OOTP: A Player Dynasty

This is not your typical dynasty report. Most dynasties revolve around a specific team. Here, we will watch the baseball journeys of four high school freshman in the United States High School Series Circuit. The USA HSS is comprised of two high school leagues, one league concentrates itself in the eastern portion of the United States, while the other league concentrates itself in the western portion of the United States. Both leagues are comprised of six divisions of six teams each. There are a total of 72 high schools around the USA that act as a feeder league to MLB, the (fictional) NCAA, and the (fictional) NCAA Junior College circuit.

Our first look at these players will be from May 1st, 2022. There is one game left in the high school regular season. In each high school league, 16 of the 36 teams will make the playoffs: the top two teams in each division, plus two wildcards. Each round of the playoffs is a best-of-five series. The division winners will occupy the top three seeds.

Our first player we will look at is right-handed RF Danny Edwards. He is a freshman at the Jacksonville HS Prairie Thunder. His plus-plus contact should allow him to maintain a high batting average. Not only can he draw a lot of walks, but he also has a little bit of pop in his game. He also projects to be able to play at multiple positions, being used all around the outfield and even at shortstop this season. His 16-23 Prairie Thunder are currently out of the playoffs, but his .423/.556/.750/1.306 slash (151 OPS+) shows that he can be a force to be reckoned with in his later high school years.

The next player we will see is lefty starting pitcher Jordan Maciel from Celina, OH. He currently plays for the Manhattan HS South Raccoons. A team that gives him a lot of run support, his weak pitches are masked by his team's great offense and his excellent stamina and hold runners. In 10 games (9 starts), he has amassed 3.50 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 48 K in 43.2 IP. His Raccoons are another team that is out of the playoff race, so he’ll look to continue his good performances heading into the 2023 season.

The third player in our dynasty report is another left-handed pitcher by the name of Jose Patino. The Louisianan native employs his trade at the Oklahoma City HS Stampede in the USA HSSE. With decent stamina and the ability to hold runners, we can only hope that that will thrust him into the big leagues one day. With no outstanding pitches of note, we may be seeing him in Indy ball or around the globe somewhere.

The final player we will look at is outfielder Moses Brown of Minneapolis, Minnesota. A player who projects to be a good defensive outfielder with a bit of speed, he would really need the bat to play out to have any significant career in the bigs. His South Los Angeles HS Sprit are one of the two teams that we will follow in the 2022 High School playoff season (Jose Patino’s OKC HS Stampede being the other).

About this world:
This save game as all leagues loaded with the exception of the World Baseball Classic. I created my own WBC that has 4 groups of 8 and is played bi-annually on even years. The group stage has 28 games (play each team in the group 4 times) over a period of 36 days. The top three in each group make the knockout stage with the group winners receiving a bye into the quarterfinals. Each round is a best of five series.

There is also the USA feeder league system that feeds into MLB. There is one collegiate league with 40 teams, the NCAA. This league is separated into 2 subleagues with 4 divisions of five each. There are no wildcards here, just the top two in each division make the playoffs. There is a junior college league (NCAA JC) with two divisions of 6. Only the division winners here make the postseason and again it is a best of five series. Then we have our two high school leagues, with 36 teams each, and our four players will we be following throughout the course of this series.
I have never written a dynasty before so this is a journey that both you and I can go on together. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I enjoy writing it!

2022 USA HSS Playoffs Wildcard Round

Two of our four players' teams made the 2022 USA HSS Playoffs!

Jose Patino’s Oklahoma City HS Stampede finished second in their division with a record of 23-17. The team finished 4th in defensive efficiency, 4th in home runs, 5th in ERA, and 11th in K’s. Patino himself had a very productive year as the Stampede #1 starter. The young freshman posted a 4-1 record with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP (10 G, 7 GS). He struck out 11.5 batters per 9 innings and managed an ERA+ of 263. He will line up against Louisville HS starter Israel de Leon (0-2, 7.46 ERA).

Moses Brown’s South Los Angeles HS Spirit won the inaugural Western Conference Californian Division, edging out rivals North Los Angeles by a single game! Brown started 38 of his team's 40 games this season and lead the Western Conference in WAR (2.1). He hit 18 HR and had 63 RBI this season. His slash was really good at .401/.522/.821/1.343! Good for an OPS+ of 158. His Spirit will face off against division rivals San Diego HS Sky Chiefs in the first round.

May 5th, 2022
Brown goes 2-4 with 2 BB, 2 B, 3 R in a 13-10 loss

May 6th, 2022
Brown’s solo shot in the 6th help elevate the Spirit past the Sky Chief, ties the series at 1, and gets his first postseason cycle. Brown went 3-4 in Game 2 of the series against the Sky Chiefs. He managed to get on base three more times as he hit for the cycle and was named player of the game!

