I think pitch framing had been based on catcher ability and it sounds like that is changing. Catcher ability also covers things like passed ball frequency and error rates on balls catchers field.

Since good framing saves runs I imagine a good framer will get a boost to his WAR. Is it safe to assume then that the pitcher will get a decrease in WAR if he pitches to a good framer?

The game uses I believe bWAR, which does not take pitcher framing into account.

I believe BBRef has incorporated framing for some time.
I’m sure catcher framing has been around forever. Until a few years ago, though, it wasn’t quantified and studied. As a result the spread should be much smaller as more coaching staffs teach the fundamentals better. Brad Ausmus, for one example, was considered a catcher good at stealing strikes. So, I’d say historically there would be guys just as good as today’s best framers but in the past these guys would be more outliers. Last edited by whaleheader; 04-15-2022 at 11:03 PM. |

Looks like I was wrong about bWAR not taking pitch framing into account.

interesting... so decisions to have the batter take a pitch and such have no impact

They have an impact inasmuch as you can cheese the game by having batters take until they have two strikes and earn a bunch of extra walks that way…

I think Matt said it was still based on Catcher Ability; however, they were figuring its effects differently.
