When to change season settings?

During what month(s?) can you make changes to league settings so that they take place for the upcoming season?

For example, for the 1983 season - can it only be done from OCT thru DEC 1982 for the following 1983 season? Or can it be done at any point during the 1983 year and have an impact on the 1983 season?

Looking thru the OOTP22 manual and if I'm understanding it correctly all settings can be changed during "preseason" and "spring training".

Or am I misinterpreting that?

Not sure specifically what settings you're referring to, but generally you are safe to change things during the offseason/preseason. I can't speak to changes during spring training (because I don't have spring training in my games), but if the manual says it can be done, then that's probably correct (though I would suggest making changes before then).

The ideal time to change settings like this is during preseason, which generally starts in February and encompasses the time between the season flipping over to the new year and Opening Day. I usually make my changes on day one.

Thank you for the responses. That is very helpful. I'm on date of JAN 3, 1983 with Winter League Meetings coming up JAN 8-11.

After making changes to the settings, when do they show up on the player ratings? Is that something that can be experimented with during Preseason?

For example, under LEAGUE SETTINGS-HISTORICAL if ended 1982 with box checked for "Recalc player ratings based on real stats after each year", could I then uncheck it on JAN 4, 1983, see how the player ratings are impacted, then on JAN 5 recheck that same box and have ratings return to what they were previously?

Should be added: The absolute best time to make changes to your league settings is right after you've made a backup

Everything can be set in pre season, but generally you are not going to see huge changes in ratings.

Player ratings will recalc on their own on Day 1 of the offseason. If it is off on day one, and you recheck it... it will not automatically recalc everyone on day 2 of the offseason. That is not a big deal however as setting the recalc automatically is pretty easy. Check that box for recalc, select the year you want on the Stats and AI tab and it will go ahead and recalc.

I usually go through all the settings on day one of preseason when trying to do something similar to Strat-O-Matic. This allows me to use the first generation of preseason predictions day one of Spring Training to see if I want to tweak anything. I'll tweak, run to Opening day, check the second set of preseason tweaking and make additional tweaks if necessary.