Patino goes 4.0 innings in an ND against Louisville, Stampede wins Game 1. Patino was roughed up in the first game of the postseason, allowing two runs in the bottom of the first. He never truly was able to settle down as he allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in the four innings he pitched. He walked two and struck out three. He next appears to line up for game five if necessary.

May 7th, 2022
Patino’s Oklahoma City HS take a 2-0 series lead against Louisville after defeating the Ports 9-8

May 8th, 2022
Brown part of quartet of SLA players who homer in Game 3. Moses Brown was one of the four players who hit home runs today in a pivotal game three. Batting from the 3-spot, Brown went 3-6 today in South Los Angeles’s 14-3 rout of the San Diego HS Sky Chiefs. His OPS has climbed up to 2.041 for the three games so far.

May 9th, 2022
Brown quiet as San Diego HS take down South Los Angeles, tie series at 2. Brown was quiet today as the San Diego HS Sky Chiefs took down the South Los Angeles Spirit, 6-2, and evened up the series. Brown went 1-5 with a double as the freshman was unable to get going today, something we are accustomed to seeing lately. Now he’ll need to be on top of his game if his Spirit are to get past San Diego in Game 5 in two days' time.

Louisville HS cut the lead in half as they beat Oklahoma City 11-7 in Game 3.

May 10th, 2022
Oklahoma City prevails as Patino can enter Game 1 on full rest. The Stampede trounced over the Louisville HS Ports 3-1 in the Wildcard Series. The Stampede won Game 4 by the score of 5-2. Outfielder Josh brown was named the series MVP. The Stampede will face the Houston HS Calvary in the Division Series next time out.

It took five games, but the spirit of Los Angeles pays off. The South Los Angeles HS Spirit managed a series win over division rivals San Diego HS Sky Chiefs today. The Spirit won the all-important Game 5 by the score of 16-7. Moses Brown went 2-4 with 2 R today in the victory. He was also named the series MVP, going 11-23 with 2 HR, 7 RBI, and a .478/.586/1.000 line. The South Los Angeles HS Spirit will face the Eugene HS Black Sox in the Division Series next time out.

2022 USA HSS Division Series

Our two high school players won both of their first-round matchups! They are onto the Division Series now. Jose Patino and his Oklahoma City HS Stampede will face off against the Houston HS Calvary. The Calvary are division rivals of the Stampede, both a part of the Mountain West Conference’s Central Division. The Calvary won the division and finished with a record of 29-11. Their defense was stellar this season, leading USA HSSE in ERA (6.12) and finishing third in defensive efficiency. Their offense was potent as well, leading the league in home runs (107) and finishing 6th in batting average
.
Moses Brown’s South Los Angeles HS Spirit will face off against the Eugene HS Black Sox. The Black Sox won their Western Conference Pacific Division, with a record of 24-16. Pitching was the name of the game for the Black Sox, finishing in the top third in ERA, Ks, and defensive efficiency. Their hitting was not great at all, finishing in the bottom third in runs, home runs, and batting average

May 13th, 2022
Patino strong in Game 1, but not strong enough. The Houston HS Calvary took Game 1 of the Division Series against the Oklahoma City HS Stampede by the score of 6-0. Patino was strong in this outing, giving up two runs on five hits in five innings pitched, while striking out 5. It was OKC’s Isaiah Selden who gave up the other four runs while recording just two outs to give Houston the victory. Patino will line up for Game 5 if necessary.

Moses Brown had a very productive day for the South Los Angeles HS Spirit today. He went 2-4 with 2 walks, 2 runs scored, and an RBI in South Los Angeles's 12-4 victory in Game 1. Brown, batting from the two spot, maintains a .487 batting average going into Game 2

May 14th, 2022
Oklahoma City HS Stampede stomps Houston HS. The Stampede put Game 1 behind them quickly as the bats exploded in Game 2. The Stampede won 19-2, sending a massive 44 batters to the plate today. Game 3 is in two days’ time.

Brown 100% in the box today. Brown and his South Los Angeles HS Spirit took Game 2 to the Black Sox today, winning by the score of 11-4. Brown on the day went 3-3 with a walk and a solo home run. He scored three times today. His solo shot came in the 8th inning. It was his third home run of the playoffs and first of the series.

May 16th, 2022
OKC walk it off in the 9th! Oklahoma City HS Stampede was up 4-2 going into the ninth. That all changed when Houston HS Calvary hit a 2 run shot and score an additional run to go up 5-4. However, freshman Josh Brown sent the crowd home happy by hitting a 1-out, 2-run homerun to win the game and give Oklahoma City a 2-1 series lead.

Moses Brown quiet in Game 3, South Los Angeles defeated. Moses Brown was not his usual self today, struggling to get into a rhythm for Game 3. The outfielder went 1-2 with a strikeout, and was pinched hit for in the 6th inning.

