson Garners MA Top Skipper Award: Scott Vetson skippered the Natick Banks Big Leaguers to a very successful year and has been acclaimed as the 2301 Massachusetts Association Manager of the Year.

He kept it short and sweet in the press conference as he accepted the award. "Thanks, but it wasn't just me out there this season."

The Big Leaguers finished the regular season in first place in the Massachusetts Association Glowing Sea League with a 51-25 record.

CA's Best Hurler is Schoolmaster: There's less room in Rickey Schoolmaster's trophy case today after he brought home the 2301 Commonwealth Association Milton General Pitcher Award.

The talented Mystic Pines Raybathers star finished the year 6-3 with a 2.77 ERA. He struck out 74 in 91 innings while walking 38.

He received 16 first place votes out of a possible 24. Dusty Lynne of the Malden Grognaks finished second in voting with 7 first place votes, while Derek Gist of the Greentop Nursery Night People finished third.

Keegan Richardson - Malden Grognaks - 0 - 7
Chad Behr - Nahant Shoremen - 0 - 1

Milton General Pitcher Award Goes to Fusion: The Massachusetts Association announced today that Tim Fusion has been chosen the Milton General Pitcher Award winner for 2301. The Natick Banks hurler had everything working for him as he cruised to an outstanding 6-4 record.

Fusion put up an impressive 3.55 ERA in his award-winning season. He started 19 times, worked 137 innings, yielded 121 hits, walked 20, fanned 122 and held opposing hitters to a .233 average.

He received 20 first place votes out of a possible 24. Whokill Poole of the Forest Grove Pugilists finished second in voting with 4 first place votes, while Bryan Arsonist of the Charles View Cannibals finished third.

Bobby Lidtke - Boston Common Lead Bellies - 0 - 1
Joe Penaltybox - Boston Common Lead Bellies - 0 - 1

Cram Garge Nabs Best Player Trophy: The future looks extremely bright for Cram Garge. At the age of 24, many players are still trying to find their way in Boston Minor Union.

Garge has not only found his way, he's already established himself as one of the game's brightest stars, today being named the winner of the Commonwealth Association Medford Memorial Hitter Award.

"I didn't expect to hit .297 this year, that's for sure," the center fielder said.

The College Square Nerd Ragers star also put up a .409 on-base percentage this year, with 84 hits, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 35 home runs, 80 RBIs and 64 runs scored.

He received 20 first place votes out of a possible 24. Nar Salem of the Malden Grognaks finished second in voting with 4 first place votes, while Hunter Wilde of the Malden Grognaks finished third.

MA's #1 Player for 2301 Named: The manager of the Cabot House Rayguns said he thinks Kern Rifleman is only going to get better as he gets older.

He may only be 23, but it will be hard to top the right fielder's 2301 campaign, as he has been named the winner of the Massachusetts Association Medford Memorial Hitter Award.

His winning campaign featured a .420 batting average and a .494 on-base percentage this year. In 52 games he piled up 84 hits, 8 doubles, 1 triple, 33 home runs, 83 RBIs and 62 runs scored.

He received 16 first place votes out of a possible 24. Bobby Thesea of the Charles View Cannibals finished second in voting with 7 first place votes, while Jeremy Nicholson of the Boston Common Lead Bellies finished third with 1 first place vote.

I would not call playing The Show as blasphemy. I enjoy the game, though it has been several iterations since I last played it.

I know my universe is not as game-directed as some people, but I think that is something about dynasty writing that makes it much different: the planning is thinking about what can be covered, but the game dictates that direction. There are some dynasty reports that could lend themselves to being fully controlled, especially if someone was chronicling a playthrough of a game like Fallout. Depending on the game engine for OOTP, though, means that the writer must definitely be reactionary.

Lynn Woods Pilot Mungo Acclaimed NL Best: Lynn Woods manager Carlos Mungo was selected as the 2301 North League Manager of the Year today.

He was somewhat of a dark horse next to some of the more flashy managers up for the award. Mungo, who prefers that everyone call him "Cap" or "Skip," tries to shy away from the limelight in a media-driven world.

"It's really unfair to the guys that busted their humps all year long to put all the focus on me now. They showed up early, put in extra time in the cage, worked on their fielding, consulted with our coaching staff and really made 2301 a highlight in my career."

In fairness to this year's Manager of the Year, Mungo certainly played an important part in the Bloatflies success as he guided them to a first place finish in the North League Northeast Division and a 53-23 record.

South League Names #1 Manager: The Poseidon Energy Mongrels coaching staff broke out the bubbly when Manager Soini Alapassi was announced as 2301 South League Manager of the Year.

He skippered the Mongrels to a 59-17 record this year and a first place finish in the South League Southeast Division.