Both of our series are heading to Game 4 with our players’ teams up 2-1

May 17th, 2022
Game 4 a game for the ages as Houston prevail, force Game 5. In a game that was a tail of two halves, the Houston HS Calvary jumped to a 9-5 lead after five and a half innings today. During the second half of the game Oklahoma City were able to claw their back into the game, making it 10-9 after seven innings. Each team scored a run in the eighth to make it an 11-10 OKC game going into the ninth. Houston was able to score two runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead 12-11 and Oklahoma City failed to score in the bottom of the ninth. This game had 92 plate appearances, with 27 hits and 23 runs scored. Jose Patino is set to start Game 5.

So close, yet so far away. The South Los Angeles HS Spirit scored in the top of the first today, and that would prove to be their only run in an extremely tight affair. They held that lead all the way to the bottom of the ninth until SLA pitcher Dan Narvaez walked three and gave up two earned runs to lose the game for the Spirit. Brown was his usual self, minus the run production. He went 2-3 with an additional walk in the loss.
Both of our players are now forced to play a Game 5 decider!

May 19th, 2022
Josh Brown, Jose Patino strong as Oklahoma City defeat Houston, 7-1, win Division Series. Jose Patino was locked-in today, pitching five innings of one-run ball. He gave up three hits and a walk while striking out seven in the no-decision. The Stampede exploded in the top of the eighth with five runs to put the game to bed. Josh Brown was the series MVP, his second series MVP title so far. They will now face the Green Bay HS Rawhide in the Mountain West Conference League Championship Series!

Oklahoma City HS Stampede 3-2 Houston HS Calvary

Brown being Brown as South Los Angeles move on. The South Los Angeles HS Spirit beat the Eugene HS Black Sox in Game 5 today, 12-5. South Los Angeles put up a six-spot in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Moses Brown went 2-5 with a solo home run, 2 runs, and 2 RBI today. He was given the honor of series MVP, his second of the playoffs. He went 8 for 18 with 3 HR and 6 RBI. He slashed .444/.524/1.000. The Stampede will face the Phoenix HS Wings in the Western Conference Championship Series!

2022 USA HSS League Championship Series

Our players’ teams are still alive! It’s time to check out how the League Championship Series ended up!

Jose Patino and the Oklahoma City HS Stampede will face off against the Green Bay HS Rawhide. The Rawhide finished with a record of 26-14. They won their Mountain West Conference Appalachian Division. They finished in the top third of runs, home runs, batting average, ERA, strikeouts, and defensive efficiency. Game 1 takes place on May 21st, 2022. Jose Patino is set to start Game 4 if necessary, on May 25th.

Moses Brown and the South Los Angeles HS Spirit will face off against the Phoenix HS Wings. The Wings finished the year with a 24-16 record, good for second in the Western Conference Southwestern Division. Their offense is what propelled them this far, having a top ten offense this season. Their pitching hasn’t been as good, finishing in the bottom half of strikeouts and defensive efficiency. Game 1 also takes place on May 21st. 2022.

May 21st, 2022
Green Bay topple Oklahoma City, win Game 1. The Rawhide won Game 1 of the series off the back of a nine-run second inning and a five-run third inning. Green Bay won the game 20-12. Despite Oklahoma having 24 hits, five errors on the day made it difficult for the Stampede to really get their defense going,

Brown scores two in SLA win. Moses Brown went 2-3 with a triple, two walks, and two runs scored in South Los Angeles’s victory over the Phoenix HS Wings. The Spirit won the game today 4-0.

May 22nd, 2022
Oklahoma City score late, win comfortably in Game 2. The Stampede managed a 10-2 victory over Green Bay in Game 2. Oklahoma City scored four runs in each of the eighth and ninth to secure the Game 2 victory.

Spirit drop a close one, series tied at 1. South Los Angeles lost Game 2 today, 12-10, and evened up the series at 1. Moses Brown went hitless for the first time of the 2022 playoffs, going 0-3 with 3 walks. His average has now dipped below .500 for the first time in six games during these playoffs.

May 24th, 2022
Oklahoma City rally late, take Game 3. The Oklahoma City HS Stampede managed to turn around a poor first half of the game today, scoring six unanswered runs en route to a 7-5 victory today. Jose Patino was moved up in the rotation to start today's game. The young pitcher only pitched two outs, giving up three runs. Luckily, all of the runs were unearned. He sports a 3.07 ERA and 1.16 WHIP (4 G, 4 GS, 14,2 IP) so far in the 2022 postseason.

Brown strong, but not strong enough. Moses Brown was back to his hitting ways for Game 3, going 3-5 with 3 RBI. Unfortunately, the Spirit ended up losing Game 3, 8-6. A big factor in this game was the fact that the top of the Spirit order was unable to score any runs today.

May 25th, 2022
Oklahoma City lose, Game 5 looms once again. Green Bay took Game 4 by the score of 15-8 today. Green Bay scored early and often, never letting the Oklahoma City pitchers settle down into a rhythm. Not only did Green Bay score 7 runs in the first four innings, but they also scored five in the top of the ninth to put the game to bed.

South Los Angeles win, force Game 5. South LA scored eight runs in the 3rd en route to an 11-8 victory over Phoenix. The Wings held Moses Brown hitless for the second time of the series. Brown went 0-5 with 2 K. So far Phoenix has held Brown to a .250/.429/.438 slash line.

May 27th, 2022
Oklahoma City in agony as they fall late on. The Stampede were cheering all around in the early goings of Game 5 today. They jumped out to a 4-1 lead after 3 innings. All of that smooth sailing was struck by a hurricane as the Green Bay HS Rawhide stormed back for a 6-run sixth inning. Oklahoma City eventually drowned in an 8-6 defeat. Jose Patino finishes the 2022 USA High School Series East Playoffs with an 0-1 record, a 3.07 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 15 K in 14.2 IP. He played in four games and started all four games. He had a 9.2 K/9 and a 322 ERA+

South Los Angeles’s Brown nowhere to be found. Brown cooled off once and for all in the League Championship Series against the Phoenix HS Wings. Brown went 1-3 with a walk in the 7-3 loss to Phoenix. Moses Brown finishes the 2022 USA High School Series West Playoffs with a line of .433/.564/.817. He had 4 HR and 14 RBI in 15 GS. He was named series MVP in both the Wildcard Round and the Division Round.

2022 Player Review

With the 2022 season behind us and awards handed out, let us take a look at how the four players did this season.

Jordan Maciel (LHP – Manhattan HS South)
Jordan Maciel had a very productive season for the Manhattan HS South Racoons in 2022. The lefty played in 11 games this season while starting 10 of them. Jordan won three games this year, going 3-0 with an ERA and WHIP of 3.44 and 1.27, respectively. He stuck out 58 in 49.2 innings, good for a 10.5 K/9. Twice this season he struck out 10 batters in a game. The first one came on April 26th against North Boston. He did it again the next time through the rotation, this time against South Boston on May 1st, 2022. He finished the season with a 286 ERA+ and a 2.3 WAR. For his efforts this year, he finished 3rd in USA High School Series East Pitcher of the Year Voting. He’ll look to bring that rich vein of form to the start of the 2023 season.

Jose Patino (LHP – Oklahoma City HS)
Jose Patino thrived under the pressures of being a top-end ace at a young age. The #1 starter for the Stampede finished the regular season with a very respectable line of 4-1 with a 3.76 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. He struck out 49 batters and walked 15 in 38 innings. Good for an 11.5 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9. He had an ERA+ of 263 during the regular season. His Stampede managed to make it to the USA HSSE Mountain West Conference Championship Series as well. In the four games that Patino pitched in the playoffs, he went 0-1 with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. He struck out 15 batters in 14.2 IP. This was good for an ERA+ of 322 and a 0.7 WAR. No personal accolades for Patino this year, but the lefty will look to retain his status as team ace going into 2023.

Moses Brown (CF – South Los Angeles HS)
Without a doubt, Brown was one of the premier hitters of the 2022 USA HSSW. He played in all 40 regular-season games in 2022 and hit 18 HR with 63 RBI and 67 R. He slashed .401/.522/.821 during the regular season, good for 158 OPS+ and 2.1 WAR. He had 32 walks to his 27 strikeouts. His Spirit also made it to the USA HSSW Western Conference Championship Series. Throughout the playoffs, Brown hit .433/.564/.817 with 4 HR and 14 RBI. He also had more walks than strikeouts in the playoffs (17 BB – 11 K). His efforts in the playoffs were good for a 166 OPS+ and 0.8 WAR. He was named series MVP in both the Wildcard Series and Division Series. For all of his efforts this season he finished 2nd in MVP voting and won a Silver Slugger at CF. He was also selected as an All-Star, so hopefully the trend can continue going forward.

Danny Edwards (RF – Jacksonville HS)
A great player on a poor team, Danny Edwards’ Jacksonville HS missed out on the postseason in 2022. None of it was Edwards’ fault, however. The right fielder played in 35 games before being injured with a fractured foot. He missed two weeks but by then Jacksonville was already out of playoff contention. In his 35 games, Edwards slashed .432/.556/.750 with 12 HR and 46 RBI. This was good for a 151 OPS+ and a 1.6 WAR. He’ll have to do much better in his sophomore season as he wasn’t even considered in MVP voting.