To a man, they all agreed that their boss was most deserving of the award. All had glowing words to say about this year's winning manager.

"He just has a way with people. Coaches and players alike love him."

Neilan Wins North League Pitching Crown: In 2301, the premier pitcher in the North League was Trooper Neilan. The Sanctuary Hills starter is this year's recipient of the Young Gun Award.

He went 12-4 in 17 starts with 160 strikeouts in 137.2 innings and an impressive 2.22 ERA.

He received 24 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Lobby Chairleg of the Lynn Woods Bloatflies finished second in voting, while Brahmin Lover Beardman of the Medford Medics finished third.

During the 2301 campaign, Jennings excelled with a 10-2 won-lost mark in 15 starts. In 107.2 innings he yielded 72 hits and 38 walks, while striking out 139 and compiling an impressive 1.92 ERA.

He received 12 first place votes out of a possible 24. Gooseberry Fullwallet of the Big John Salvagers finished second in voting with 6 first place votes, while Randy DeFeo of the Poseidon Energy Mongrels finished third with 5 first place votes.

He may only be 21, but it will be hard to top the left fielder's 2301 campaign, as he has been named the winner of the North League Future Player of the Year Award.

His winning campaign featured a .421 batting average and a .468 on-base percentage this year. In 76 games he piled up 130 hits, 20 doubles, 1 triple, 27 home runs, 69 RBIs and 64 runs scored.

Sorry for missing the action on the day of, I bought The Show for the Switch (Blasphamy on multiple levels, I know) and I've been using my free time on that.
How is it on switch? I've debated getting it, but I wanted to wait a bit in case it was buggy early on.

See, that's the other part of "Blasphamy". I'm a vehement PC gamer. But I've got a Switch now for pokemon as pokemon is doing amazing, and I figure I should make my library worthwhile for the device. The thing is, I absolutely suck at any kind of gameplay using a controller. I'm just plain bad. But that said, so far, any failings of the experience with The Show are purely because of that, me being bad with a controller. The game itself is decent, the UI could be better, but it suffices, and it's a nice change of gameplay I don't feel detracts from also playing OOTP. The controls themselves are responsive and about as good a layout as you could hope for, with a few different choices of how to set it up, again, I'm just bad at gaming with my thumbs. Hell, I keep saying that, but it's been 4 days and by now really the only problem my created character trying to rise through the minors is having is plate discipline, and I can't blame the controls for the fact that I swing at every pitch.

Other than that, the game does seem to have some slowdown at times, I figure because the Switch is less powerful than other systems, but it's not enough to really make me complain, and it's not during gameplay, it's more like during the post-game celebrations in the dugout with the closeups of all the players close in to each other really taxing the GPU.

Just so you all can laugh, I've played 40 games, and I have 1, count 'em 1, walk.

Ha, I also have a switch for Pokemon (as well as Zelda), and with how annoying it is to get a PS5, I've put it off. Just can't justify getting the show on PS4 when I know I'll eventually upgrade. Good to hear though. And with the plate discipline part, you're not alone. Easily the hardest part of the Show, especially if you play online. Part of the reason I do a pitcher for Road to the Show is because when I do a hitter his OBP is always awful compared to the average and that lack of realism kills it for me.

Don't worry, I've been hit by a pitch too, so my on base has a little extra boost

You guys make me want to load up the PS4 (or maybe even the PS3) and play one of my old versions of The Show. That will have to wait until I have a little more time, though!

For now, I am contemplating slowly moving through the offseason of the CBO to load it into OOTP 23. It's been a while since I preordered OOTP, typically waiting for the sales in about the last 3 or 4 versions I bought. However, this time I wanted to jump in based specifically on this:

"Unlimited Alternate Uniforms! At long last, you can create Alternate uniforms for your team – and the options are virtually unlimited! Design hat/jersey/pant combinations to your heart’s content, and designate the uniforms for days of the week and/or even specific dates of the year!" (https://www.operationsports.com/out-...ures-revealed/)

I already had a news story about the Salem Witch Hats having their Sunday Bloody Sunday uniforms. Now, they will actually show up in the graphics! Not only that, but the 2302 season will see some more alternative uniforms.

Also, since I am pressed for time before I complete my plethora of duties through my various coordinator, instructor, and doctoral student duties, once those duties take a little break***, then I can spend some freer time to write a few more creative stories, which I have not been doing much of since last summer. All the creativity is generated through names of players and teams right now. I didn't even give Vikky Vail a chance to tour us through the Vim! League and all the goodness that is Far Harbor. That MUST happen for the 2302 season!

*** - I applied for a job that will change my life for a while from having little free time to having almost no time. That would be that way until I finish my doctorate, so I may have no choice but to slow down even more. Perhaps quality over quantity is better anyway.
